as i read it on the bradygames strategy guide, it says that the kara throw for ryu is -> + MP, which is his overhead, and should be done just outside of his throw range…on the xbox version, i can never get this to work…
how much of the overhead animation is seen before it cancels and the throw is executed?
how quickly should the pressing of the buttons be done?
is the only way to do this to put one finger on MP, and the other two on LP+LK? if it is, then i’m using a controller, so maybe i should be getting my joystick first before i have success doing this…
Thats the right move to use. But I can’t tell you how to do it consistenly. Akuma has the same kara throw, only his is much more noticable. If you do it right he will grunt with the grab.
i cant do it either and im playing on dc WTFFF i know youre suppose to just get the forawrd motion off the fwd+mp and then throw but i can never get it www.combovideos.com has a 3s section from shenmue the game and it brakes down the kara throws per frame check it out if its bother you that much and repost if you find how to do it!!
if i remember correctly it was 2 or 3 frames of animation before you have to get throw in that video is worth it
3s section and there should be a 3s tutorial its quite large and it has a shenmue in the begining of the video
i just watched that video a few minutes ago, and it’s pretty helpful…the kara throw doesn’t seem like something i’d be able to pull off with a controller though…i’ll just wait till my joystick comes in…
kara throws dont show any of the hit animation… as far as i could ever tell
if anything you just see them *slide or you might see the top of ryu’s elbow for a split second, just long enough to think back and say… did i see him do the overhead?
the way i do it on the arcade is to press all the buttons at the same time. so u need to press f. mp + lp + lk. although im used to throw this way with ryu i dont find it that useful as Q’s, elena’s or even Alex’s karathrow (even though i dont play elena).
“kara” means empty. it means you execute a normal move and then cancel it with a special move so quickly that the normal move doesn’t even come out. in 3S, throws are special moves, so they can be kara-cancelled from a normal move.
the strategy guide does not say that Ryu’s MP overhead is his kara-throw, it says that it is his best one. why? because the whole point of kara-throwing is to add range to your throw. you want to pick a move that moves your fighter forward, then as the fighter is moving forward but before the attack actually animates, you execute the special move. this is slightly slower than a normal throw but has much more range. (don’t do it when you are close enough to connect a normal throw)
forward + MP kara-cancelled does happen to be Ryu’s best kara-throw imo, because it adds hellified range to the throw and is relatively easy to do. if you ever want to be more than just “good” if you ever want to be “great” with ryu then you MUST master his kara-throw. it is the weapon the makes him deadlier than ken at close range.
anyway, as far as execution, it you must be VERY fast. start the original technique, allow Ryu to be moved forward, but do NOT allow the punch to actually start. you must have musashi-like timing!
my secret: negative input. hold the 3 buttons, overhead with medium punch, release LP & LK. viola! :karate:
i was responding to everyone in general, didn’t mean to skip your question. no, there is no signal. akuma grunts? never has when i do it, but then i don’t allow any frames of animation other than the move forward, and i don’t have the best hearing in the world. btw, have you used akuma’s kara into his grab super? damn that is mean as hell! (i am not a fan of akuma, but a friend of mine uses him very, very well, and he hit me with that damn move more than once.)
i cant kara myself because i dont know if im doing it right i read on the forums that akuma grunts for his kara because of the grunt during his overhead
also what would be the best distance for a kara throw about a c.lk distance??
Akuma’s generally the best to teach yourself to kara-throw with, because he makes a very noticeable sound effect right before the throw connects. You’ll know you did it right because he does the overhead toward+mp grunt, even though a throw came out instead. Q is also good (for me), because he moves so far forward that you can definitely tell if you screwed it up or not.
You have to do it really quickly, because you’re literally cancelling the first few frames of animation from the normal move into the throw. If you wait too long, the normal will come out and there’s no point. If you do it simultaneously, the throw will override the normal and you get nothing. It’s not quite instant, it’s a split-second later.
It takes a while to learn perfectly, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t do it right away. Hell, I don’t do it consistently with all characters and I’ve been playing forever. Just keep at it and pay attention to how far your character moves when you get it right. After a while you’ll definitely notice when you’ve got it down.
N - Thanks for watching. New video by the end of the month, promises.
soul surviver, kara thorwing gives you a very fast, unblockable, unparriable move from a much greater range than ryu’s normal throw. (although imo, his normal throw seems a bit faster, kara-throw has range). that being said, mix it up with your fast and slow high/low strikes, and you have a deadly mix-up game at close distance. combine that with ryu’s high priority moves and EX fireball and you are now powerful from all distances at varying speeds.
greensyo, if you are going to use ryu, why not think about training like he would? lock yourself away and do NOTHING but train on a single technique until it’s perfect. however long it takes, whatever trade-offs you have to make, just do it. the general rule of thumb is 10,000 reps for an easy technique. and guess what? kara-throwing is NOT easy! just have patience and focus. don’t do anything else for a long, long time. don’t get frustrated. just be determined, do it over and over until you can get it every single time.
the technique itself is not an easy thing to explain. as you have seen several people have several different ways of doing it. just practice and practice until you find one that works for you. you will fail and fail and fail, and then once you will get it right. eventually, it will happen again, and again. one day you will be able to do it at will.
practice so much that you dream about it. train more than you sleep, that kind of thing.
finally, don’t get caught up in discussions about frames, and equate low frames with speed. don’t forget that not all frames move the same speed anyway, and of course there is always hand-speed. most normal throws are 3 frames. what frame knowledge is really good for is knowing the timing on certain moves, ie that bastard that did a 720 super between the switch of chun li’s SA2, and in this case, the method of kara-throwing. you start the normal technique, allow ryu to move his feet forward, but do not allow him to actually start the punch.
