Kick your sneakers off and relax~ Guy General Discussion Thread

The Guy player you speak of that lost to Mingo is Streak.

Since you live in NY you can probably set up a meet with him as he is from the same state. Also you can venture to CT and play me at a tournament (during casuals at Gaming ETC if you wish.) Mostly Ibuki should aim for a knockdown vs Guy especially when he has meter or doesnt have meter, since that setups the kunai vortex and her mixup game. Most Guy players will spend bar for a get out of jail free card against the kunai instead of attempting to block it. Aside from that Ibuki has great ground pressure and a good air game due to her air throw. Most Guy players won’t/shouldn’t focus against her since you have an array of target combos and armor breaking moves.

This is perfect I need the training for Season’s Beatings and I’m really behind in the Ibuki match up so we can keep each other plus I need to get back into SF anyway been too busy to even play it plus I’m feeling really bad right now probably a cold or something. I will make sure to add you

As Blooddrunk mentioned earlier, I was the Guy player who you ran into before the singles tournament, and Mingo put me in Losers’ Bracket:

Ibuki needs to take risks to get the knockdown that she seeks: risky jump-in attacks and “random” (unexpected) sweeps. Otherwise, she’ll never win the match because Guy beats her on the ground. When used properly, st.MK beats all of her normal attacks, and cr.MP is a great counter-poke especially when buffered with EX Hozanto (Shoulder Attack).

I see who you are streak, we actually played in casuals before the tournament, I lost to you =)
That’s why I could realize when playing you. Guy’s st.MK > Ibuki.
If you’re in the NY area I’d be glad to meet you offline and play a bit, I often go to Next Level (I’m actually goin tonight) and I also host offline sessions at my place on Saturdays.
What I also need is to get used to Guy’s pressure and to be able to see where the gaps are. right now I can pretty much beat you by relying on a sweep and vortex you to death (I noticed Guy players are kinda EX Run-happy, but watch out to use it wisely as Ibuki has a few setups + OS designed to make your EX run whiff and catch it =D ), but if you happen to hit first, I’m having trouble.
Thanks Dante, we’ll play together soon!

Well the thing is Ibuki’s Vortex is roughly giving her coverage for about 12-13 frames (I tested off of her neck breaker grab for her vortex, Guy can U1 her and super her, plus an immediate EX Runslide is viable if he runs ni the direction Ibuki lands.

But Guy’s pressure isn’t as great many think, most of his pressure leaves him at -1 or -2, outside of frame traps.

What the hell… I got hit with that jumping headbutt move(should be j.HP?) of a gief and got instantly stunned o_O I only got hit by a jab or two before that as well, surely this must be a bug right? was so fucking pissed. cant post the vid since I forgot to save the replay and it 's not on latest games list anymore

Gief’s neutral jump 9.HP (or 7.HP, I don’t remember) deals a fuckton of stun if Counter Hit. If I remember well, CH j.9HP = approximately 600 stun. He can stun Seth with j.9HP - st.HP lol.

@Blooddrunk

An Ibuki who knows what she’s doing (which is not my case yet against Guy lol) will time her kunais in order to make anything you do whiff. Kunais are meaties, so you can’t delay your reversal, and if you go for a reversal, unles Ibuki messed up her setups you’ll end up whiffing EX Tatsu, running on the opposite side/whiffing your Ultra. Aside from EX run I wouldn’t advise you to mash any reversal (except occasional EX Tatsu because Ibuki’s common setups loose to EX tatsu, and, just like myself, most Ibukis don’t know Guy-specific setups ^^ )

Hey Damascus, sorry, I didn’t see your post until just recently. Unfortunately, I make sporadic appearances at Next Level, and I almost never go to Big Two because it’s on Wednesdays. Staying late at night in Brooklyn and having work the following morning isn’t a good combination. If you want to PM me your location, I can head over to your place one Saturday, and we can talk all about the Guy vs. Ibuki match up.

Been a bit busy but I’ve been working a little on some match up stuff. I’ll try to get it done by the end of the week. Cammy and Balrog should be by Sunday.

Shockingly no one has really been asking for Matchups.

I do know the Deejay Matchup quite well.

Cammy mu thread would be very nice,I fucking hate that bitch

I went to a tourney in Boston this weekend. Had some fun. My goal was to win. Didn’t do so hot.

I played in a 5v5 EMP vs. Boston and even though I lost my match, Jeron OCV’d Boston.

It’s the second to last match of this archive. http://www.twitch.tv/gameunderground/b/334031392

I lost to CP (Best Ken in Boston) and for the first time ever, lost to BlueNine’s Juri (EX Pinwheel ftw). I played casuals later on with some of New England’s finest. Merkilo’s Rufus, CitizenCIA’s Hakan and Mingo, who I feel is the best Ibuki on the East Coast. Didn’t get a chance to play Gridman though. Congrats to him for winning the tourney.

