Ken General Thread: Go with the Flow

You are not the only one. I’ve had HK tatsu whiff randomly sometimes as well. It’s annoying.

Easy fix to that would be to just increase the size of the hitbox on the first hit, but I dunno if they’re gonna bother.

Yeah I’ve had that happen a lot, you can kind of see when your RH.Tatsu will drop off and change into a fierce Shoryuken if you think it’ll whiff, that’s the only remedy.

I’m done with the beta now anyway, great impressions and honestly I feel Ken is doing quite well for himself despite popular opinion. He definitely could use a boost, but he isn’t garbage by a longshot. Managed to get 2.5K LP despite the copious amounts of rage quitters around the 2K/3K LP mark. Hope everyone enjoyed it, I can happily wait for release now.

I can tell they changed the push back off c.MP again. It’s halfway in between Beta 2 and Beta 3. It’s easier to get the target combo, but HK tatsu occasionally whiffs.

Nice. I maxed out at about 1.6K LP; started experimenting with other characters by that point…ended at about 1.3K but learned that Rashid is a potential sub.

Look forward to training with you all. Even if I get bodied the majority of the time.

I wonder what changes Ken’s gonna get in the final build though…

I really dislike the chun matchup, I feel like she can pretty much do what she wants

if HK tatsu don’t work no more, use HP shoryu instead
the only instance I actually go for HK tatsu now, is when i read a jump of some sort, or to jump up fire balls
people still don’t punish it very well

and on top of that, in V trigger ,that move is definitely safer on block
and if it hit confirms, you can end it with a shoryu, or go for a reset

Use MK Tatsu; little less damage, way better pressure afterwards

The advantage of the HK Tatsu is that it leaves you in a position to actually pressure the opponent. HP SRK kills all pressure you have.

And HK Tatsu usually connects, but if you start the combo from where the b.MP barely hits then the HK Tatsu can whiff.

Ken is solid…but definitely could use a boost. In the Lab with Karin and chun and OMG their normals are just too yummy. I’m c.mp and dashing with Ken all day. Maybe make his step kick safer on block and his run you can cancel out of sooner if his normals are all going to be this average and short. Damage wise though, he’s a monster, and if we all can get 3/4 of what Momo was doing, we’ll be A-OK.

In the 3500-4500K range, some really really nice players. Even when I lost though, always could see where I faltered. Really liking SFV, just wish the game was slightly faster.

Do you know Dr. Claw was using Vega since Vanilla and was stronger than Zeus for most of SF4’s history yet the general public didn’t know him until he “chose” to let them see some of his stuff? Do you notice how even though Dr. Claw is still stronger than most players out there you don’t see him offline? Not everyone who is stronger than the players you are allowed to see plays offline.

Do you see HD Millz or TheKraken going offline to test their strength? What happened to Native Impact? The logic that says “if you are strong than you will automatically beat everyone and be known to the public and life choices magically disappear” is flawed logic. I don’t have any reason to lie about my claims. Whoever is a mature and reasonable person will take my offer to challenge my claims over a call where we can get from behind the keyboard and speak verbally. If I’m lying I won’t have adequate proof and my voice will be shaky when put on the spot. The sad thing is my haters endlessly demand i fight them in game but dodge my higher quest to speak verbally.

I’m literally putting myself on the spot much more than a silly fight yet they don’t take my offer to talk because the talk will require painful thinking which is something they love to avoid while acting tough challenging me to a fight. For some reason they don’t understand that interrogation is more pressure than an online set for me. If we went about resolving real life conflict the way these brutes do in SF4 humans wouldn’t exist because we didn’t use our higher human brains to work out differences.

By the way, mathematically there is a very high chance that I’m one out of 100,000 players who is as strong as I claim to be but haven’t made a choice to show it in tournaments. If the logic you are using says out of 100,000 players “it is impossible that one of them can be telling the truth about something I can’t believe” then you don’t give any credit to probability or reason. Some how you forgot there is something called sandbagging which is what Ryu does himself. Somehow you don’t consider I may be so strong I don’t even use 50% of my power most of the time which is why you think I’m weak based on matches found on my channel.

You are just used to Alex Valle type of players who fight with their heart and show everything on their sleeve. You totally disregard the idea that a human being can become just as strong as Alex using his mind. There doesn’t seem to be two opposite sides of the coin here. It is my not fault you only know of one way to get strong and purposely chose as an adult to close your mind to any other way. I’m the most innovative Ryu in SF4. One day I hope you understand all of the Ryus on your channel including yourself have been using my tech for years thinking you got it from each other while I sat back quietly smiling as I got spit on by those who are supposed to be on my side. I smiled because in the end you are using my tech without even knowing it and saying I’m weak. That is very ironic and sad.

I’m the person to told xWAx Solid about cr.MP (counter-hit) U2 combo after my first three days of playing with him during Oct. 2011. I knew about that six months before him which sadden me. I thought an A+ was going to know about that tech since it was out for so long. I told him about it as a thank you for allowing me to train versus him as my first A+ Ryu friend. From that point onward he became the #1 Ryu to copy me. By promoting him you’ve promoted me without even knowing it. That is why I don’t even have to get upset with these attacks. You’ve already proven you appreciate my skill by using my tech and promoting others who use it as strong.

