Kick your sneakers off and relax~ Guy General Discussion Thread

nebbiez am glad to hear marq has his own flow chart(we all don’t play guy the same way). The best Guy players in the world or US~thing is something that comes with the spotlight(we get jealous ).When you contact marq teddy again tell him we mean no harm and criticism comes from what we aspect of him.If he was not a good/top player no one would care if he gets bopped or not.I watch wnf for tekken injustice marq rip aris alex valle and b.b. jon,I look forward to it every Wednesday after work.

honestly, and with all due respect. it just seems that he doesnt have anything to offer the forums and it also seems that he doesnt even refer to them. seems kinda petty to avoid criticism. especially from those that know and have the same issues as you do. unless our issues are different from his. And if that is the case i would love for the knowledge that he is keepin to himself to be contributed to the forums. I wish for the day that you guys critic my game play it only makes me better. and info that is not necessary is forgotten. Marq teddy is not the best guy player by no means. and he knows that. i honestly dont even care who the best player is. By me sayin that i am not knockin his skill at all. i just feel that he misrepresents guy to alot of people that watch it. and people tryin to learn guy will be misguided watchin him play. i used to play guy in his rushdown constant unsafe basically senseless(flowchart) play style and it was probably the most frustrating time ive had playin this game. Guy should not be successful playin this way. I mean we can just look at the number of Guys on the west and this is apparent. despite how we feel about his play, it is getting him wins and that in turn puts him in the spot light. his location also helps alot with his popularity. and i am sayin it this way because to me, Marq Teddy sayin that he rather stay away from the Guy community is only showin me (and confirming to me) his arrogance as a player. Every guy player that i have ever met that actually had love for the character has been nothin but helpful to me. The others dont stay around for long. i dont think Marq will stick with guy in the next edition. I feel hes here for now and whatever gets him the wins next game is where he will go. Which is not a problem but it doesnt really make me care for his contribution either way. sorry for any excessive hostility (Endrant)

I think you got it twisted Shaynet. I’m sure Marq is gonna stay with Guy. And I don’t wanna speak on his behalf or put words in his mouth, but from what he’s said to me it sounds like he’s sick of other Guy players asking him “Why did you do that? That was unsafe!” He openly admits he plays unsafe a lot of the time and understands the mind games behind this. You build up certain expectations of your opponent during a set. This is why, in spite of it being ridiculed as a day 1 scrub noob tactic, you see so many wakeup ultras work in high level tournament play. You assume and expect your opponent to not go for something so wreckless so you go for a meaty attack and get blown up for it. But Marq is tired of other Guy players not understanding this and hating on him for not playing safe all the time. Let’s take Japanese players Kiryu and Kiyo for example. They mostly play really patiently and safely. But ask yourself this…how many tournaments has that ever won them? Is it better to play risk-free and lose, or wreckless and win? You can’t knock Marq’s tournament results. He is consistantly beating all of SoCal’s top players apart from Snake Eyez. But who here can say they’ve ever beaten who is effectively the best Zangief player on the planet? I’ve played AquaSilk online and beat him sometimes and won a couple of casual games against Itabashi offline. But Snake Eyez… without playing him i can’t comment but he looks tough as HELL! As Marq would certainly testify to himself. He is yet to ever beat him in a set.

Misrepresent, thats the word.

I guess I was disappointed at the so called “best Guy” people have been telling me about.

Hard to believe UltraDavid and Chen havent seen better.

i completely understand that any and every tactic included in any game, especially fighting games, is a viable one when used correctly and thats not my issue with Mr. Teddy. i feel that he never chooses to go the safe route even when it is the right decision. and this is only from vids that i have come in contact with. he never makes “good” decisions. and by that i mean one that reward out weighs the risk, ever. Why is it every time i watch him play and win i think “wow this guy is really lucky” and that may be my lack of understanding but i have never learned something watchin his play. just watched it and moved on. and i would love for him to continue to play guy that would be great. i just feel his play style is not one to be acknowledged as the best guy. now let me end by sayin this. he is very solid. he gets his combos and he never gets flustered or pushed away from his goal. Great player but like i said i feel the way he plays and wins misrepresents how to truly play and win with guy. just the opinion of someone who knows nothin about winnin tournaments. lol

Kiryu doesnt play offline really, and Kiyo He’s placed the same at EVO back to back. In terms of other tournaments Im not sure since we dont get a large japanese coverage.

