Kick your sneakers off and relax~ Guy General Discussion Thread

Ever notice how cr.mk is literally Balrogs achillies heal during his wake up? What I Find strange is it shuts down Vipers wake up just as bad. If you put enough mix ups in it you can really mind fak them and get some good damage in. I like using this againts noobs.

I was also testing it againts Cammy, during test it seems to work well as a meaty when used a second time againts her Cannon Spike if you don’t move on the second sweep but online for some reason im always hit but usually it’s suppose to trip her on wake up if she does it. Other things i’ve been testing is EX Izuna throwing Hondas Sumo Headbutt recovery. I wanted to give Hondas a reason not to abuse it but it’s…difficult, takes good timing but on recovery he’s considered in the air so.

I use cr.mk against all people on there wake up to test what kind of player they are. (IE: Wake up reversals and what not) I have literally hit people 3 times as they are getting up till they decide to block lol. It also makes them think later in the match and you can test them at any time. (except if they have ultra meter

Yeah when discovering this I learned the hard way when I pushed a little too far. But I created some simple mix up games againts it with the elbow drop. I was just suprised it shut C.Viper down a bit. Characters like these like the wake up with something all the time. It’s not full proof but like you said you can use it to test them and see how far you can push them. I guess some folks though don’t know how to react to so they may try the same move three times because they don’t know the match up, then they may finally block.

It destroys Vega on wakeup too, with balrog I like to use cr.mk late so it only hits once, then if he tries to turn around punch or ex dash punch you can get a free ultra 2 (buffer the motion with cr.mk and press PPP on reaction), if it’s an ex punch you get full U2 damage plus the grey damage from his armour.
You can do the same to vipers EX seismo.

dont play Guy much anymore :frowning: …but still enjoy using him ocassionaly
does anyone else use ninja sickle to blow up crouch tech on enemy wake up? seems to work as well as cr.mk, except it can lead to ALOT more damage
time it right and it eats reversals alive…if ur a little less than mid screen, it can lead to close to 600 damage punish…ninja sickle to EX hozanto FADC U1 …just curious if anyone else uses it?

also, does anyone use the ninja sickle corner reset? where u use cr.hk after a sickle to reset them, then mix em up and either dash under or stay the same side? K1 taught me that one back in the day

does anyone use these prehistoric techniques anymore? lol

i don’t pay much attention to tier lists because skill > tier lists, but i looked at IPW’s tier list for this month…i think they’re still overlooking guy… he’s about 8th or 9th from the bottom.

Super Street Fighter 4 Tier List - January2011 - iPLAYWINNER - FIGHTING GAME NEWS STRATEGY & MEDIA

having guy as C tier seems like it’s an improvement. I really don’t think they’re underestimating him. He has many flaws and shit defense in ssf4. A lot of other rushdown characters can do what he does but better and safer. He needs meter to compete. U1 might be the worst ultra in the game, or at the very least it’s definitely one of the worst. U2 is good but lacks range which means you can’t punish some things on block.

Not trying to sound negative here but when you compare him to other characters you will realize that he’s lacking. A decent amount of his issues are fixed at least in AE so he will definitely be mid tier at minimum.

Don’t forget that there are very few guy players out there which means he gets away with some things that he shouldn’t. I’ve seen this on streams. If you’re happy with how guy is then it shouldn’t matter what tier lists say but I personally think they’re accurate in that front.

Eh,all my optimism with SSFIV Guy went out the window 3 months ago.His place on the tier list now is correct,he is only just above Dan,Gen,Makoto etc. Some of the matchups are wrong,IMO he has 6-4s where he shouldnt. But still he is bad in this game.

What saddens me is that he is only bad because of bullshit, not because of character design.Someone like Cody is bad on wakeup because thats part of his character design, and he excels in all other areas except walk speed.Guy is mainly bad because of a glitch (TC whiffing) which is something that isnt part of character design. His lack of an abusable poke was his second biggest flaw,St.mk is good but the recovery is so bad people can level 2 focus it.

I’m really happy with Arcade Edition but I really get annoyed playing Guy how he is now.

man, playing when you’re salty is all bad.

better stop now and just watch the replays later and see what kind of stupid stuff i do when i’m mad

I’ve been playing around some more with Run > Slide follow ups. isn’t as effective as I hoped it would be against Balrog. Due to Balrog’s wake up animation, Guy won’t be close enough to get a cl.MP after the whiffed overhead. I’ll put a video sometime later showing a setup that does leave Guy in range.

beginning to REALLY hate the bison matchup. I should start studying my own replays… probably something i dont do enough of.

bison is always fun to play, if you want we can practice again lol. but i’m sure there are better bisons on your friends list.

i could always use the practice haha. just hit me up!

I recently watched/saved a replay of you seriously train wrecking a Bison on PSN Obey, you’re the man! haha XD. Maybe you should watch that one again!

lol really? i’d like to watch that one again. add me on psn if you can

Absolutely, my PSN id is Bushinryuken. I’ll add you right now and show it to you when you are on. It was some inspiring shit man! Me and DopeUyuu were like “hur hur we wish we could be as good as him hur hur” XD.

I play against a very good bison from time to time. It’s hard to deal with pressure. I feel I have to block most of the time or use ex tatsu and try to turn the pressure around. Match up should be much easier in AE so it’s okay.

Just on a really random note here, did anyone else feel a bit surprised by how weak Valle’s/Combofiend’s punishes were yesterday?

I felt like they both lost some games with Guy simply because they did a weak punish.

There was one game where Valle simply just did a forward throw on a whiffed Ibuki kick reversal (At least I believe that’s what it was) instead of doing a bushin chain combo or something else damaging. I noticed this a few times because they both had games where it came down to the wire and they would have won had they done more damaging combos.

Anyone else notice this?

Valle and Combo need to take more time with Guy than they currently did imo.

Combofiend has been putting time into Makoto, its no surprise his guy wasnt on point.Same thing for Valle.

I respect Combos decision to main Makoto, but I think in the long run he would have gotten better with Guy.Guy teaches you to get in your opponents head and when you do,you deal big damage.
