I’ve seen it used pretty safely against most characters but it has nowhere near the hitbox of SF4 Ken’s step kick, his leg extends less than Ken’s and it looks average ranged.
Yeah, it doesn’t have the range but it still looks better than Ken’s MK-RH target combo that whiffs on crouching opponents. What is even the point of that move? AA? Max damage punish?
In that stream none of those Ken players watch momochis Vids apparently. There weren’t using his vtrigger or run very well. And off counter hit RH u can run and jab into big damage.
Starting to feel like ryu may have better fundamentals though. Ken was getting stuffed by all of charlies normals. And what exactly is his safe on block pokes? His ranges are so short, i don’t want to always play in the opponents face. Step kick looks really unsafe unless max spaced. Target combo fb doesn’t look safe on block. I hope Ken isn’t too offensive. If the run is his whole game, we should be able to cancel it sooner imo.
Need to get my hands in it, but ryu is looking more solid atm.
The run needs a minimum delay or else he would have an infinite so i don’t see it becoming better. Pretty sure we are going to just have to live with its primary uses being whiff punishes and st. RH confirms.
I don’t mind the step kick being punishable stuff personally as I played Ken in 3S not SF4. He isn’t going to be the god of footsies like he was in SF4 where he beat 90% of the cast utterly in the footsie game, but more like SF3 where he is average to above average with it but his advantage is he can turn all his pokes into stuff. Until people are confirming correctly it’s hard to say how comparable he is to the rest of the cast.
Being in someones face is really good in this version of the game because damage is so high and reversals are so weak. Ken’s run will let him stay in people’s faces more. Ken can footsie with Charlie because Charlies footsie pokes don’t lead to knockdowns or damage whereas Kens do. Also if Ken corners Charlie he has to expend v-trigger meter or he is going to die.
Ken isn’t a character who is as easy to use as Ryu / Charlie so people need some lab time to figure his stuff comparatively so they’ll shine brighter on day 1 stuff. Ryu might end up better just because of safety / damage whereas only real advantage Ken has is that he can stay in after a knockdown whereas if you tech Ryu won’t be able to dash in without being at negative frames. Shoto cr. MK in this game is pretty bleh for both characters so Ken might actually end up with better footsies because of st. RH whereas Ryu really doesn’t have any other options that are safe. Both Shotos can literally get supered by anyone in the game if they block a sweep currently which is kinda dumb.
Honestly the only thing i’m worried about Ken is just how unsafe his fireball is on block (it’s seriously sweep punishable) and if they add characters with god like normals shotos are going to have a hard time in the neutral which is pretty atypical. I mean Ken has never been about fireballs, but he’s always had the sweep range fireball option if you make that punishable on block that is going to make him very much not play the normal shoto footsie game.
yeah, I guess if they just give us a little more breathing room with sweeps and push back on the FB, ken can play a bit better footsie. At least make his V-trigger FB game pushback a little better. Love the animations and stuff, but definitely think both Ryu and Ken have way too much frames on there sweeps.
Also looks like you can confirm off of lights with Ken, so I think dash/run mix-ups will be vital to getting in. And your right, one mistake, and Ken can really eat a ton of life off you. Momochi did counter hit RH+V-trigger+st.lp+target combo+lk.tatsu+Ex Srk
Oh and max range step kick is actually a good poke. It comes out pretty fast, 0:12 looks like you only have to take one step. I wonder if you can still frame trap off it with Srk when up close? Whoa, looks like you get a lot of time to confirm off counter hit too @ 0:52. Ken links a st.HP after his V-trigger dash in from RH. That’s pretty strong.
Hmmm is X-up MK + St.HP + V-skill + Jab a block string?
Step kick was not all that useful in 3s (like it was a piss poor normal.)
But that was literally his only flaw IMO. Ken in 3S shines by being in threatening spaces. Forward dash is so fast that being in low forward range meant that you could surprise your opponent with a f dash throw, frame trap setup, UOH, or continued pressure for corner push. Also f.hk was good to surprise opponents as well. He had good walk speed so footsies were fun. To me it seems like he’ll play very similarly to his 3s self+ he’ll have that run pressure.
In sf5 he has way more hit confirms/link though In comparison to sf3 so that is a big plus. I have no concerns for playing Ken at this moment.
Whats up with his Heat Rush V-Trigger that its 3 bars ? can anyone justify any legit reason ? I know it improves the trajectory and no. of hits ,
but still
