There aren’t too many games that let you do by definition turtling any ways. Any game like Killer Instinct that is fast paced, keeps you to the ground and has overhead/low/throw mix ups is not going to allow long term turtling. Turtling was already out of the window with how fast the game moves and how quick the mix ups are. Marvel 3 allows you to do runaway with characters like Spider Man and MODOK where you can just camp at the top of the screen for most of the match if you want. The problem is the mix ups and movement are too strong for traditional turtling.
The only thing they’ve really done that I’ve seen is make it so that blocked fireballs give the opponent a lot of meter and they have put in moves that go through projectiles. Which SFIV also has a ton of special moves and ultras that can sail you through projectiles, yet you can still turtle in that game. Which even then there are still characters like El Fuerte and Seth that basically counter pick turtling play style and you can just go to them if you don’t want the opponent to turtle anymore.
Turtling won’t be able to exist in a game with mix ups that can happen as quickly as they will in this game though because Sabrewulf as a character will make turtling unviable unless he has no moves that go through projectiles. Even if he didn’t have any moves that went through projectiles, he has 3S Ibuki style dash that moves behind you for left/right mix ups, overheads, lows and throws. Even if you were to keep him out for a bit, once he gets in you’re not going to be able to reaction block more than a couple things and maybe tech one throw before you are opened up.
I believe Sabrewulfs command run followups are projectile invincible but the run itself is vulnerable.
ANYWAYS I’M BORED so I’m going to speculate on Glacius’s moveset based on what was shown in the reveal vid.
Horizontal Icepick: Glacius arm transforms into a horizontal spiky ice lance. Looks similar to his classic Icepick anti-air attack except its aimed horizontally. This looks like a great zoning tool and if it can be used as a combo opener than Glacius could be an amazing offensive zoner type character. If Glacius also has his traditional anti-air he will control a huge amount of space…
Ground Ice Shards: Glacius punches the ground with both fists and razor sharp ice shards erupt from the ground. I’m thinking this may be Glacius’s new projectile and it may work like ground-pound type moves like C. Viper and Jack X (sfxt). So maybe the strength of the button determines where the shards will erupt from? EX. lp=in front, mp=midscreen, hp=fullscreen.
What they didn’t show: Liquidize (T1000 teleport uppercut) and Cold Shoulder. Not sure if they’ll be able to recreate that terminator-style “liquid metal” effect in realtime but I hope this move returns. Also Cold Shoulder might be redundant if he can use the horizontal Icepick as an opener…
Yeah Glacius is looking pretty fun. His play style will obviously gravitate towards that of a zoner, but hopefully he has solid mix ups so he isn’t completely dedicated towards that and fucked if he has to rush. His song was always my favorite from the original game and everytime I hear the song it makes me wanna pick him up.
Sabrewulf looks like the easiest character to just get in and get going with. Typical Rufus/Wolverine type character of the game. His dash reminds me a lot of 3S Ibuki’s dash for getting in and mixing up so I’ll have to try him just based on that. Not sure who I want to main. Fulgore was always my favorite character, but Sabrewulf and Glacius look really fun also.
Yea I used Fulgore the most. He just looked the most badass to me. I hope he continues to look cool. Based on the characters I’ve seen so far, I’m confident he will. Cyber Wolverine Predator pwange 2013.
I pretty much played every character since they were all kinda samey but I mostly mained Cinder back in the 90s. Of course I didn’t know about all of his broken shit at the time lol.
Yeah there’s a lot of animations that look really good IMO. Plus the game has to go through all of those combos really fast so there isn’t much time to display the animations. When you get to see some of the normals whiff like Jago’s s.HP it looks pretty good to me. Can’t wait to check it out in person at Evo.
Turtling is a style, but it can be irritating to fight especially for people who like to auto-pilot offense. This game so far does seem like it discourages defense. But then again so did Mahvel an look at Chris G.
Yeah there’s like a ton of defensive types of play and some are more defensive than others. Morri/Doom is more like a really powerful zone than it is straight up turtling or runaway. It just forces you to be locked into a position on the screen that allows Morrigan to do what she wants. Lately he’s been playing more offensively though since Morrigan’s ground movement isn’t strong enough to deal with a lot of the faster characters. Wolverine you’re forced to play the poke or rush game against. He’s not going to give you time at the start.
I can’t really think of a fighting game since CVS2 where long term turtling was a dominant strategy. The mixups in that game are pretty reactable and there’s a shit ton of defensive options to make it actually work.
