Why? when i can just go to the ken/ryu threads in this section with the majority here ADMITTING Ryu is better than Ken? I made a post in jest concerning players bandwaggoning, And here you quote me poking fun at whatever buffs you think ryu is going to get. You made the comparison not me.
I’m going to retract my original post because I honestly do not feel like continuously argue with you on the subject. This statement you made here however is not unique to Ken. I go to Evil Ryu’s forums and people complain about how much better Ryu and Akuma are. I go to Ryu’s forums and people complain about how much better Akuma is and how Ken’s kara throw is better or his SRK range. I go to the Akuma forums and people complain about how much better Ryu is (active frames on normals etc). I go the Oni forums and people complain about how much better Ken is (kara throw, sweep, FADC on SRK, mixups) it’s never ending
This admitting one character is better than another is not unique here. Everyone does it with their main character.
But when you have people that do not main either character (a majority of the tier list thread for example which also includes top players) saying Ken is better than Ryu… then well, I don’t know what to tell you.
What do I think personally?
If you main Akuma then Ryu is a good secondary. (Infiltration)
If you main Ken then Akuma is a good secondary. (Momochi)
If you main Ryu you should consider Akuma
The repetitive answer in the equation is always going to be Akuma, there is no reason to use Ken over Akuma or Ryu over Akuma, however if you main either Ryu or Ken, then Akuma has enough tools from both characters to fill in the holes.
It’s not as cut and dry as Ryu is better than Ken or Ken is better than Ryu. I mained both of these characters for sometime, actually I put more time into Ryu and will say that Ryu is a better character if you’re playing 100% footsies, but in this game, you’re not and that hasn’t been the case since Super. This game is filled with so much BS, vortex and randomness that you need to play a little dishonest to actually win.
Back on topic
So technically this should be an excellent option if you FADC an HP SRK without Ultra and still want to benefit from it. Good Stuff
Also I thought about the ForwThrow, FTK, nj.mp safejump. Turns out that doing it ‘manually’ grants very interesting results, see video below!
{old video}
So this seems to be safe to Ryus lp mp hp, Kens lp, all of Onis, all of Evil Ryus DPs. What this means is that Ken can only be hurt by Ryus ex and Kens hp DP. Akuma hits with every DP of his. That nasty little…! =)
The spacing for the step forward is PRECISELY 2/10. This causes the MP to wiff on Akuma, Makoto, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, Sagat, Cammy, DeeJay, Guy, Yang, Blanka, Boxer. Those need adjustments accordingly.
I didn’t know that this was possible before. I must apologize to all you guys who already know this stuff… Im just a newbie trying to learn Ken =)
//edit:
Reducing the spacing just a tiny fraction, every single DP is safe now - except Kens HP version.
Additional wiffs on Gen, Sakura, Cody, Fuerte, Vega, Rose using MP.
Use MK to only wiff against Sagat, Chun-Li, Cammy, Blanka.
Akuma bites the dust… Hah! x)
Akuma and Ryu just cover each others’ weaknesses well. Ryu does better against divekicks, Akuma has better odds against the likes of Adon and Fei. Sadly both lose to Cammy : /
No clue as to what would even make for a good Ken secondary
Dunno why anyone would think Ryu is the better character in this game. Like Shinebox said, this is a mixup game, Ken and Akuma have good mixup games, while Ryu’s is poor. Ryu is also more reliant on standard fireballs, which this game basically shits on, while Akuma and Ken have other, less abused ways to put out hitboxes at a distance. Still, while Ken is clearly better, it’s not by a ton, and all three are viable and need a different playstyle. Then again, the grass is always greener on the other side. Whenever I switch I find myself missing something the other shotos can do but the current one can’t.
EDIT: Also, Ryu was relatively stronger early on when the mixup game was less emphasized and footsies were more. He also has a stronger playerbase, both in numbers and the level of top talent.
A good secondary for Ken in my opinion is either:
Fei Long
Gen
Yun
i personally also think Ibuki but she’s broken so she is a good secondary for any1 lol but ever since i started playing gen i’ve been bopping B±A+ seths, guiles, cammys and akumas
I converted myself, coming from Bison my main. He’s just fun, and not many play him (348737839 dp mashers online don’t count). Don’t think he does better in any of Bison’s bad matches except Guile.
