I think the way it works is every year is a season. So season 1 (aka Killer Instinct: Round One) is eight characters. You pay $20 and you get 8 characters. Next year Round Two comes along with another 8 or more characters and when you buy them, they stack. Kind of like RockBand. So if we go through 3 years we have a large cast of characters at the price of a retail game.
But… I can’t rule out them adding any more characters.
And FYI its 6 at launch, 8 in Feb-March when the story mode is added.
It’s not ideal but its definitely workable.
Difference between $20 and $40 version outside of KI arcade is simply character customization.
Ultra for me all the way. As long as payment isn’t necessary for anyone else then I think that’s what everyone wants. I think everyone wants that so far.
And TJ Combo would be one of the ones that wouldn’t make it at launch since Fulgore and Cinder are in top demand. Sure Thunder is in but simply because he didn’t get the attention he deserved from the first game and was the least popular character.
Sadly I probably won’t get my hands on this game for another year or two. Alas is the pain of money and crisis.
I just want whatever the price is to get locked in for all of the future DLC for one price. Buying the virtual version of the 60 dollar disc essntially.
If they don’t have an option for a locked in one price for all future content, Ill be playing Marvel and Skullgirls more often that’s for sure. Ill wait till I hear something from Ken Lobb since his original words were “you can get the whole game, additional characters will come later”. Anything else starts to put thisin a pseudo free to play thing that I’m not interested in.
There is absolutely no point in rushing this game. So far it looks great, so the purpose to trying to get it out there ASAP when the game clearly is not finished just doesn’t make any sense. I’ve read some people make the point that other games have 20+ rosters but only about half of the roster ever gets used, but still, thats irrelevant. When a game is first released, everybody has an opportunity to play the characters that they like, and about after a few months, it will be determined where they are in the tier list. This game won’t give us the opportunity to do that. The way they’re doing it, they can only make up for it by making sure that all of the characters that they add from here on out will be completely viable. It would be totally pointless to release new characters in “seasons” if they can easily be seen to be low tier compared to the already existing characters.
I’m not one hundred percent on the whole pay for the Ultra edition and get everything free for that. It seems like they’re planning on working on this game for a number of years if they plan on releasing content in “seasons”. If so, there is no way they could only be making 40 bucks at most off a purchase. They will definitely have to charge us for the new content when its released some how. It just seems like such a strange way of doing things IMO. Can you imagine this being played @ EVO next year with only an 8+ roster?
Oh ok, so its essentially the collector’s version for the first round.
Wake me back up when you find out the price for the locked in full game/all future character content. I just want the option where you pay, sit back and have the futue DLC just auto upload to the system.
I don’t think they’ll be a locked in full game/all future character content until all of the characters are out and even then there still might not be one.
It’s a actually a smart idea and a decent pricing model because they know you’ll going to download that demo and use Jago online on dat GGPO and have a blast, and you’ll be feenin’ to buy at least an additional character to use, the Combo Breaker edition, or the Ultra edition.
If you think about it they can’t really do that. They plan on continuing to work on this game for it seems like years to come and releasing content in different seasons. There is no way they could do a Buy This Now, Get the Rest Later thing. They will have to charge us something for the upcoming content. It’s really just a strange way of doing it.
Too bad we don’t have direct gameplay, as in, gameplay where you only see and hear the game itself w/o all of the outside noise. I really want to hear Chief Thunder’s theme in this game.
Thanks for the clarification. It’s cool how they show the stats for every move and so on. They are really trying but release is still the confusion as of now.
@DevilJin 01 Yeah it doesn’t make any sense. The game looks like it has tons of potential, I see no point in all in trying to ruin it by rushing the game. It’s got solid fundamentals right now and you could only hope that they continue to build on it. When Ed Boon and NRS remade MK 9 into a legit tournament worthy fighter, they definitely took their time, and made sure the game had a REAL roster. Thats really the one thing you hope for when you see a classic game being remade. You expect to see all of the characters that you used in the past game to be in the new one, it just goes with the territory. I’m not going to say that we won’t see the original 13 from the first 2 games in this one eventually, but the way they’re doing it just doesn’t make much sense at all. I still plan on getting the game however, I guess mainly just because of the nostalgia. Other than that, I had high hopes of seeing this game @ EVO 2014, but it seems like around the time that happens, it will only have 8 characters total. There is no way in hell a main game @ EVO can have only 8 characters on its roster. Hell, didn’t Skullgirls release with even more characters than that?
Actually, there won’t be a “full version” until DH just completely stops making stuff for the game. Just for the sake of the franchise, I HOPE it turns out good enough for them to go ahead and make KI 4. They’ve basically said they will continue to release content for the game in different seasons, so there will always be new stuff coming out.
