overall, I think the new anime is just okay. I wish there were more manga panel like interludes with sound effects and stuff. It’s mostly just alright because it’s not really doing anything interesting or new with it being in motion, in which case I have little reason to enjoy it over the manga. I might just be feeling that way because it’s only at part 1 currently (let’s be honest: JoJo is about fights, and part 1+2 didn’t really have the format down completely yet…). the art style seems a little weird too.
hopefully it’s successful and the other parts have more of a budget~
I like part 2 the most. Young Joseph is probably the most interesting Jojo followed by Jolyne. Hamon was a pretty cool and insanely varied power set. It’s a shame it’s practically forgotten in the parts afterward.
I don’t agree with this at all. hamon’s power set was very vague and because of that, it always felt strange when it would be utilized in these ways that didn’t seem to follow from the information that we’re given. it was just like a magic “can do anything” power.
that’s exactly why the transition to a stand power set (where stand powers are defined pretty clearly) was good; it allowed for a key thing that really only JoJo and Hunter x Hunter do in battles where we’re given a power set and then the characters use those powers in ways we don’t expect but are a logical extension of what we’re shown. it never felt that way with hamon, IMO.
the spin coming up in part 7 was kind of an improvement to hamon in that respect as well, I think it still felt like a magic “can do anything” power a lot of the time, but then Johnny utilized it in some cool ways with his body parts and such.
Really? I thought The Spin was way more random than Hamon.
Spoiler
I mean you’ve got stuff like Wekopiko inducing left side ataxia, Gyro randomly flattening his legs in order to avoid detection from the little dinosaurs, and that time he caused the balls to unravel into wires for their horses to gallop across. There was also stuff like perfectly controlling underground vibrations, and creating a lens from suspended water vapor. They did a ton of crazy stuff with The Spin.
I find the spin to be the more random of the two, but it needed to be in order to compete with the stands, and it had a set of basic abilities that were used for the most part that were easy to follow along to, but it did have some pretty strange uses at points.
[details=Spoiler] Hamon does too,but it seems more magical than it actually is,as there is only about 3 abilities used for the most part.
A) (for lack of a better example) acts similar to naruto’s basic chakra abilities by allowing a person to cling to surfaces and to to walk on spikes/water etc with disregard for the weight of the user.
B) Imbued stored hamon energy, which could be released in a strike in order to kill a vamp or stored in a object in order to do the same or propel something in a desired direction.
c) It can make something hold it’s shape, whether it is keeping a group of leaves in the shape of a glider, keeping water in a glass, preventing the shot glass from shattering in order to reflect the stingy eyes, or keeping a noddle wrapped around a person’s face. [/details]
Part 2 is one of my favorites as well, but it made sense for Hamon to go, offensively it is only really useful for vampires.[details=Spoiler] And since they had already beaten the ultimate vampire at the end of part 2, Araki had to move on from just vampires. That said Joseph still should have been able to beat D’Arby himself using it. But I will forgive that due to the rest of the battle being epic. [/details]
If he had used everything he’d learned in part 2 plus the stand he got in part 3, old Joseph should have been an absolute beast! Especially since Hamon can delay the effects of aging and its compatible with Hermit Purple.
[details=Spoiler] stuff you just mentioned isn’t “random;” the origin of wekapipo’s power is never explained or anything so we can’t really consider where it comes from. the first (?) flashback we have of Gyro in italy is him using the spin to severely distort the girl’s body, so it’s not really random when he uses it later.
the spin and hamon just feel too general at times and take a lot of the tension out of the fights compared to stand powers. essentially what I was getting at was that battles in part 3 and onward feel more like this is what would logically happen (and are more interesting because of one more aspect that I can get into), instead of just what the author deems will happen (which is easy to make happen when hamon and the spin can do whatever he wants). I still enjoy parts 1 and 2 because they really add a lot of weight and enrich part 3 and beyond. JoJo would not feel the same without them, regardless of them having less interesting fights than the later parts. [/details]
[details=Spoiler]Once stands were introduced the fights tended to come down to, survive long enough to find your opponent’s stand’s weakness and exploit. I like young Joseph so much because he had to use everything at his disposal to win. He had plans on plans inside of schemes inside his fights. Like the times he’d maneuvered ropes such that if they were cut the remaining pieces would still tie together in knots. Or his fight with vampire Straights where he uses every single trick he had, in order to get the win.
Many times in the parts after that it seemed like a matter of, we’ve finally figured out the stands weakness now Star Platinum/Crazy Diamond/Stone Free will proceed to pummel the opponent into a pulp. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they’re boring by any stretch of the imagination, but they do seem more formulaic.[/details]
Well to be fair “can do anything” powers is kinda just Araki’s style I think. Stand’s always get new powers or stretch their abilities to meet the situation as well in later parts.
I mean Gold Experience’s power is almost literally “whatever Giorno needs it to be at the time” in part 5. and in part 6 stand abilities got so stupid that you had ones that would literally beat themselves
The main theory as to why he didn’t keep up with training seems to be that Joseph didn’t want to end up like [details=Spoiler] Straights [/details]. A scary thought is Young Joseph with Giorno’s stand, or actually any other stand but hermit purple, let’s face it compared to others his stand was kind of lame.
imo this should be the min requirement for bodytype for all jojo cosplayers. you know their coming…soon. its gonna happen and all these skinny nerds are gonna make me so mad.
For the longest time, I’ve heard this-and-that about how great JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is, but I didn’t start getting into JoJo until over a year ago. I read all of Phantom Blood and I even bought the PS1 version of the Capcom arcade game off of eBay earlier this year. Then I realized that this year happens to be the 25th anniversary of JJBA, of all things. With the new CyberConnect2 game, the HD re-release of the arcade game, and the new anime series, I think it’s safe to say that I joined the JoJo fandom at a good time.
Speaking of the anime, this shit is too good. I was surprised at how quick-paced the first episode was, but I was also surprised by how faithful to the manga they were being, despite some censored violence and the removal of young Jonathan hiding in the tree, smoking a pipe. Episode two was also good but as I expected, shit got crazy in episode three! I’m watching this series religiously from here on out!
They’re coming out with DVDs/BDs already? They’re probably only going to have 2-3 episodes each like they do with Naruto.
Also I can’t help but feel how the “censored” episode 3 was, can’t wait to see the DVD/BD version to see if they don’t “shadow out” the gory bits. And that part with Jojo and Dio in the last scene, all I can say is that’s one long ass drop.
