I know story is important in anime fighters but in general it really isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things. I think considering that you can buy the game for $20 with all the characters and it’s going to have (hopefully) gdlk netcode, really in depth training mode (maybe online training in the future?), pretty diverse characters, and a survival mode I think that’s all you need. And survival mode is fun. Garou had the best survival mode of any fighter.
I feel the same way at the moment.
Though, its not like we ever get shown online mode before launch with any other game. M$ servers and Rollback make me feel good about netcode.
Its the questions about Lobbies and Spectator mode that worry me the most.
If the game is basically sf4 online mode but for KI, I’ll be happy (as far as interface/lobby goes). If we can’t spectate while in a lobby (like how MVC3 was at launch) it’s going to be extremely disappointing. But this team seems to know what they are doing and what is important to actual fighter fans, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I’m just a little concerned that they haven’t talked about online at all really. Like we knew MVC3 was going to suck with no spectator mode even though they had lobbies.
No spectator mode (unconfirmed) would suck. But I think it was the bad netcode that killed MvC3 online more than anything.
I think they already confirmed that there isn’t spectator mode. They stated that they achieve it through twitch. That does suck but i’m not gonna care as long as I do something else while I’m waiting for my turn (like play practice mode).
But do they mean you can’t just sit in a lobby and watch, without playing? Or do they mean that while waiting in line, you can’t watch the other people play?
Cause AE has the spectator mode where you don’t even have to play you can just watch and host a match. Or SFxT does, one of them I think!
Like I said, the way they answered that question… didn’t make me think they understood what was being asked.
Yeah twitchtv isn’t an alternative to spectator mode because it’s only going to record footage of you winning. If you lose there’s no way for your spectators on twitch to watch the other people in the lobby playing. Unless everyone in the room opens up streams and the person watching keeps a window open for every stream. Basically, the logistics of it are retarded. When people do stream on day one, they’re not going to be in lobbies of more than 4 people, no one is going to want to sit around…let alone WATCH you sit around.
I don’t think it’s a huge deal for this game to not have spectator mode. It’s a seasonal based fighting game and it’s not like Vanilla Marvel 3 where people are expected to plop down 60 bucks for a “full game” and it has no spectator mode and terrible netcode. I’m fine with paying for something that will become full over time if it has something that we should be given with EVERY game EVERY time like good netcode. They can always build up on the features and then finally for once we get a good fighting game with good netcode and spectator. That shouldn’t be a complicated issue in 2013, but for some stupid reason it is.
Now if they just don’t have lobbies period…then yeah that’s a disaster even for this game. I’m guessing it’s not that bad though. You need lobbies AND spectator mode for a 24/7 style streams to start existing. Which are great for the community since they’re effectively like being at an online arcade that the world can watch at any time.
Also, Keep in mind, for most games (and several FG’s) specator mode means “watching and not playing”. The way the question was answered makes me think that’s what they were talking about, and not what we call spectator mode.
I always refer to spectator mode as the watch mode or idle mode. Never heard it used any differently.
They’re probably talking about a spectator option through twitchtv which is basically the same as a recording function. That doesn’t allow you to spectate matches in the lobby on your own though.
My only concern with spectator mode, is that you are adding people to a server/host, which could potentially cause more lag. I don’t know if that fear is completely irrational, since the server/host isn’t downloading and uploading data from the spectators, but it spectators do cause lag, that could be a valid concern.
I loved spectating in SC4, even though the game was awful. I like games where it rotates in a fashion where people play the winner too.
If they don’t have spectator mode at launch. That better be high up on the to-do list, and not a season 2 thing.
Trust me, the Double Helix forums are going to remind them ALL DAY LONG. Like EVERY DAY long.
More like every hour on the day. Spectator Mode is standard now in Fighting Games. I still remember the blowback when Vanilla Marvel 3 launched without one. It’ll be there.

Free to play, 20 for the whole game? Can’t beat that. Plus, it’s Killer Instinct.
The thing I hate about max’s video’s are how he act’s like he’s surprised at everything… It’s so fake, and it was really bad in this video. But hey its new footage.
It makes me think he just play’s dumb for ALOT of things he has insider info for… I’m not mad at that, but come on man don’t “insult my intelligence” by acting like you didn’t know what moves were in the game when you clearly watched and broke down every video like the rest of the KI fan’s if not more so.
Ok, going to reserve my xbone. Which version of KI do I get if all I want is the full game? And who has the best deal? I don’t care about any extras.

Welcome to Youtube. The place for Fake/Over the top reactions. The majority of viewers fall for it and like to watch it… heck, PewDiePie is a prime example =p
A lot of Max’s “surprised at everything” demeanor is meant as either tact, or a rhetorical, leading question. For example, “Does she still have her Flick Flack?” Of course, he already knows she does, but this is his conversational style meant to lead Filthie into walking through that answer door, so he knows exactly what Max is asking. When I worked as a customer service agent, this is one of the key methods we were taught to manipulate the conversation flow; otherwise the other person might just start talking about who knows what and your call time would just keep on going. So you ask a leading question, using the info that you DO know to lead the person towards the meat of the issue.
The other part of it is tact. For example, if Filthie was to say “she can then combo into her cat as a projectile”, Max could say “oh, cool!” as a non-committal way of letting Filthie know that he’s listening and engaged, or he could say “yeah, we already knew that” and come off as condescending. He’s not trying to be “fake”, but rather respectful and in control of the flow toward the information he wants to get his viewers, so the conversation is 12 minutes instead of 40. (not that I wouldn’t mind watching 40 more minutes of KI!
That’s all that’s going on here…nothing devious or sinister.
I figured his stuff was just pre recorded from a long time ago, but it makes sense if he’s just making an act out of it. I don’t really listen to the commentary much during videos any way. I just kinda blur it out like I’m watching a Japanese match.
@Caliagent, here’s the chart. Everything you need as far as gameplay is concerned (characters) is in the combo breaker pack. If you get the Ultra combo version you get to beta test the last 2 characters before they release, but that’s up to you whether that’s necessary.
Also, if you haven’t changed your XBL account or still have the old one from the CVS2 days, you might want to check your email. Microsoft is giving out the combo breaker package for free to some customers in an email. So you might already have the game for free.

Nice breakdown, Jin! It’s nice seeing it all charted out.
