Then don’t make him the fucking son of DIO! Make him a new stand character entirely. Christ, he may as well have been an entirely new character with no relation to the rest of the series now. And for everything else they fought for too…it just seems so f’in abrupt and with minimal payoff, to just END like that. No closure episode to see them carrying on?
Maybe it’s standing out for you now, but it’s like that for most of the protagonist and lineage linking from one part to the next. In part 2 Joseph’s last name could have been Speedwagon and it wouldn’t have changed anything about the story or him being related to Johnathan. Similarly, Josuke being a joestar and illegitimate son of Joseph has 0 baring on the plot or the story progression. Yes, Gio is the son of Dio but that’s his tie to the Dio/Joestar bloodline.
But think about the beginning, the only reason Koichi was investigating Gio was to see if he was going to try to take over the world like his father Dio. Once it was confirmed that Gio was not like Dio there was no reason to continue that plotline. Also, as shown in his flashblack Gio’s perception of father figures isn’t exactly sterling, and you as the viewer don’t know what he does or doesn’t know about his father Dio. Like you said, he knows enough about him to know he died and to carry a picture of him around in his wallet. For all we know he wants to be a boss because it’s hereditary or because he knows his biological dad was a boss in his own right…
Also, if you rewatch episode 1 even Jotaru mentions that there is a powerful stand user in that area of Italy, foreshadowing Diavalo’s power and him being the focus.
Ok, so my favorite character so far is Von Stroheim. His ridiculous voice and cheesy German accent makes him 10x more hilarious, not sure if its intentional

No, Araki seemingly accidentally made him likable by being Battle Tendency’s best Speedwagon style exposition character. We can’t help that and he partially inspired a certain famous game character we all know so unless it causes you to sympathize with Nazis you are good.
If you do start to sympathize I recommend playing the modern Wolfenstein games and or watching Inglorious Bastards followed by the Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

Stands, Ripple and all the powers in general are crazy as fuck concepts. But they are probably the reason Araki has been able to do it for as long as he has been able to and not get bored since he can always switch things up.
