I’m not a KI expert, but given the aliens like the cold (probably like the aliens from Crysis 1), I’d take Glacius as more of a nickname/slur from the earthlings.
Kinda like how the Humans in Halo have their own names for all the covenant aliens.
Some of you are insane if you think the SNES version of “ULTRA ULTRA ULTRA” sounds better than the KI1 and KI2 arcade versions where he yells out “ULTRA COMBO” stretched out. It sounds WWAAYY better. I think the way it sounds in KI1 and KI2 is better than the new KI though. I don’t like how muddled the voice sounds in general.
I also hope they change how he says “KING COMBO” so that the “I” is stretched out and his tone gets higher as he says it. I think that is probably my favorite combo announcement in KI1.
Is it just me, or does Glacius’s ultra really suck? I remember from KI 1, all of the ultras were pretty creative and fast. Then from KI 2, the ultras were really disappointing, because if you remember correctly, they were just the same motion over and over. Jago would just do roundhouse kicks, Kim Wu would just keep doing rolls on you, and etc… To me, Glacius’s ultra from KI 1 was great, especially when he would morph his arm into an ice pick and just keep stabbing you then finish it with the puddle uppercut. In this one, it just seems extremely slow and doesn’t seem to have much rhythm.
Ultras in KI1 are the same thing, basically 2-3 moves repeated over and over. Glacius ultra would just like do 12 or so punches to the face, then do the ice pick move like over and over and finally uppercut you. He may have done 1 more move somewhere in the middle. Jago’s had a LITTLE more variety, but he did the laser sword move a ton early on.
My main was TJ Combo and like the first 1/2 of his ultra is him just doing the jab punch that looks like he’s hitting a punching bag. Then he starts doing some moves that I think are just auto-double animations until he does the first uppercut then he winds for the 2nd uppercut.
I don’t think it sucks, it’s just gonna take some getting use to, like the character re-design and him being a Zoner now. Honestly when I heard he would be keepaway, I pretty much pictured his Ultra Combo looking like that, only with more projectiles. But the ice shards shooting up out of the ground on his command (accompanied by the first Xylophone theme ever heard in a fighting game) does give it a unique feel. At least to me…
I wouldn’t blame anyone for not liking the ultras in this game, it’s old school in style and the hitstop per hit makes it look janky. Nowadays we get flashy ultras in SF4 and Crispy level 3s in Marvel.
I like the fact that its not detached from the gameplay.
As in, when you land a super/Ultra in alot of modern games. The game stops, and then a cutscene plays. Yes it looks cool, but it takes you out of the fight.
This way is alot more reminiscent of the supers in old 2D games, which I actually prefer to the cinematic supers for the reason listed above.
Except landing the Ultra is essentially the end of the fight anyway in KI so what would it matter? Obviously I don’t mind the current Ultras but “taking you out of the fight” is irrelevant when the fight’s already over.
And the Shadow Moves in this game aren’t Supers really, they’re more like EX moves in spirit.
I like the new ultra. It stays pretty different throughout and doesn’t ram the same normal for 3 years. The big ice glacier at the end with the music is pretty cool and the instinct cancels pretty much makes it like one huge ultra combo.
I’m not opposed to the re-design of the character. I have no problem with them creating brand new looks for the characters, Glacius actually looks pretty nice. Only thing I don’t like is how they kind of changed the animation for the puddle punch. In KI 1 and 2 it looked a lot more fluid and smooth, and he kind of turned to face the screen when he did it. In this one, it just looks like a regular uppercut. Other than that, I have no problem w/ the character.
