I was cheering for my local Davis players. After that I didn’t care much, but I was leaning towards any of the West Coast guys. Once they were out and it was just JW and Daigo, I wanted JW to win, but I was torn. I didn’t think he would win, and he’s kind of a jerk from what I’ve seen. I understand I don’t know him and I have only seen some clips of him in videos, but he seems full of himself.
The Justin hate is entirely ridiculous, honestly. Like, yeah, I rooted against him in SF4, but I still wished him the best of luck in his matches, of course. Nothing wrong with that.
Outside of fighters, he’s still a really nice guy. I had the chance to sit with him post-E3. He was really respectful and I had a good convo with him on fighters and other games in general. He gave me a few tips and insights on SF4 as well.
There’s this old adage, where the higher up you go in terms of rank and popularity, the more haters you’ll end up having. It’s entirely true. So the hate’s going to be there, anyway. But to paint someone in such a negative light is entirely ridiculous.
Unless of course they blatantly make an ass out of themselves. Which Justin really hasn’t done, IMO. People can misconstrue anything as being cocky, anyway. I say, he’s hyping himself up to make it happen.
most people hating justin are just hating to hate. Most people rooting for diago are japanese fanboys. Say what you want, but its true, fery few people root for other players because of the way they play or their attitudes. Me? I root for myself. If it came down to those two, id root for justing tho. Why? Cause i meet him, hes a cool guy. So hes cocky, at least he has character. Diago is quite as hell, no expression, no hype.
I’ve heard of something like that before (although my memory is hazy), but was it literally his profession to go to arcades to play there? No one probably has the exact numbers, but it’d have to be something like at least 20k+ a year, meaning he did nothing but play VF all day like it was his job, to be considered something of a progamer. I seriously doubt Chibita did that, even in Japan. To my knowledge, Japan isn’t really much of an E-Sport country, so I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say he was ever a progamer.
After watching Justin talk about how Seth was the top character in SF4 I was really disappointed not to see him use Seth against Daigo. I know Sanford said he would use Seth if he got that far and I would have loved to see that matchup.
Some people like hype and some people think it’s an annoying distraction from the game. I think that’s where a lot of the hate comes from.
This post needs e-val. Mad e-val.
Well, Daigo wins. A lot. Of course he’ll have a lot of fans, and obviously a lot of them will be noobs and stupid. It’s simple. As soon as Justin defeats Daigo, there will probably be some Daigo hate and things will even out. You shouldn’t hate on players(unless they’re assholes I guess), but that’s how stupid people roll.
Also, my favor shifted(it was kinda “whoever” at first, being EU) towards Daigo when Justin kept trying to find an “anti Daigo” character while Daigo just kept going Ryu. I don’t have anything against counter-picking, but more than once in one match? Seemed a bit desperate.
I met JWong once at one of the major east coast arcades, and on first impression he was nice, didn’t make it obvious that he was a named player, clean, etc. etc. Nothing really to hate on.
He was playing at the MvC2 machine beating on random people who either didn’t know how to play that well or were complete noobs who picked random characters.
He seemed to be a person of composure… I didn’t say anything and just waited my turn to play and started gaming.
I didn’t understand where he would get the hate from until that day. Now, either it was the people watching or JWong just couldn’t take it, or some other reason, but when he gets hit by someone who can dish it out, it’s like he actually takes a blow to the face.
He would start getting aggressive with the equipment (near borderline slamming buttons) and try to “return the favor” and do exactly what you did to him back to him. Imagine if after the famous Soo vs Wong fight they rematched and instead Wong snapped Soo 5x in the corner… that’s the basic idea… this “returning the favor” progressed into annoyed mutterings and a scowling face.
Now let me get the point across that he won the majority of the games we played that day. From what I saw, Justin Wong is a great marvel player. And you have to be considerably skillful to try to “get back” at the other player. However, I was kind of shocked by how hurt he would get from playing with a stranger, even with no stakes at stake. He seems to me a person who could get emotional over the game fairly quickly, and so on hearing news that he left his seat to go serenade the crowd at SF4 I am not surprised.
Although personally, I think he is a cool guy since I learned a lot of stuff from him trying to “return the favor”
Except he said that in an interview once…
i met justin when he first came onto the scene. outside of it all hes a very very nice person and deserves nothing but the best. he is really cool guy and obviously excellent at games. he practices hard and it pays off. he is on top of the game right now because hes got the natural talent and he works hard at what he does which shows in the results. as far as anyone hating him, i would seriously take it as a compliment if i was justin. when you are on top everyone wants to see you fall. cheering for the underdog is usually the funner part of games. as far as so called “dick-riding” or any sorts, who gives 2 shits about what other people wanna do. you cheer for your friends, you cheer for a player who mains your character, or you cheer cause you just wanna fucking cheer. for those who dont know jwong personally and talk shit, f u, but cheering against him, there is nothing wrong with. learn to find the difference in the two. congrats on your success justin, props bro and keep it up!
