Early reports say that the dino is a combination of T-Rex, raptor, snake and cuttlefish DNA. The last one means that it can change it’s skin color to blend in with the surroundings (think MGS4 Octo-Camo).
The Spinosaurus may have been interesting but to say that going back to the T-Rex being step down is completely inaccurate. Do a Media Vote on Most Popular Dinosaur in the Jurassic Park World and the T-Rex would still be #1 on the poll, and in the scientific world it would win by a landslide. So it’s popularity has not wained nor has the appearance of that “Super-Spinosaurus” in JP3 dwindled it’s heat. Factor in that JP3 happened over 10 years ago, which by now has already been more or less forgotten by most general viewers besides the most advent fans of the series.
Case being, T-Rex sells and is easily the most sellable Dinosaur by far. It has all the qualities of being a Super Predator and especially with the up to date Science on it. We know that it is even more deadlier then what the original Jurassic Park Series eluded too with the animal. The whole “If we don’t move it can’t see us” won’t work in the Jurassic World with T-Rex I can tell you that
Once again, this doesn’t make any sense here. Dinosaurs would be the #1 attraction in the world if they were able to bring them back. Their magnificence would never dwindle nor will their majesty falter in just a few years worth of time. How long have we had Zoos exist in this world? We go there to see the Tiger, Lion, Gorilla, Elephants, and how many times have we seen them in real life? Yet no matter how many times we watch them move with our own eyes, we’re still absolutely captivated.
Running by what you said above then the very Zoos we have today shoulv’e died out and became irrelevant because people would’ve become bored by watching the same animals that they’ve seen so many times over, yet we know this is absolutely not true at all. Their is something about an animal that is not only larger then us, but can kill us with ease that entices our very thoughts and minds. If the idea that the park became stale because it only had regular or real dinosaurs and not genetically altered ones being the real case for the storyline then my hopes for this movie would now drop by a few pegs more. Not to mention the writer or whoever should be fired if they felt this was the only way to make this movie refreshing.
As I explained earlier, the theme of JP was the misuse of scientific power by taking someone and then pushing it to the next step without thought or fear of the repercussions. You can’t simply have the old dinos since, by the time of JW, cloning them is 20 year old technology and the park itself has been running for a decade.
The only way that cloning alone would have been the “next step” is if the movie were some sort of reboot. Either they flat out remake the old film, or have a “new” story that simply just retreads the set up of the old one with the park being tested prior to opening.
That’s still not a good enough reason to be producing a Genetically Altered Super Terminator Dinosaur. The reasons why Jurassic Park was so fun to watch in the first place was Because they Acted like Real Animals. Not some Fantasy Enhanced Monster that illogically spends more time chasing humans as a food source then actual prey items. JP 1 was successful because the T-Rex, Velociraptors etc, had animal characteristics to themselves, and that we saw scenes in which the largest predator such as the T-Rex actually taking down other dinosaurs besides humans.
In JP 2 the fact that the Male and Female T-Rex were really just defending their territory because their infant was moved to a new location, and that they just accidentally stumbled upon the hunters later made it feel more realistic. All the while making it completely terrifying to watch all at the same time.
This brought upon a much more natural quality to the series that was severely missing in the JP 3 movie, in which the first two movies were able to produce both a naturalistic but also frighting combination. This is why I completely disagree on the assumption that the “next step” is to create Genetically altered Dinosaurs. Because if you start going down this path, then you pretty much shouldn’t even put real dinosaurs in the movie if the altered counterparts are going to be “superior”.
Were they in a space station, speaking in a British accent, wearing a monocle, cravat and a dickie, smoking a pipe, demanding billions of dollars, threatening to nuke the Earth?
One of the proposed scripts was cyber enhanced Deinonychus’.
This movie needs some dino vs dino battles. They’re so rare in the movies, for some reason. Show me a Triceratops and a Stegasaurus vs a T-Rex already!
My thoughts on it [details=Spoiler]It looks like a mix between a Giganotosaurus with some dromeosaur features combined…sigh, and I can’t tell if it has sickle claws on it’s foot either because it’s so blurry down at the bottom of it’s legs. Personally, if this indeed is an official leaked picture then they should’ve just opted to introduce a Giganotosaurus itself into the movie instead of a genetically altered one which looks like it. The skull alone is a dead give away it’s from the Carcharodontosaur family, and most likely a Giganotosaurus or a Carcharodontosaurus, but my moneys on the Giga simply because we have a solid skeletal frame of the animal.
I will say this, that this genetic alteration if true, looks decently okay, although I’m still against such things, however why the name D-Rex, when the judging from the picture it has no Rex like features.[/details]
So what then would be the “next step” of scientific power? How do you top being able to clone dinosaurs?
Because to me, creating your own dinosaur seems to be the logical answer, because:
It builds on the existing focus on genetics from the first movie.
It ties in to modern issues on GMOs.
It’s a move that is full of hubris, one that seems made by people drunk on their own power.
The 3rd one is the most important one, since it also ties in into how cloning the dinos in the first movie and book as illustrated an act of scientific hubris. Basically, cloning the dinosaurs in the original was shown as something that was, a bad idea in the end.
The thing is however, by the time of JW, cloning them is apparently no longer a bad idea considering how the park has been up and running successfully for 10 years now. Building on this then, creating their own original dinosaur is a next step that is born from their hubris of having run the park so successfully - hubris that prevents them from seeing it as a possible bad idea. To quote Ian Malcolm from the film once again “yeah, but your scientists were so pre-occupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
No one knows for certain, but scientists theorize that many predators developed arms like that due to evolving and not really needing to use said arms for anything. Many carnivorous dinosaurs had powerful legs for chasing down prey and powerful jaws to kill. With powerful legs and jaws, there wasn’t any need to develop arms to karate chop down prey or something.