This is just the process of match-up learning. The more people he beats, the more they’re gonna learn the match-up and eventually understand that ex hozanto is punishable, that running overhead kick isn’t actually THAT hard to block/punish, that the elbow can be walked under/ultra punished/whiff etc etc. That’s when you’re supposed to see matches based largely on the ground game.

It’s just a shame considering how old the game is, people still don’t know these things.

it’s not even about his offense really, if he gets away with stuff then who cares. it’s just that he refuses to block and when he’s forced to or gets baited he gets easily opened up. there’s no patience or footsies to learn from, he’ll either mash on short or ex tatsu on wake up constantly and it’s frustrating to watch because it feels like he doesn’t care if he wins or loses as long as he gets to press buttons and hit combos

Thoughts on the Double Ultra and Red Focus.

Double Ultra- Matchup/Character Specific, damage appears to be around the same of the average super so 300-350 (when fully stocked) I don’t see it being used often except against characters that this can help turn the tides or shuts down many options all at once.

Red Focus. Not liking how it can infinitely absorb, I feel that should be nullified to a certain amount of attacks considering you can focus an entire super against certain characters and have half/full ultra within seconds. I feel that this should receive a limit of use like once/twice per round. It wasn’t mentioned that level 2 was unblockable so hopefully that was removed.

Dude red focus looks like something that should stay in those PC modded versions of SF4. Level 2 better not be unblockable cos there are characters who have crazy focuses already. And with the 2 ultras option - that just makes some match-ups even more difficult, like Zangief for example.

I’m not crying about it , but considering Guy’s hard-to-use U2, and his inability to blow up red focuses as easily as some characters i.e tatsu - I think these system changes are more against him than in favour; I still look forward to personalized changes/buffs/fixes though.

You can cancel into EX hozanto or Bushin flip, if they hit you in the air they get nothing from it and wasted 2 bars of meter (requires 2 bars to activate red focus apparently)

So that doesn’t mean much at all to hinder Guy, plus you can still FADC your target combo and from the looks of it I don’t think lvl 2 is unblockable or breaks armor so you can still do a EX Run stop and still be safe most likely, which would benefit us more because you can just mash our a grab/ultra/backdash etc to stop the focus or if they release it you’ll still be safe if it isn’t a level 3.

The dual ulltras won’t make a lot of matches difficult by any means… that’s less damage they are sacrificing for 2 options… which Guy’s Ultra 2 can do away with that… it beats U1 and you recover in time to punish U2 most of the time. Sure you wasted your own Ultra meter but now Gief has nothing to heavily rely on.

So is U2 better to use against gief? (current edition)

If they like to gamble with green hands then probably.

I still see the Gief matchup becoming worse because of the stupid startup and active frames on his Ultra 2. Guy already has problems anti-airing Gief and if they pick both ultras, even ex anti-airs will be risky. Any dmg taken from Gief is crucial in this match-up, so saying the ultras do less dmg doesn’t mean much.

I don’t see characters like Ryu/Rufus/Viper etc using both ultras, simply cos they rely on U1 so much already.

I had to find out how to fight the gief match-up without jumping or using ex Bushin Senpukyaku(kinda hard to win)."Any dmg taken from Gief is crucial in this match-up, so saying the ultras do less dmg doesn’t mean much."True we need to get that health lead and run but the plan is the same, neutral jumps will be less rewarding now tho XC.

