Kick your sneakers off and relax~ Guy General Discussion Thread

I’m like a half a week late because I don’t check these parts too much these days, but how did it go?

If this is to me, got top 8, sadly AE was never streamed, cause DOA5 was like streamed the ENTIRE tourney and only the finals of every other game got streamed while AE met a split, never got to fight Dieminion, Chris G, Neo or Noel Brown but whatevs. Marlinpie got knocked out early as well.

Since I’m here I’ve heard this discussion a few times and honestly right now I’m curious. Who is the best Guy player in the US.

I’ve heard Kreymore and Tanaka come up several times, and lastly I hear Redman, simply because he beats everyone “granted its online” that Kreymore and Tanaka have often lost to. So I simply want a gather of opinions on who everyone think is the best representative of Guy in general in the USA.

Hey everyone, I’m writing some stuff down about matchups and general shit that I’m learning as guy in training mode (cant get online cuz my account is banned, long story lol) and I got some good stuff so far in the dictator and ryu matchup, if anyone is interested I’ll post it on the forums, let me know. If not, fuck it haha I may have posted this before but I found a frame trap that’s awesome that I dont see anyone use, I know its situational though but basically you do clstmk into clsthp, I recorded it in training and tried crouch teching and I cant get out of it at all, plus it does huge damage and if you mix it up with throws it could be really useful, try it in training and see what i mean, it wont work well against everyone and still needs testing but its great against ryu plus it puts you just outside his crmk range if you dont cancel the sthp into anything.

Can he mash DP out of it?

Yeah he can but even that is pretty hard to do and it seems to trade most of the time with lp srks, still I guess it’s a good thing because if he couldnt dp then there wouldnt be a gap to catch his tech, also if you think he might mash dp you can use bushin flip in your blockstrings to grab him out of it, theres a few setups but off the top off my head the best way to catch a dp is to use the target combo into mp bushin flip and then hit punch just above his head so you dont cross over and leave yourself open as much. or you can mix it up by walking back/ blocking after the close mk.

The only way you have a true blockstring from cl mk is if you do cr.lk since cl st mk is +3. 2 Frame blockstrings are hard to mash out of it just because normally you have to see it and anticipate it coming. That’s why I try to use cr lp, st hp, lp hozanto in corners for pressure/frametraps.

That makes sense, I know guy doesnt have many true or safe blockstrings so I’m trying to find as many ways to use his normals like this as possible.
This might be worth trying with guy
He uses crhp trade into ultra 1 in the video, it might even work with other moves like clsthp too.
Does loads of damage

^ I already knew about this but I like the way Air explained it. So basically your buffering Ultra 1 fast during Guy’s crHp. CrHp is one of my favorite moves and works well against some characters like Cammy and Fei Long. But why was he testing against Bison, is it because he has a bigger hurt box?

I believe Bison does have a wider hit box than most characters do.

In corner:
Bushin Gokusaken (Down+HK), St. MP into Run > Stop into U2.

I know its gimmicky, but I was wondering is it worth the input?

There’s always a risk when you use U2 in this fashion. You’re better off saving it for punish situations and catching safe jumps and meaty overheads (for example).

Yeah I’m trying my best to utilize Guy’s ultra 2 in variety of ways, even going so far on being gimmicky. Maybe I just need to stick to that formula you’ve mentioned and go from there. Thank you, nebbiez.

Eirokaj you play SSF4 again?

Yes, but just not my main focus anymore. I know things turned off to a bad end, but I’m still dedicated on learning new things with Guy. It seems I can’t let go that game for the sake of my life.

Your right, its hard for me to stay away from this game as well. I just want Guy to do well, thats why I’m always finding and learning new things in training mode. Practical or not, he’s gimmicky so nothing off the table. I’ve been practicing alot with Run Slide FADC vortex and starting to like it alot.

Oh trust me, I used to use U2 exclusively, and that was before it only had a 1 frame startup. I’ve gone for a million gimmicky setups before. Sometimes they do work and are very satisfying, other times you will get blown up hard for your mistake. But the way I see it is, if you have ultra stocked then you’ve lost at least about 50% of your health (depending on how many focus absorbs you’ve gone for too). But let’s assume you’re at 50% or less life. That is NOT a good situation to be in to start throwing out what is effectively a random ultra. I’m not saying it will never work and it’s never the right option to go for. That’s down to your own instinct as a player - if you can feel that they’re gonna go for a cr. throw tech OS or just hit a button in general, then by all means go for it if you want to. But to me personally, if I’m already down 50% life at least in a round, going for a random ultra that’s easily jumped or DP’d just isn’t a smart play. Sometimes it’s worth hanging on to U2 RIGHT til the bitter end. Most high level players tend to save cheap gimmicks (meaty overheads, etc.) until the end of the round. So even if you have only got a pixel or 2 of life left, U2 can often come to the rescue by catching out some desperate move they go for to try and finish you off. Also, if your opponent knows the Guy matchup well, U2 is a great threat tool. It may make many moves which were previously safe on block now punishable, and it catches safe jumps and many characters after they do an FADC -> forward dash. If they know that, then it creates a bit of breathing room for you because they know that going for anything stupid will result in them being ultra punished every time. But to be honest, most people really don’t seem to know the Guy matchup at all, which again can work in your favour because they will keep going for safe jumps without realising they’re committing suicide. It’s certainly more of a mind game ultra than U1 is, that’s for sure.

It’s good to see you still devoted to Guy as well. We can always chat on PSN again if you like; I know for sure I can learn some helpful new tech from you. : )

Also, I’ve been hearing about Guy’s vortex. How does that work?

Personally, I use U2 after the first match to see if the person likes to DP or reversal in any way. I use it to punish DPs. I also use it against Guy seeing as it punishes a lot of his stuff. I sometimes use it in the middle of people’s “blockstrings” as U2 never loses to a normal/poke. But other than that, I’ll use U1 for combos, fireball-heavy people and the other reasons U1 is easier to connect…

I hear you guys are PSN players. That’s cool because so am I. I played xIROCx and Eirokaj before and I love playing you guys just because I can never find any other good Guy players. If you guys are wondering who I am, **nemesys_syndrome **is my PSN tag.

Awesome to see you here as well, nemesys!

You remember who I am, Eirokaj?
