Last minute decision to go to Final Round. Tune in to Team Sp00ky’s stream to see all the action.
I saw you’re on the team for the Afrodojo 5v5.I wanna see your Guy/Abel crack some heads.Good luck!
Sorry guys, I’m usually from the Makoto section but decided to pick up Guy because he’s just so fun. Also, really love how you guys have the hitbox information in one of your stickies!
But I’m having problems trying to find some setups into Ultra 2 that aren’t just:
-Wakeup > Ultra 2
or -Focus Attack > Dash > Ultra 2
Any way someone here could help me out?
I might just be blind and totally missed it when I was looking over the threads.
Also, looking forward to Final Round!
It’s mainly used as a punishment Ultra, like for whiffed dps, Ultras, or if you can sometimes bait out of a move, But it’s hard to use and Guy necessarily doesn’t always need to use his Ultra but most people nowadays even Kiryu are sticking with U1 rather than U2.
I kinda had a thought that that would be the case.
In a lot of the matches I’ve played already, I had almost no need to use Ultra, but there are times when I throw it out just to let my opponent know that its a tool I was willing to use.
What are the benefits of U1? Being able to combo into it in the corner? (I’m not sure if you can do it midscreen, haven’t tried it out yet). Does it go through projectiles? I’m not quite sure but I think it actually does less damage when comboing into it than it does if you just threw it out raw. Of course, that wouldn’t be safe though.
I’m just not used to this, lol.
With Makoto, I was always trying to find ways to get my Karakusa > U1 out and with Guy, there are matches sometimes when I forget I have an Ultra entirely.
The only setup I use is FA> Dash> Ultra 2
I believe the ultra 2 works better as a punishment, I use a lot against safe jump, and bad reversal
But in most of the matchs I prefer Ultra 1
It’s been a strange trip regarding Guy’s ultras - I’m starting to use U2 against a lot of the cast. I’ve noticed in higher level play the opponnent reacts to it more, psychologically anyway. They’ll tech less, they’ll backdash on wake up, or even hold jump on wake up. All these are punishable by Guy.
Holding down back is obviously the best option, but with the fear of being caught teching by U2, they might do airborne reversals or not tech at all.
In a lot of matches I mainly land ultra 1 by focus crumple, so I’m starting to use U2 because I can land it on crumple, and it carries the mind games with it, whether I use it or not. Unless you’re landing ex hozanto cancel into Ultra 1 in the corner often, I’d recommend U2.
I’m just recalling a post someone made months ago stating similar things about U2 and their experience. I understand it more now.
And another thing, Guy can be bullied pretty easy on wake up, especially with no meter, so having Ultra 2 always poses a danger to your opponent if they’re keen to meaty you. Ultra 1 on wake up isn’t such a great option on the other hand.
regarding abel’s U2…
does any 1 tried to do ex hozanto? when abel does u2? im not sure but i think its better to break the armor with amazing speed instead of ninja sickle df rh… cant tell if abel will grab ex hozanto before the 1st active frame…
Okay, so I just got back from Final Round. Very good event however my performance was completely horrific.
ATL apparently still goes hard on Super. I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise since they don’t have AE yet. I played with Abel during the 5v5 because the team was more comfortable with it. Aside vs. Dru (Honda) and Cardell (Chun-Li), I think I would have done decent with Guy but whatever. Final score was 13-9 Team Georgia.
In singles it was a mixture of playing bad and getting mauled, period. 2nd round I played against one of ATL’s best Ryu players. He just safe jumped me to death with late tech cr. short and just did low forward buffer into fireball every round. Somehow I still made the score 2-1 but he sent me to losers. He would also mash cr. jab through all of my block strings with a succeeded hit confirm combo. Most of my damage came from trading footsies with Ryu’s superior low forward whilst clutching out some rounds with run/overhead.
4th round in losers I play some Dhalsim/Blanka player. I destroyed his Dhalsim and he switches to Blanka. He literally got a 5% chip lead and ran for 99 seconds every round.
ComboFiend and I had a talk about Guy. He is just too hard to win with in Super. If people don’t want to fight you, they can just hold down back all day and not do anything. He practically went 2 and out as well. He was focused way more on MvC3 anyway.
People just don’t respect the character. He’s ass. I’m sure most of us Guy players are resourceful and try to engineer strategies and setups that will help improve the potential of the character, but unfortunately, the developers just didn’t make it that way. When Guy is in trouble, what fall back strategy does he have to run to?
It has nothing to do with us being bad players, but I know for a fact that if I channeled all my mental energies into playing a character like Guile, I would be a recognizable player like my brother.
It’s just pride over victory.
By the way, they are re-patching AE when it comes out on console. So our current arcade version will be obsolete as well. I just hope they keep AE Guy the same.
I have a plan for the next major. I don’t care for this game anymore so I’m just going to go with the plan.
Yeah on the defence Guy gets bullied when he’s got no meter. Even with 4 bars, if you oponnent sniffs out an ex tatsu, you’re done. I don’t get why they didn’t ex hurricane move cancellable. I’d seriously waste 3 bars on it in some situtations.