^This to the fullest
I had first met jwong @evo 2k8 when stf4/TvC was being introduced to america and he hand picked me to particpate in the invite tvc after he seen me mash on alot of peepo on the machine. I had also met jwong @ E3 when he was mashing on everyone for the 300-0 record and the guy is MAD nice, a good d00d, straight up. I gave him a run for his money but obviously he was better than me, never rubbed it in my face, we chatted about random shit, shook my hand and i enjoyed playing with him.
I root against him ANY time he plays a westcoast player, just because i rep where im from, and i ALWAYS cheer for gootecks just because i main balrog and he teaches others how to win and play with rog unless he plays against a norcal player (norcal all day nigga). During the finals when justin was playing daigo i rooted for jwong just cuz i wanted to see him succeed, i wanted to see him truly be on top. Doesnt mean i dont like daigo, humble, great d00d, never any hate for the adversary.
Hatin on someone u dont know is fucking retarded, and any hating @ all usually means u hate someone for being on top and giving reasons like “hes cocky” to hate on someone. Believe it or not niggaz hate on micheal jordan, and i see it like how can u hate on this guy, do u know what he did for the game?, same way i feel about the jwong thing. Dont hate on someone u dont know.
What bothers me about the JWong hate stemming from EVO’09 is that a lot of folks can’t seem to look past their perception of the guy to admire the achievement of his game. Personally speaking, as someone who’s been intrenched in the scene since Alpha 2, all I’ve ever wanted is for the day to come when we could say that US play is equal to that of Japanese play.
Thanks to players like Justin, along with a slew of others, I think we’re pretty damn close to being able to say that. No matter what you think of the guy, you have to admit how impressive it was to see him push Daigo so hard and for so long. Not that I’m a Daigo hater, because the guy is absolutely brilliant, but I can’t really understand cheering for him over a US player on the EVO stage, outside of well, being a fanboy :razzy:
It wouldn’t matter if it were Justin, Ed Ma, Sanford, Ricky … any of the other guys in the top 8. I would have rooted for them all the same because all I wanted to see was for a US player to stand up to the beast and shut him down on our turf, the same way they wouldn’t want to see a US player take Tougeki.
Sometimes, watching Japanese players come to the US and walk away with our biggest title just gets old
Not to mention the fact that the smaller asian ones are just so much more comfortable. I tried to ride Sanford’s once, and it hurt to poo for a week. True story.
Great vid!!!
omg floE cancel
justin isn’t the one making the excuses.

LOOK AT DA DAMAGE
exactly.
Fanboys are weird but, if you want more people to be into the “scene” you are encouraging more fans over players. The bigger the scene gets the more fans you will see.
I am indifferent towards Jwong. I just don’t like him taunting in matches (although I do respect the psychological advantage it may give) as it reminds me of Bobby Flay standing on his cut board.
Watson has spoken! <3 when one of the three amigos speaks u listen fuckers.
This now turning into a love jwong thread <3. Wong is a good dude if you really hate him or have any sort of hate for him, then you’re just a hater or never met the guy.
I root against him, but I love him… does that make sense? o_O
Thanks for the love on the video guys.
Yo, to all the fans of my youtube page, I’m also uploading a high quality version of “Taylor swift - you belong to me” Yeaaaaaaaaaaa!
This thread fails.
People can root for who they want to root for.
Sure it’s not cool to hate on either Daigo or Justin. But who gives a shit if they hate either one of them.
I like them both.
There.
Here’s a few characteristics that you hold:
a) jealous that top japanese players (which just so happen to be the best) are getting the recognition they rightfully deserve
b) So full of pride for their country that they delude themselves when it comes to the reality, attempting to make themselves feel better by claiming Japanese top players are no big deal and that US is on their level (or even better)
This is a good reason why a lot of “Japanese dickriders” post that kind of stuff, because of statements like yours. So, to give you a reality check…
Yes, Justin got close and yes he played well. However, the crowd was very much against Daigo the entire time…extremely distracting, causing him to mess up key combos like f+HP into dp+HP(or crouch MP then dp+HP). These were combos that Daigo almost never ever misses…and what are teh consequences of missing them? Instead of Daigo doing the extra 15% at the end of his combos, he instead ends up taking a punish of 50% for missing. Missed combos being punished really played a big part of Wong’s comeback whether you like it or not. And yes, Wong missed some combos too but not nearly as much AND they weren’t misses that would lead to big punishes.
That said, they both played a solid footsie game throughout. In fact I was surprised at Wong’s footsies in that set.
Take your egos out of it and look at the reality people. Wong’s really good, but the Japanese are still on another level. When people post otherwise, this is when those so-called “dickriders” come out.
