Jwong's random ultras demystified

D@LE60: EVO 2010

translation: jwong tried to U2 jaguar kicks by listening to the sound of sticks and buttons, gamerbee baits it twice with jab instead of kick.

this actually fits skisonic’s comment on playing sitting on the ground puts your ears closer to the opponent’s stick.

That’s honestly what you get for going for cheap stuff like that. Sorry, but I think listening to stick and button inputs is just low.

I could tell that he got baited. It’s just so crazy to see someone like Wong, who is usually so good that he can counter a move based on sight alone, go on tilt to the point where he’s grasping at straws trying to hear the click of the buttons. Did the same thing happen the first time, or did he just try to chip him out in round 1?

I don’t know why they didn’t have head-to-head setups to prevnt this stuff… they could easily do it.

It’s old school arcade tactics. If you played in the arcade, you did it. It’s not even something you try to do.

Even now, everyone does shit like that. Like if you react to fireballs, more than likely you don’t react to the fireball itself. You react to the dip the character does before. That’s why stuff like QCF+LK with Ryu is so good. He does the dip, then does a move that kinda looks like fireball start-up, and it baits jumps.

I know first hand though that Justin just has sick reactions.

If you look at this round, I fake a bunch of fireballs by doing QCF+LK. That’s a trick that worked on most players, and I’d gotten Justin with it some months before… but in that round he goes for zero fakes, and supers me the one time I actually throw one, since I had gotten comfortable since he hadn’t jumped on any of the fakes.

You guys need to stop hating so much, IMO.

Celebrate gamerbee’s win. He played well. Stop hating on the losses so much. A lot of people did really well at Evo this year. I don’t see why we can’t just focus on that. You all need to stop hating players that are way better than you are.

This is why head to head cabinets are superior.

I also think this kind of stuff is not really a part of the game, just a dirty tactic that is a throwback to the old american arcades where you were shoulder to shoulder.

It’s a legit tactic, stop complaining.

yeah no shit he was trying to use it as a reveral and not just doing it. Random Ultra = guessing reversal ultra. I don’t see why it needs an explaination when it is obvious.

haha, “cheap” – this is arcade 101 here guys. It’s similar to watching someone’s body movement in a real-life fight to react to their next move. It took two posts for this to become another random hate on Justin thread, even though IMO it’s obvious the OP is explaining the behavior objectively, not to say “LOL CHEAP JUSTIN GOT WHAT HE DESERVED”

From the blog there’s also another mystery solved…

“Who put Gamerbee into losers?”

According to the blog, he lost to RyRy’s Viper.

I don’t see anything wrong with listening, its the same thing as baiting. How many times do players do overzealous “loud” movements to bait an op into a punish? Nothing wrong with it all.

We all do it and watch for it. people are only whining about it because its Justin.

I love stuff like this, it just shows the sort of mind games that are going through players minds when up on that stage.

Yeah people really are over reacting to Jwongs early elimination. He was quite unlucky to get Gamerbee, this guy took out a lot of really big players - mostly because he’s a v.good player himself of course, but a big factor I think it’s safe to say is that noones really had much competitive experience against a high level Adon.

Really makes you wish more of the big players didn’t choose and stick to some of the lesser known newer characters

yeah gamer bee pulled a “sanford” this year however the main difference is the GAME HAS BEEN OUT 2+ MONTHS compared to him beating 2 japanese players who play a different version without the console characters in it. Not to mention Justin had access to the game for a longer period of time before most people. There is no excuse with character unfamiliarity in this situation.

Why is it an excuse? Does there really need to be one?

“He had an off day.”
“Gamerbee is just simply a better player.”
“He wasn’t feeling well.”
“He was drunk.”
“Someone spiked his Redbull.”
“The buttons on his stick broke.”

Choose one. You can make up anything for virtually any situation and speculate forever. He doesn’t need an excuse. He didn’t kill you’re mother, he lost a match. People are acting like his winning/losing defines why they play the game. Makes very little sense to me.

How is this a throwback to the old american arcades? I’m pretty sure Japanese have played shoulder to shoulder at one point on Sega Aero, Blast City’s, Astro City’s, etc. I’m sure theres many many more that I haven’t mentioned but those were the first few to come to mind. They didn’t always play head to head.

Exactly.

Some nobody from Gurnee, IL trying to break this shit down, and take shots. Fall back, man.

Remember when you use to actually have to be able to beat somebody, before you could talk shit about people? Those were the days.

Adon in the game doesn’t mean you can be well prepared for it since there is no high level Adon in the US that you can spar with.

I think daigo / tokido have a much better chance to beat gamer bee than jwong regardless of their own character choice just because gamerbee has been playing XBL with all the top japan players and they have better ideas of how to deal with his Adon.

Those haters that laughed on jwong regarding his adon is low-tier comment are pathetic.

Jwong didn’t lose to Adon because he’s arrogant, but because gamerbee is an amazing player (look at his safe jump optional select setup + amazing mix up games)

I’m not sure if anyone in the top 8 are prepared for a high level adon opponent. However, Mike Ross might did some research the night before, looking at his standing fierce counter to the jaguar kick.

Edit: Nevermind you mentioned Mike Ross

Why does JWong always look terrible in all the mid match shots I see of him? He needs to work on a more photogenic game face.

How can you say it’s cheap? It’s always been a part of the game. Besides, it’s not like the other player can’t do anything about it. Perfect example… this exact scenario where Gamerbee faked him out.
