Ken General Thread: Go with the Flow

Oh you didn’t know that? You could do that since Beta 2. That’s why I’ve been saying Ken’s V-Trigger activation is really damn good because you can buffer buttons into it and if it hits you can get a full combo into pressure.

i find the lack of V-Trigger Tatsus pretty disturbing, am i only using it? so good damage and the crossup is hard to tell and passing every antiair

The dive kick is definitly not immune to air grabs, I got hit out of it by a Laura strong thingy (the one that act as her shoryu). Unless this is not counted as a grab.

Watching Momochi too, he actually makes Ken look quite good.

For me in my games, it was Bison that I could never beat. I have 0% win vs Bison. I have 100% against Zangief on the other hand, he seems quite bad too. For the others Karin, Birdie and Chun feel the hardest.

Edit : from momochi stream, damn you can V-trigger cancel the “step kick” into shoryu xx CA. I’ve never seen it before.

I think someone mentioned in between beta’s and I just forgot it as I’ve been focusing more on my Cammy. I remember we all talked about him doing it off normals after beta 2 didn’t remember which ones. I’m busy working, can he confirm it from a single hit of st. MK? That would be useful also. Started implementing it half way through yesterday and cr. MP made it so I almost never had v-trigger at the end of the round. Too many times fishing with fireballs or EX fireballs and I couldn’t get the confirm because the fireball didn’t combo.

st. MK is a really strong tool when you get them into the corner imo. It prevents neutral jumps, jump outs, has good range, and can be used when just holding that distance outside their range with a slight walk forward. Yeah that little sway is about half my game plan with Ken at the second. That is just a human weakness that is really easy to take advantage of right now.

Lol, Momochi just beat Poongko. I don’t know much japanese but I know he called him an idiot which was hilarious. Poongko had the round then after putting him self +2 with a hooligan slide decided that randomly spiral arrowing on block was the correct choice. If they knew it was Momochi they wouldn’t be testing his ability to anti-air so much, lol. He keeps having a hard time against Chun’s. Trying to out footsie Chun with Ken just is not a winning gameplan. Glad to know it isn’t just me that is annoyed about EX SRK whiffing sometimes on some characters. Shit is annoying man.

Fought a Karin by the name of goofball, was fun. Now I truly see why you’re saying Ken will struggle the most in neutral, though at least it doesn’t feel like an impossible task (thank you based buffer to EX Tatsu). Almost won but then near the end of round 2 he realized I kept messing up my anti-airs and took full advantage of that to sweep the win from under me, then proceeded to adapt to the rest of my game in the 3rd round. At least it wasn’t completely free.

It’s a good sign when I feel like I’m having fun winning or losing.

i agree i think Kens V-Trigger is the best one in the game so many options and such a good comeback factor

Ken got another minor buff, he can now V-Run cancel his back mp and target combo 1
he previously could not do this in betas 3 and below

I played the beta a bit, and I need some tips. Does Ken have any three light hit strings? I have a bad habit of going for three lights. What are people using as block strings and hit-confirms? I’ve been winging it. Still getting cr.LK xx s.LP xx Fierce DP into muscle memory. Also, what’s optimal right now? I’ve been pretty light on keeping up with this game so far. You can see my bad strings (and bad defense) here.

Not Ken related, but how does R. Mika’s V-Trigger work? Does it have a set time or does her partner come out manually? Do any particular frames of animation give hints to when or how she comes out?

Sorry if I’m asking for a bit much. I don’t have time to study games as I used to. Thanks in advance.

They nerfed all the 3 light strings to my knowledge.

Block strings are basically 2 lights, you can do 2 lights into shoryu if it hits. You can hit confirm your cr.mp into the TC1 (punch one) depending on your range.

cr.mp is probably one of the best button if not the best that Ken has.

R.Mika V-trigger come out semi manually from what I understand. She can either tap it and it comes out on the basic timing or she can hold it and it will delay it, after some point it will still go off, she can’t do it for too long.

Needs confirmation because I am pretty noob but this is what I understand.

Fierce srk into super is a super easy confirm

I didn’t include it in this video, but it’s very easy to link Super after the MK Tatsu.

Yeah he’s had that since beta 2. In the corner after an TC->LP DP if they quick rise you can get it also.

you can do cr. lp, st. lp, st. lk as your 3 hit lights for a hit confirm
only works up close

Damn, I wish I knew about this sooner.

Last hit of MK Tatsu gives you a nearly full juggle state which is why the crush counter combo I posted a few pages back works

c.HP (CC) > MK Tatsu (1-hit) > EX Tatsu

in V-Trigger

c.HP (CC) > MK Tatsu (1-hit) > LP DP > EX DP

Whats the best option to CC a jump in attack? I see Ryu’s doing st.HK CC into DP as an anti air. Can ken do anything similar? maybe st.HP or cr.HP into something?
Or is Ryu’s st.hk just really good?

Unfortunately I don’t think Ken really has any good options here. Cr.hp loses its crush counter property during the frames that it anti-airs, and none of his other crush counter normals really work as anti-airs. Maybe a st.hp on a really good read but at that point you might as well just DP them.

You can do a lot more than that with cross up MK Tatsu, cr.hp CC’s lead to some tricky stuff with it, same for air EX Tatsu and VTC combos

Anyone else feel that RH tatsu isn’t reliable in some situations. I swear 30% of the time i’ve hit the TC the RH tatsu whiffed and about 60% of the time after a crossunder from cr. FP -> run. Shit is dumb. His nerfed hitboxes to stop combo’s have made combo’s inconsistent in so many situation that is frankly is stupid.