Gief has less range on his light spd so the range we space him out at will be that same be we will not get grab from crazy ranges so no need to worry.Guy’s far/close st.hk,Cr.mp,U2 (punish)should be alot better to use + st.mp~hp bushin flip should still jail us from getting U2 trapped in a corner.

Last thing I like to say if you want to panic about guy in Ultra think about level 2 unblockables from fei-long,dudley,hakan,akuma aka red focus attack, which will take all non armor breaking strikes hopefully they have to commit( no back/forward dash) to this action to leaving them open for baits.

Well just to add to that - we’ll probably see Fei Longs using both ultras from now on - so if you thought it was risky to meaty him before, there’s the ultra 2 lottery in there too! Great!

lol(I main fei in sf4 vanilla)feel that match ups are going to be crazy hype with a random factor. Now that target combos could leave you open ,rekka characters also have to now think more, non block strings like cr.mk ex fireball now have a bigger risk also.http://media.eventhubs.com/images/2013/10/24_usf401.jpg

True. BUt like blood said - you could cancel TC into ex hozANTO!!! hopefully that comes out fast enough cos focus is generally slow.

The level 2 from Red Focus is no longer unblockable, Combofiend would have directly said that in the video, when it was leaked during that secret Loktest it was an unblockable but they since then removed it as many said that is OP. Red Focus also takes 2 bars of your super meter to use. So in itself it’s a gamble, a very large one because you want to benefit from it since the most you will gain back is close to 1 bar of meter.

Onto the Gief matchup. I have never had any problem AA Gief. I use cr.mp, st.hp, st.hk and st.lk All have treated me quite well and I’ve focused on a ground game primarily. I’ve faced Giefs that specialize in both Ultras and have yet to meet a Gief that has completely dominated me in a match. So I need not worry what either will do. I primarily use U1 in this matchup but if they use both I’ll likely use U2 because one they still have to make that read. If I do U2 and he goes for U1 right after my activation, I win out. If he does U2 I still win out. Giefs best option is to backdash because he can punish my recovery. Jumping is a good option but he has to have a very low hitting move to catch Guy and chances are he won’t likely get a combo off of it unless his headbutt reaches. When using both Ultras when I say the damage is garbage… i literally mean garbage, A full raw ultra will likely do the same damage as your average super so that will likely be inbetween 300-350 maybe less. So it’s already a bad option because by the time you get half ultra… You’re at half life, full ultra you’re going to be close to dead if you weren’t focusing moves. So if you have a life lead, getting them to waste ultra benefits you a lot more than it benefits them because they won’t largely close the gap as they do now. So if you know how to play that matchup you won’t have to worry.

Guy vs Red Focus. Considering that level 2 has not been confirmed of being unblockable by Combofiend, this doesn’t hurt our character severely. If they Red Focus a TC. You have several options to choose from. EX Run stop which will likely be the most viable. 3 Hits of armor 17 frames of recovery. If they release the move before the level 3 you will be safe if they caught you during the stop portion, And if they hold it you can still jump away/throw/ultra/block til the last second and do a move etc. You can still cancel into EX hozanto if you feel they will hold the focus, or simply do st.mp ex hozanto as you primarily would against a focus attack Bushin Flip, chances are they will likely catch you in the air if they manage to hit you. which not many will benefit greatly from this, all they will receive is grey damage and only recover very little meter. Tatsu’s aren’t a good choice imo.

Better start thinking, learning, and adapting to use all of Guy’s tool. Hit the lab and start grinding matches… I’ve been in training against Honda just to find things out against the character and perfecting things… You guys should do that for Gief if that match is troubling you that much :coffee:

Blood I hope its not unblockable. Only thing confirm are is does not have a set number of times it absorb multi-hits and is a lvl2.Are you coming to PA for NEC?

Currently yes I am coming to NEC as of right now. I want to attend a loktest see what’s up by that current build. Hopefully I can be invited or its an open event.
