Ken G'eneral Discussion Thread (Frame Data, Techniques, Combos, and etc.)

I’m positive Ken has a great focus that was changed. He does this ridiculous twirl kick for no reason when the first probably mimicked sometime like Gouken’s. I swear I want to slap the character designer for Ken in this game, they ironed him out over the iterations, but the original design of him is just off…they don’t understand the character.

How do you do a kara fa?

hey what do you guys normally like to do after landing a full U1 mid screen. i just found out that the spacing sets up for a perfect fake thunder kick, karathrow. nobody sees it coming, and it is pretty much a half screen throw. it gets em every time for me and looks sexy.

Depending on the opponent, a full U1 gives you the perfect timing for a safe jump against ALL chatacters with 4 frame reversals or slower. So I normally do an immediate jump in RH then a delayed OS sweep for guarunteed continuity of pressure.

What about hadouken FADC U2? Is it absurdly fast or am I doing it wrong? I manage to land a hadouken FADC srk for example, but the 2xQCF input for the ultra makes it really hard to do before the opponent can block again.

u2 should activate as focus DASH is ending, I actually do the qcfx2 motion during the focus cancel and it counts as dashing forward. Then I just hit all three kicks and bam, u2.

I tried just inputing the qcfx2 during focus but that didn’t make me dash out of the focus. How do you do it? Just do it very fast or you have to hold forward a little longer at any point?

It is just practice, you should do f,f, qc(f), qcf… is very easy when you learn, no timing issues like when you are cancel hadoken into U2 :P, just do the dash then qcfqcf, dash give you time to do that while animation is performing.

Just do whatever feels natural, I do it differently depending on which side I’m on too. So you just need to keep practicing like Akagami said and keep trying all the different ways to execute it.

It’s done really fast, the forwards in QCFx2 are done fast enough to be considered a dash input. Try holding focus and doing qcfx2 until you can dash consistently with no delay.

A little guide on how to do kens kara cancels, i don’t know why Mechinima changed the name, call of duty does that to people.

Spending my last 3 weeks with 2012 ken till sf vs TK ken is out. We asked for alot of buffs for ken. We got 1 but they took it from us. Stole some of our moves and priority. Had no safe moves until 2012. Had no way of stoping focus attacks with our 1 hitting normals. A lot of BS occurs in this game. Idk how many points I gain or lose. What do you guys think?

I think you might want to take some time off from SF4 and wait a little. Watch how some players use Ken in different ways. Perhaps find a friend who can give you tips while playing. Someone I was playing against showed me some of his replays against Joon. Joon looks like he’s mashing but he is baiting the hell out of his opponents and its working everytime.At safe distance Random LP SRK and Heel kick/ fake thunderkick spam pressures opponents. The fake thunder knee scares the crap out of opponents because they think you’re coming at them faster than you really are. Use it more and you will be surprised at the results you get (opponents standing, jumping, using an unsafe or slow reversal) Don’t become too predictable and…90% of XBL can’t block cross up ex tatsu, good thing LP SRK is free meter build :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree Ken is a very solid character, he doesn’t get some easy matches like Ryu but he also doesn’t have the same problems Ryu has with Dhalsim, Adon, and Fei Long as those are very hard match ups for Ryu. On top of that he shares some bad match ups with Ken most notably Guile.

I love how the Japanese still think Viper isn’t SSSS++++ tier.

Anyway, obviously since Ken’s sweep back to 8f it is impossible to link a standing jab now, correct? I feel like I’m getting trolled on the front page by someone saying it’s character specific. However I doubt frame data is frame data regardless of hit boxes.

Chachi posted about this a few weeks back. It still works on some characters he showed us a video of him doing it on Ibuki, makoto and sakura. Cody must be another character. Im guessing Dudley, Zangief and T Hawk might be others as well.

That’s weird, I can’t think of why that is. Any speculation?

It’s just when the st.lp hits on its 2nd active frame instead of the first which gives +8 frame advantage instead of +7.

Oh that’s really interesting. Well that’s good to know it’s still possible on a few characters.

I think you can do it against Bison (Dictator) too, if someone can try it…

I’ve been wondering about frames after FADC on block. So after any SRK it is -2? What about off of a regular FADC on block (not after srk)?