I dont know why anyone would consider Ryu better either. I see a lot of discussion about Ken, but hear very few and see very few utilizing all of his kara tools. Its like having 10 extra moves, all very useful in their own way. I was getting kara tatsu off dp tradeups like crazy the other night, kara-doken- walk back- kara-doken is a great zoning strat, I chip killed someone out of karaland with a kara dash kara dp the other night, superman kara tatsu “hero copter”, downward kara tatsu aerial assault which is super easy to combo out of and even instant ultra, kara dp from standing jab when you get too far to save you from getting that annoying one hitter, basically being able to teleport across the screen with kara dash kara dash kara throw, crouching kara dp! if ur gokd enough are you fucking kidding me aaaaand we’re getting our sweep back lmao… when I play with Ryu he feels sooo boring. I know his fundamentals are great, but more options is priceless. And you are practicing plinking with every kara! Best character in the game. Maybe not on paper, but in my heart…
I can’t kara tatsu to save my life. Kara throws = instant rage. Ken was my secondary in Super, then I dropped him in 2012 (didn’t really play AE). I wish I was confident enough to use him in the Guile matchup though. I’m a Bison user myself. I used use him against Dee Jay too but I don’t find it that much of a problem with Bison anymore.
Also F Sakura! Some things whiffing cause of her hitbox.
kara tatsu might just be the coolest move in the game. When it comes down to the wire, and they have no life left, i look at my super bar and count the number of missiles i have. If you are stacked with bar its like an iron curtain, kara tatsu in with precision, ex srk fadc, whatever. yes, im a meter dumping whore…
@malcb mastering mr masters episode 4 covers karas bro might be able to help you there…and @kara kommando i did an article on cross counters website of why ryu is better than ken at high level
After much deliberation and wanting to pick up another character for USF4, I messed around with Dudley, Sakura, Yang and E. Ryu, but I’ve decided to pick up Ken and wanted to introduce myself in these forums.
I played Ken with Chun-Li in SFxTk, where he had a faster walk speed - so I’m looking forward to his quicker pace come USF4 time.
I’ve been hitting up the earlier postings for combos, safe jumps etc., for a couple weeks now and feeling pretty good.
Had a question regarding Ultra choices though:
Ken is actually worse than Juri when it comes to comboing into Ultras as he seems to have very few options.
I like U1 and the only way I land it is with Lp Srk FADC U1 or after focus crumples and telegraphed/baited jump-ins (ex tatsu cross up into Ultra is too risky of a setup, but I can do it)
Are there any better options/advantages with U2? I don’t see it used much at all.
You don’t need meter and it’s freakin’ sick if you can do stand jab > U2 or close medium kick > U2.
U2 shut’s down some fireballs and is useful against Akuma’s air fireball.
It’s a good option select against teleports.
It’s a good reversal against a blocked EX-Greenhand or a bad Condor Dive.
You can Kara Focus Dash Seth’s far fierce and U2 immediately after.
It kinda works when comboed into in footsies, I guess… but the first hit whiff’s too often that I had to use 'kinda.'
You lose a lot of positioning and no set-ups afterwards at the cost of all the above and more.
I’ll have to hit up some frame data to see what all I can punish, correct me if I’m looking at the wrong date but Ken’s U2 is 7 frames?
Chun-Li’s Hosenka is 6 frames so Ken should be able to punish pretty much the same things. Unless the horizontal movement is pinch slower or something.
This is why I use Chun-Li’s U1 in all match ups because of what it can punish as a blocked reversal or whiff.
I like pocketing her ultra in case of those scenarios, sounds like I may be able to do the same with Ken.
it takes a while to get used to combo-ing into U2… ive been at it for quite some time and im still kinda struggling with it. Sooooo good when u land ut though, great dmg and looks sweet. Ive been using it after conditioning them to expect a x-up, then ill hit them w an amb jumpin fierce>cr hp>hado>fadc>U2… or you can even throw some light attacks in b4 the cr hp to make the hit confirm easier. Also, when you are playing around next to their corpse, try meaty cl st mk or put it in a frame trap because it stands them up for a pretty easy confirm into cr mk>hado>fadc>U2… or like he was sayin get the counterhit right off of it. I dont think ive landed a single one of those, i cant train my brain to look to the side of the screen and scan for counterhit
Thanks Joutai and Kommando -
I’ll likely stick with U1 for the time being and on a side note with U1 is Lp SRK FADC ‘fake’ u1 character/timing specific?
I’ve had a few characters whiff oddly.
Currently studying up on Momochi’s Ken seeing how he tackles certain match ups, I’ve seen him use the Ex Hado FADC, u2, pretty sick looking.
As a habit from Chun and Juri I have a tendency to save my meter for Supers and I really like Ken’s.
personal fave was on a stunned opponent, J. Hp, Cr. Lp, Cr.Hp xx Hp Hadouken xx Super - that was sick.
I haven’t seen many combos using super for Ken anyone care to share his strongest combos into super?
Hopefully before long I’ll feel good enough to share some video for critiques, but most of my time is Lab practice right now.