I finally got to play GuyofKaillera offline, another well known Guy player. He’s very good and passionate about the character. I think if he checked the forums more often he’d be a lot better. He was also rocking the Guy Nike Dunks. Godlike.

I WILL be going to NEC this year, and every single Tri State regional between then and now. It’s time to show everyone what true Bushinryu demands.

Fuck if I had known you were going I would have went, I know CP personally his Ken is definitely no slouch haven’t faced him since Super I think, Bluenine will never go Abel which saddens me… but yeah he definitely abuses EX pinwheel. I almost end up losing to him or FREEJ4Y at our locals.

Dude, how do you deal with lame Deejays? If he’s holding back all day, there seems to be very little Guy can do. You might get the odd MP hozanto or EX run slide under a fireball. But even that is risky because Deejay can blow up any run attempts with EX dash kicks. I know what I’m doing when I’m in close and can get my offence going, but against really good Deejays I’m at a loss of how to get in on them without taking stupid risks (jumping in, bushin flip, run). There’s a really good Deejay that I play and against me he just gets the life lead then more or less spends the rest of the round running away, picking off any jump in or run in attempts. In general, this play style really pisses me off. And the fact Deejay is such an annoying prick anyway “Heyyyy!!!” it just frustrates me and I end up doing stupid stuff to just try and hit him. I have this same problem with El Fuerte too. It seems that part of their character design and play style is to infuriate the opponent into making mistakes.

FWIW, I personally just walk up or do EX run slide whenever I anticipate a fireball. Best thing to do is to goad him into using rolling sobat since you can punish it with MP > RSL, damn near all the time.

Deejay just seems like a weaker version of Guile. If he is trying to play lame, then it’s not as hard to get in as it is against Guile. There’s no standing fierce, jump air throw etc. I’ve played Deejay’s of varying levels but I’ve never really thought this match-up to be in his favour; rather I see it to be in Guy’s favour. Guy can chase him down whatever escape he uses on wake up and can punish his unsafe specials really well followed by setups.

His dmg output is also low and I don’t recall any counterhit setups of his that are dangerous…just don’t get thrown cos his cross-ups are pretty ambiguous. Not a great punish character either.

All of this is true. Affii is the specific player I’m thinking about in my above post. I know that he knows the ambiguous cross up vortex after a hard knockdown and has dirty jumping knee setups, but that kinda thing isn’t the main problem for me. It’s just all the laming out. I see what you mean about him being like a weaker version of Guile, but the Guile matchup always seems to go better for me. The problem is those damn up kicks. A much better move than flash kick I think. That move, particularly the EX version, is like jumping into a brick wall every time. It can be easy to make flash kicks whiff or even knock Guile out of them with elbow drops if mistimed. But Deejay’s damn EX up kicks. Whether it autocorrects or not, it blows you up every time. So I stay on the ground but then if he spends the whole round running away always maintaining charge, it’s really difficult for me to try and get anything going without resorting to desperate measures like run -> overhead - which Affii knows to stand block on reaction and punish. Then I just get mad at myself for doing stupid shit and end up losing the match under a pile of salt lol

I play against FREEJ4Y locally, so I play against a competent one. He does indeed play the lame style for the most part. Simply because he knows the matchups, understands how to beat Guy and what not to do against me. You mainly want to stay within st mk range against DeeJay, Your normals will beat his, and you can punish Sobats with St mp at this range, A lot of Deejays will use LK sobat because its -5 and the only normal that will hit is st mp. You’ll have to plink it for good measure and I would halt on doing runslide unless you see the confirmed hit or have 2 bars just in case you miss the punish. So I would opt for lp hozanto or MP/HP Bushin flip. Never use LP bushin flip against him, they will just Upkick you and put you in back in your worst position. MP and HP will at least trick them and keep them honest or have them delay their reversal, HP I believe will always get you out of danger and you punish him. MP will grab him if they let it rip early and its iffy on delayed. Also at that range they normally won’t throw a fireball, but if they do, reaction EX Runslide, or Mp hozanto. If you’re being zoned, don’t jump. That’s what they will look for and it will not work out for you, Just walk/dash block until you close the distance where he will have to be careful with what he does, ALWAYS try to keep 1-2 bars on you. Also don’t run blindly, what you can do is do a quick run stop, ex runstop, But that’s about it, he can AA you with relative ease, so don’t do anything stupid. The match is like Guile, remain patience pick your spots correctly as Af0 said.
Oh and get Deejay to burn meter, if he uses U1, he will definitely strive on pushing you into the corner and getting that free 200 chip to seal the deal if need be. Remember your standard safe jumps do work on hit but you may to slightly time your attacks so they won’t whiff. Deejay isn’t overly dangerous he just has the tools that work well against Guy.
