Ken General Thread: Go with the Flow

Has someone tried to cancel his run into a kara special? (ex: MP + MK xx DP + MK ~ MP)

doubt you can it has a minimum delay on it.

Are you talking about the delay on when you can cancel the run? I was referring to kara canceling the normal that would be canceled out of the run after the delay.

Don’t think anyone has tried but none of his normals give good kara-range from what people have tested so even if you could don’t know if it would be worth it.

It would let you cancel his run into specials.

Edit: Just saw the video showing that he might be able to cancel into specials, I must of missed that as I was still thinking he couldn’t.

Link? I’ve only seen momochi do s.hp into run, never seen anybody do the b.mp+s.hp TC into run.

What are kens good pokes?o. All of his fast/safe pokes have bad range and all of his long range pokes have bad startup/unsafe on block.

Never had st. RH punished when I used it, but basically cr. MK, st. RH, and cr. RH seem to be his pokes. Everyone’s sweep is punishable so there is this weird rock-paper-scissors in footsies right now where if you use sweep you can hit people trying to whiff punish you, but if they block you get sweeped or worse back. st. RH seems like his go to because the counter-hit is so rewarding and even though cr. MK isn’t very long range it still isn’t a terrible poke.

Its not a good idea to use moves that are unsafe/have long startup as a poke. I dont like how you need to walk further into the opponents poke range if you want cr.mk to connect.

Eh, you’ll just have to play to see what I mean. Everyone right now has this huge range they can be swept but all other normals will whiff. Not just shoto’s. It isn’t something you are going to do often, but on the rare occasion when you see someone trying to whiff punish you it isn’t the worst idea in the world. Especially if you can space it so their sweep back will whiff. Kinda like 3S Ken’s sweep that was punishable, but if you spaced it right you were safe to everything except some supers.

Your complaint was

this is just universally a thing with everyone right now except maybe Chun st. MK, but even that will lose to sweep. Sweep isn’t slow, it’s about the same as cr. MK. The recovery is just shit. Makes sweep range fireball pretty decent also, because people have to stand at this odd range outside cr. RH range to actually be safe and you can prevent them from moving in with fireball. Basic shoto footsie stuff, but that’s just my opinion so far.

Response to your edit:

This is exactly why footsies are weird for just about every character in the game right now. You have to stand where you can get hit to threaten a safe poke. Ken isn’t the only one that has this issue. It is making footsies feel super guess oriented compared to previous games for me right now. The space to be safe from sweep, but to threaten a safe normal doesn’t really appear to exist with how things are now.

Now that i think about it , i think that, maybe we are thinking too much with SF4 mindsets
it was fucking shit in 3S as well

fine would be a severe understatement there my nigger

Dammit, when is the beta going to come with Ken in it. I just need to play him for 10 hours already.

Hopefully the next actual planned Beta will have Ken in it… and Necalli and/or Vega. I really want to play as him, but damn I don’t want to only play against him in the online matches.

V-trigger activation looks like it now zooms in, looks really good. Build just looks graphically better in general really.
Second vid, Ken’s step kick does look pretty fast and certainly useful from max range. Ken’s V-trigger does seem like the closest thing to FADC as well. Just can’t use it to safely DP on block like SF4. But it looks it cancels from a lot of stuff. Cammy was punishing Ken’s C.mk+FB though, unghh…what is up with recovery on that thing lol!

Legacy of E.Ryu.

Having played both it is WAY worse than e. ryu’s in SF4.

That’s SF5, block advantage is worse on all specials. You can space a fireball out though.

You also get the VT every round for getting hit.

Heck, as long as there is a space where it’s safe, I’ll find it. Capcom doesn’t want people just mindless pressing c.mk+fb anymore I guess. I’m cool with that.

^^^ This, in plenty of iterations of SF a poorly spaced Cr.mk fb is punishable, but when properly spaced is pretty difficult to punish. Hell even in sf5 plenty of low forward fbs haven’t been punished

Just pick your spots and you’ll be fine

Very nice looking block and hit effects, think they’re new. Glad to see they brushed up the graphics some more.
