Jeff Schaeffer Interview / Video History of the SF2 years

a quick reaction speed test if people want to play and post results…

mine is even slower now avging 260…

The description of how Tomo got out of that Blanka setup with LK hurricane is mind bogglling :looney::looney:

How the hell did he figure that out during the tournament without any trial and error practice??? Thats remarkable

I heard about Jeff Schaefer before but what i heard didnt do enough justice. the history he gave in those interviews is incredible.

Salty i wasnt around to witness these OG’s play

My first time doing it.

Was Daigo even competitive before the ST era? He would been like 11 or 12.

I took it real fast. I averaged .181 and I am going on 40. I think that explains why I am so good with Guns.

damn no wonder I suck at fighters , avg .370

I like this one better since you can use the keyboard. Using a mouse and my right hand slows me down quite a bit. Using the keyboard and my left hand (the one that reacts first) shaves my time from .211 to .197

Jeff, could you remind us how old Tomo was during WW through Super? I know he was a teenager, and I think that makes all the difference.

Teens have all the time in the world to get good at something, and the drive to do it.

this is the one I practice with.

I don’t know how much that test really means in regard to your reaction time while actually playing a fighting game. I almost never get faster than .23 on the one posted, but I can usually hit .16 on this one.

hmmm… i lke that sheep one… and i do think it applies more to fighting games than the one i posted.

my avg on that one was .2128… MUCH faster than on the others.

@ jeff… man i dont know why you gave up on the fighting game scene… you could still easily own people up with reactios that fast… thanks for posting up your time at 40 years old thats f’n remarkable… i’m 32 and obviously nowhere near that.

on that sheep one, I’m averaging .16 which is basically what my average is on this one

I find it odd that depending on how the reaction time test is created, determines how fast your reaction time is.

To be clear, I don’t know that the sheep one is particularly relevant either. I just find it interesting that I score much better on some tests than others.

:karate:

God like post man, really. Hope you get back on the playing field soon. just saying.

perhaps an average of the different kinds of tests would be useful? lol

I’ve gotten .171 and averaged around .212 averages for one of them. I think getting used to the tests helps a lot

I got a .078 on the last click of that stoplight one the first time I played it. gonna try these more out later

does anyone know how they figure out the averages? I thought it was adding them all up together and then dividing by 5, but that doesn’t seem to be the case

There’s lag factors though with those tests like input lag on the monitor (who uses CRT monitors anymore?) and random system lag. So your actual response time could be better than indicated.

I am infinitely grateful to Jeff for making those videos. I’ve honestly watched them a few times over already.

I think he was champion at 14, and he quit at 17. Sounds accurate.

wonder why the sheep one is so much easier,
I know horizontal motion is much easier for the brain to see than vertical motion, maybe color change would fall into a slower category aswell. might have something to do with the brain comprehending rods faster than cones or something, since peripheral vision is mostly rods and is a faster way to perceive motion at least. auditory is still probably the fastest.
assuming they are both accurate of course

I practice my reaction time every once and a while and my reaction time is basically the same. 165ish MS. give or take a few points.

Now on the sheep, I find myself hitting 100ms-130ms occasionally. Usually once or twice every test and in some cases 3-4. I rarely hit that low on the one where it changes boxes. Typically, I hit something like that maybe 1 out of every 10-15 times with the box test.

the sheep test is a bit better for testing REAL reaction time IMO because the sheep fake you out. Its the only reaction test I’ve came across that tries to fake you out. So its like looking for the normal rather than anticipating it. If you try to react to any visual change, its not going to work all the time. The sheep are moving\eating. There’s an animation where the sheep looks like it will run but doesn’t and sometimes you can’t even the see sheep running @ all because they’re hiding with the other sheep.

I was not aware that vertical motion is harder to keep up with rather than horizontal motion. Looks like my mixups will be more vertical now. If you have anymore little tid bits about reaction time, I’m all ears.

Few bottles of cider slows my reactions down a bit, sure, but also unleashes my latent psychic powers.