Often I get Ryu players who like to hang back and wait for me to attack them. I think it’s very important to notice if your oponnent is going for that strategy, cos it can really hurt Guy. Soon as I notice it, I do light bushin flips from full screen till they get impatient and start throwing projectiles. If they start doing that u can easily go in with long bushin flip.
I saw one or two other Guy players on the stream. They weren’t too bad but their offense after Guy’s throw or after a knockdown wasn’t there.
One reason I’m starting to use Ultra 2 more is cos I feel Guy is less “free” on the defence. Your oponnent thinks twice before meaties, especially when Guy has no meter and he’s on U1, u can meaty him free.
Guy is so quick! Opponents have a hard time keeping up.
Does anyone have a good Guy on PSN?
I could use a mentor
This is pretty late, but on pg 14 there’s advice on how to deal with abel’s U2 - using down forward roundhouse early on abel’s wake up to get 2 hits on him while you’re airbourne. This way ex tornado and U2 gets beaten…however if Abel blocks he can reversal punish with breathless. I think it’s called the ninja sickle(?) but down forward RH has pretty bad recovery and it’s only the pushback that makes it seem safe. I haven’t tested his ultra 1 on it, but there’s isn’t anything else he can punish with.
I’ve had recent successes with using Ex Hozanto just outside of my opponants Footsie range. I’ve notice when I play against the computer, he use’s it all the time to achieve counter hits and whiff punish whatever I’m doing. I figured Ex Hozanto is used to EXTEND Guy’s footsie’s, since Guy’s normal footsie’s are at short range. My mentalitly now is to counter whatever my opponant is doing, by being just outside of their striking zone. Also according to the Prima Guide, they advise you to stay at a good distance generally from your opponant anyway in order to achieve pokes. Pretty much the only time I go in for rushdown is on a knockdown and apply mixup and run stop pressure. But at the core, my goal is to push my opponant in the corner. It’s rare that I use Ex Hozanto after Bushin Chain Combo unless I’m going to end a match. Seeing the Ex Hozanto don’t do that much damage, I choose to reserve the meter to play footsie’s. But overall my Mentalitly is to Counter whatever my opponant is doing.
^Are you me? I’ve just started doing this aswell. I think that using it to whiff punish must be its purpose because it doesnt have any other uses.If it did it would have been given some sort of invincibility or its damage would be better so it would hurt more in combos.
Sorry for neglecting the Guy forums since the release of MvC3. My local scene has almost completely stopped playing SSFIV, so I haven’t been playing much at all. I’ll keep updating the match up thread until the AE (or Ultra Edition, or whatever it’s going to be called) DLC comes out, and then I’ll let someone else take care of a new match up thread.
not really a technical question but one that has been bothering me for quite some time
why isn’t Guy more popular than he is. he seems to meet the criteria. alot of casuals and hardcore players like characters for cosmetic purposes. I mean what more can you ask for, he’s from a classic series, he’s a ninja, he has “hip” sneakers, did i mention he’s a ninja wearing sneakers? He has a red outfit, red is a popular color, he has ton of cool animations, moves and taunts and possibly his ultra 2 might be one of the coolest looking ones in the game.
i just don’t get it, i mean i’m glad he’s not ken or ryu and whored out to the max online, but i just don’t understand his lack of popularity, he seems so much cooler than the rest of the characters, even if you don’t like his play style or taking the time to learn him he seems like he would be someone people would gravitate towards because of the factors mentioned above. He never seemed to live up to his potential, capcom doesn’t seem to care about him either. i don’t remember the alpha movie that well but i don’t think he had a key role, he was beat out in vanilla 4 by other alpha characters, he doesn’t appear in crossovers that much if at all, and i’m not even sure if he plays an important role in the street fighter universe.
i don’t get it? am i underestimating guy’s popularity or is there something i’m missing that easily explains why he’s not that popular or liked despite him being “cool.” it just doesn’t make sense, maybe you SF vets will know? what am i not seeing???
Simple. Guy takes skill to play he’s a lot harder to play than at least half of the cast. Which is one valid reason why he isn’t popular. His rushdown game is good but lacking in the face of other characters, Also your execution/reaction has to be spot on. Execution may not be as strict as C.Viper but its in the line of it. His normals are sub-par at best. Even with his AE buffs he still has to work for wins much harder than most of the cast. Comparing him to his Alpha iteration Guy just isn’t how he was… or well should be in this case. Still able to dish out things but, he still can’t just be picked up and played on the fly like some of the characters. He’s popular sure, but popularity doesn’t always mean everything.
Well hes popular as a character in Japan… Being no 10 on the MvC3 poll…with ken and cammy being the only SF chars above him should speak of his popularity there…
I guess if you want more players playing him… he should be Yun good… or atleast be sorta easy mode … both oh which Guy isnt… Which makes it even more Fuking badass to main Guy and own someone
I just saw a video titled SSF4 AE DLC for Xbox and PS3 on youtube. I read somewhere that it will be out around June. The twins, evil ryu and oni will be playable. And there’s an advanced Replay Mode that will let you follow your favorite players. My hope is that there will be other playable charicters such as Karin that will make it in the final cut and maybe some new stages as well. Personally I think the video is just to kill MK9 hype, which I don’t care for…
