John Nelson, Tournament Legacy, and Team HORI

Let’s just hope the players aren’t willing to stand in front of the metaphorical bus for JN.

They’ll stand in front of the bus cause they got money lining their pockets to absorb the impact.

Kum ba yah!

Man all it would take is one link to Desctructoid / Kotaku / etc for this to blow up entirely.

You say that as if it isn’t the works already. The best we can hope for is DJWhack to not find out about it so we don’t have to put up with shitty Lo3 nonsense.

So Fanatiq is in the process of making his second biggest mistake or will this top the April Fool’s joke?

They won’t, EG was there lol.

There’s about as much truth in that as there is in John Nelson.

It’s laughable that you of all people call this thread biased and untruthful, especially when you don’t bring anything of value to it.

Fanatiq, first and foremost, thank you for at least coming on this thread and letting me know you know this exists. Although your posts weren’t really informative one way or the other (honestly if you had a good time at Rev I’d like to hear about it), thank you for at least being the first “big” player to post.
As you did point out, and I would like to remind everyone else on this thread too, I disclaimed that my original post had to be taken with some caution. Much like many of the other posts telling about their own stories or backing my story up, they are just posts. It would be hard to prove these as cold hard facts. So take it for what it’s worth. Honestly speaking I was a bit terrified posting this when I woke up the next afternoon. I didn’t know what to expect and since I’ve never dealt with TL personally outside of attending SCR 2010 (which I approached at the time as more of a Level Up tournament than TL… I didn’t even know TL was a thing then either lol), my stories are from the outside looking in. My friends can attest to this: I was on Facebook going oh man, I might be exiled for this thread. So for everyone getting upset about Fanatiq, I can understand if you felt you’ve been screwed personally by TL, but what he said (at least about my post) is true.

Andy, thank you for coming out with the Team HORI perspective. I honestly had a really fuzzy memory about our talk over dinner so your post puts my mind at ease. I know you did not want to talk about it then and considering how long nothing was said I was very anxious about even starting this thread now. You probably already know this but I felt like saying it again. Thank you so much, I honestly got into the FGC right around the time Team Fleece Johnson (aka Team OC) started peaking and I can say it’s probably because of you Tatsu and Warahk (and regrettably Richard as well) that I stayed with FG @ UCI for as long as I did.

And to mention the last thing Andy said: although Honzo is a bit of an enthusiast, I hope the rest of us don’t literally threaten violence or any harm against Nelson or TL. I for one have said from the start: all I want are answers, or him to get out. That’s it. While I can relate to the enthusiasm some of you have displayed, please take care of yourselves. If random “he said she said” posts can be used against TL, I’m sure TL can easily use posts threatening them against you.

edit
Oh yeah one last thing Fanatiq. If you can help me correct any discrepancies in the OP, I would be very grateful if you could. As I said I’m leaving other people’s stories with their own posts, but I am not beyond modifying my post if it is needed.

For the record. I agree with no violence, but John asked me to fight him. I will not be bullied by some stay at home dad with some ego complex. I do not wish to fight John Nelson, but if it comes to that so be it.

in all seriousness tho, I do hope JN will answer in a lengthy post to show his side of the story. We all know how it’ll be written, but he at least it would show that this thread has reached him.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODS

^^ Twenty bucks on this guy. ^^

One thing that really struck me this week is that the people who work for TL act like they are in an amway/studiotraffic-esque cult. You know the type - they go out of their way to be super friendly, but it’s this creepy version of friendly where everything they say is about how great TL is and how they have a big master plan of taking over the scene and making it great and how everyone should join them etc. They are true believers. Even the older guy who was dealing with the W-9’s after the tournaments were over had this vibe. He played the same “TL was the victim” card whenever someone brought up something TL had done wrong. I felt sorry for some of the kids working for TL, talking about how they were going to transform Rev “from a gaming tournament to a major event” when in fact we were probably witnessing the last thing TL will ever do in the scene.

…and definitely wish I would have known the team Hori story months ago

Like some people have already mentioned, although there has been some JN warnings in the past, I am not knee deep enough in FGC sites/drama to have known what happened. If anything, this thread saved me from going to watch Sunday’s grand finals, which I had planned to attend in person (just to watch as I do with other tournaments).

So if anything, although this kind of stuff may not lead to any sort of realistic/complete TL ban (until JN does something illegal and gets arrested for it), it is indeed slowly opening the eyes of the more casual community. Count me as another who will avoid supporting this clown’s events in the future.

You are a plague on this community and what you did to your previous sponsor is deplorable. If John Nelson is a shady guy that’s fine. Expose it. Don’t make things worse then they already are, but counting on you to be responsible is as ridiculous as expecting my words not to be misconstrued in this thread. I never defended John Nelson at all with any of my posts in this thread for the record.

My plan for the weekend was to get in, compete, try to have fun and not give a fuck, get paid, and get out. Outside of giving a cut of my winnings to Andy, Tatsu, and Warahk, I wanted to actually limit my involvement in all the other TL drama and to never directly address it as I felt it would’ve just been a major distraction to what I was there for.

As a whole, the marvel tournament was run pretty well. Lots of good competitors, great matches, and I had fun overall. And yes, I also filled out the W-9 and am currently awaiting my prize money. I’ll keep you posted when I get it since you’re all probably curious.

You said I had errors in my post, point em out.

59:41 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

Asking people on the internet not to devolve into a mob mentality seems like a far stretch.

Thinking about the W-9 forms more, I’m going to view it as an actual way for TL making themselves liable for the payments. Which is a good thing. It’s one thing to say “oh we’ll give you cash. whoops no cash”. It’s another to have someone fill out an IRS document and then go “whoops, no cash”. So giving themselves more responsibility is at least a positive imo.

not that this has anything to do with the main issues. just wanted to squash this once and for all since i kinda started the conspiracy notions
