I don’t know, straight up lying about your sex and asking people to hand you money bluntly and impolitely just seemed like such a lowly act. Also, I’m kind of salty because I was the only one that put Kara on blast in that thread until Fishjie came in and he just got overwhelmed by all the white knights. Then again, I didn’t really expect anyone to take me seriously in that thread because I literally had trolled everyone in that thread at one point or another. 
While in real life I would consider a person such as Kara to be trash, this was just online and I didn’t even care he was scamming people, the people that got scammed dug their own hole, I just wanted an epic thread, not a bunch of AJs from WCG Ultimate Gamer.
I believe when you go through the process to have your name changed on your birth certificate, you can have your birth certificate’s sex changed as well, I’d assume that’s the sex Kara would put down on any forms she fills out.
And yeah, it’s normal to see sex and gender used interchangeably. Most people probably do not know there is a difference between the two unless they actually know someone whose sex and gender aren’t the same. People would just get confused if they started being asked for both sex and gender on forms they’re filling out.