The reason why I’m typing a lot and keep coming back is because I’m here to help this scene improve. It is nothing to help those who willingly and easily work with me. The greatest reward comes from when I manage to create a positive win-win with someone who sees me as you do Liang. If you ever come to understand the things I’m been saying and how I am not lying we are gong to be great allies! The first thing to do is notice how in the video below Ryu could block. He doesn’t even flinch with normal human instincts to avoid pain. Notice after he gets beat up a lot he doesn’t ever feel a need to retaliate until “he chooses” to attack for “his reasons.” No amount of toxicity will make someone like that react. Lastly, notice how Seth believe in what you believe. He sees Ryu as you see me!

In the end, notice how much extra power beyond Seth’s comprehension was reserved for a “training experiment” such as the types I conduct when I do what the Art of War states and “appear weak when I’m strong.” Ryu literally allowed himself to take the trolls and the hate from the FGC until he found his own reason to test his training. The truly strong don’t have to go around showing everyone their strength. Those who do are mentally weak and allow pride to rule them. If I can control mind of the muscle bound their muscles can be used against them in a way that I myself don’t need to be as physically strong as them in order to win.

KAIZEN RYU (Personality) VS. LIANG SETH (Personality)

it sure feels good to see Julio play Ken like Ken in SFV

So I made it to rank 92 with Ken so probably amongst the top 5-10 Ken’s. Thought I would share some videos vs other top ranked players. My air ex.tatsu execution is still a bit wonky because I’m learning pad so sometimes you see a random standing ex.tatsu or an early jumping hk.

Me vs Alioune - never saw a Karin use ex dash to go through fireball before so that was a shame. I tilted after.

Me vs Mordesai - I found out that you can punish Vega’s sweep max range with TC, this is the result.

Me vs Cobalt - I wanted to show this because of the punish I found (0:36). Didn’t know about the TC combo punish against sweep yet. Was actually a pretty sloppy match because I was nervous, we just saw this guy beat Alioune in the replay channel so I wanted to beat him.

Me vs RickyTTT - that shoryu on his wakeup should have been a c.mp… pad problems

Me vs Lao-Tzu - V-trigger should have been s.lk xx ex.hado VT but I got a s.lk, o well. EX tatsu was suppose to be in the air.

Good stuff man was up there with Cammy but got stuck around 200 or so with Ken. Punishment game was way more on point then my own, good finds. I wonder if TC gets vega’s roll also. All his Roll’s except EX are -4 on block, I was punishing them with EX SRK but a meterless punish would be way nicer. That st. LK punish against his st. FP in particular was the one that surprised me.

Honestly after 2 days I think he is ok. His damage output is really good, but not wholly convinced he is super solid against some of the better normaled characters. Maybe having an optimized punish game will make that better. Luckily characters like Birdie and Karin have to play pretty honest or Ken can expose them for solid damage. Still would like b. MP to be like +1 on block and the pushback adjusted a bit on cr. MP on hit but with those 2 changes I think i’d be ok trying him out at launch for awhile. Also fix RH tatsu whiffing if I am a pixel outside of point blank, shit is annoying when you give me shit like cr. FP crossunders and I have to go for suboptimal combo’s because of hitboxes not working right. Also a lot of situations some characters can’t be EX SRK’d where other characters can which was kinda weird.

TC almost always whiffs vs his roll because of the pushback so I also went for shoryu punishes.

What I really like about Ken is that unlike all the other characters he never loses pressure. You can always get to them after knocking them down and I think thats really powerfull.

After a while I also found out how good v-skill is in neutral, its fast and they have to make a decision when you start running. I don’t care that its - on block ,Ken is all about getting in your opponents head imo. Also if you space it properly most characters (including Ken) can’t punish it without super because of the pushback.

Yeah in the corner i didn’t realize he probably has the best f. throw in the game. Seriously you can do almost anything you want but jump after it. Meaty overhead, meaty throw, meaty anything, sway throw bait, etc. Also all his combo’s into tatsu’s give him more pressure which is really good. f. Throw midscreen also gives you the option to do step-kick if you think they are not going to block, you can mix that up with run-block and you safe but at negative frames, still a good range to be at. You can also do LP firebal->step kick and punish some neutral jumps and some fireball negating v-skills. Step kick is still punishable by some characters without super, but overall I agree if you can find a way to space it right it is more useful then I thought but I think that it also helps we are in an environment a lot of people aren’t blocking it at the second. You can also v-trigger cancel it into a combo which is legit.

Great video about the v-trigger. Show that I am a noob because I thought you could always punish it on block.

Glad to see a little more positivity in the Ken thread, it’s a miracle.

Talking about V-Skill, can it be safe on block when spaced? It felt great as a space closer and you could bait buttons by cancelling the run into cr.mp or st.lk. Your damage conversion gets really strong once you get V-Trigger too, you can cancel V-Skill on hit into Shoryuken - Super.

The only genuinely devastating weak point(Online) I felt was that his game revolves around very quick hit confirms and if your match is laggy then GG. Ken doesn’t seem to perform very well in laggy environments unless you just get lucky mashing.

How are u ever gonna land EX Tatsu into Super tho :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah I was abusing cr. MP->v-trigger on block it might be +1 which would make sense but definitely not +2 as you can’t do a cr. MP after it against a 3 frame normal from when I checked that out. Nice to see someone did all the normals. Getting his activation off seemed pretty critical to winning though having combo still seems ideal.

V-skill is -7 but can be safe if you are outside most peoples cr. MK distance, spacing is a bit strict but it can be done plus unless their meters are glowing don’t think they can get that strong of a punish.
