Karin Beginners Thread: Oh-hohohoho!

As far as I know there’s not much reason to do another tenko after a tenko launch as opposed to LK mujin. Additional tenko will barely do more damage and throw the opponent further away as opposed to LK mujin’s oki potential. Orochi afterwards makes more sense if you want something different because of the extra stun damage and corner carry.

(of course if you’re really big ballin’ you can do JFT -> LK mujin -> EX.JFT -> EX.JFOrochi lol)

…considering I’ve seen monsters like sakonoko and JWong attempt this repeatedly and always drop it, I think it’s safe to say that nobody here is “really big ballin”. x_x

How much damage is this compared to the meterless stuff, by the way?

How do you guys go about actually landing the cr.mp combo starter in a match? I have a hard time just getting that close for free. A lot of the times I find myself doing cr.mk to try and whiff punish.

Also what exactly are my options to keep my opponent under pressure when I score a knockdown? I feel like I’m letting people wake up for free

I’m at work but if I remember correctly jHK, s.HP, JFT, LK mujin, EX.JFT, EX.JFO does around 400 damage and more than 600 stun. Don’t have exact numbers on hand but if you’ve got a decent offense mounted already you can see how this is a massive punish

Thanks for posting this, I’m going to try this when I get home.

I’ve got several Karin punish combos on the reg now. JFT is sorted. Orochi…not quite yet.

One thing I can’t get consistent or find any sense for, is the timing from V-Trigger into St.HP. With combo strings I’ve noticed if you press when you hear the second part of a hit, it’s easy (most hits have a sort of ba-duum - press button on duum).

I’ve been hitting the gym hard with Karin and it seems like she is a high skill, low damage character. One cool thing at least, is I picked up Cammy just to mess around and noticed that all the work I’d done on comboing with Karin made her super easy to play (st.MP - st.HP - HK Spiral is a cinch to pull off and great damage).

I’m stubborn though, I think Karin may get a buff at some point too. If you ask me they should just make JFT a Light + Medium, she’s like a Killer Instinct/Tekken character as it is. Reminds me of pulling 10 hit combos with Yoshimitsu (except, that was much easier!)

I wondered this too. I was having a long session with my friend who plays Gief last night, and just never saw an opportunity to use it. Could just be the matchup, but I mostly use standing mk and such. Rarely close enough for cr.mp. Again could just be the matchup, but even when I played some ranked, I didn’t see so much opportunity for it.

I should probably work on combos from other normals lol

Best chances for it to actually hit from what I’ve played are after mixups using anti air s.HP or cr.HP then command dash for crossing under. Also the usual suspects of getting the opponent itching for a throw tech/overhead block then then boop.

What’s her general game plan in a match.

General game plan is to close the gap and get in to use your footsie game along with with her specials. Keep your opponent grounded, pressure as best you can.

Wait, is that JustFrame Orochi? Orochi has a JustFrame? I can’t find it on dantarion’s frameviewer, but I didn’t realize EX was different (though I guess that shoulda been obvious). I did manage to find Tenko, JFTenko, ExTenko, and then Orochi and ExOrochi though. Is it maybe just the Ex, or am I actually missing something I totally can’t pull off. (How can you tell if you succeed at it, so I can practice?)

There is no such thing as justframe orochi. It’s just the fastest possible orochi.

You will know the difference in her voice, (Right there) =Regular (Hiya) = Quick Input.

It’s like those moves Jin Kazuya and H-rang have with those extra properties except there’s not a flare of fire showing the difference.

To test if you really have it down by comboing it from a light punch or light Kick, because they can only combo to quick input tenko

No it’s impossible to combo lights into orochi without a counter-hit. There’s no such thing as justframe orochi and she doesn’t say something different either while doing orochis.

The key differences between justframe tenko and “justframe” orochi is that doing the justframe tenko actually reduces its startup considerably AND gives it special properties, as it does more damage and stun if done justframe. The justframe is always 6f startup while the non-justframe can’t come out faster than 9f.

Orochi on the other hand have no such properties, fastest possible orochi is 11f startup but has no sweetspot in its startup that actually does something.

If you want to practice doing perfect orochis, as fast as possible orochis, try comboing from jf tenko into orochi.

Thanks.

I gotta ask now though. She has two followups from Rassenha: Senha Kusabi (2K) and Senha Resshu (8K). What’s the difference? Crouch blocking will stop both, blocking the sweep and ducking under the headgrab. When I am I supposed to use one instead of the other?

If you hit the ressen you can confirm it into the sweep (2K). On block you shouldn’t be doing either of them since both are destroyed by just crouchblocking afterwards and are highly punishable by competent players.

Fair enough, but then when should I ever Senha Resshu (8K)? What does it have that Senha Kusabi (2K) doesn’t?

Pretty much only for grapplers that try to grab u in between. Kusabi can be grabbed out of but Resshu is airborne so it’ll beat it

@Kattchips right changed to tenko.

@Aquakarin if you find yourself getting blocked/whiffed rasenhas I just do it and go for a regular grab.

Ok, but then I have the opposite problem. Why ever use Senha Kusabi? Why not Resshu every time?

Not a bad idea. I’ll have to try to get that into my reactions.
