Jeff Schaeffer Interview / Video History of the SF2 years

Very good post. I suggest more people read it.

Jeff Schaeffer is a true OG. Glad to see his youtube stuff getting views.

the sheep game in that was posted a few pages back penalizes you for trying to psychic click. Kinda hard to cheat like that. Matter of fact, the game itself tries to trick you.

Probably the best one I’ve played so far. The one you posted only penalizes you for clicking early. The sheep game feints you and does other cheap shit. Its actually a multi layer reaction game. Even though you’re only reacting to the sheep popping out, you have to distinguish between several fakes the game does to you and still react fast enough.

here’s the game

in terms of reacting to SF style counters, this is probably the closest and its still far off from being a reaction test that directly reflects SF.

that sheep one is funny as hell. and it looks like some starting frames are skipped…or they’re just moving that damn fast o.o

it looks like the sheep games does everything possible to fake how its going to throw the sheep out. Anywhere from throwing a sheep out so you can’t see its starting animation. Some sheep look like they been shot out of a cannon and other sheep try to fake you by creating that start up animation and then not moving forward. While penalizing you for any psychic click to try to cheat a score.

I miss those competitive days when it wasn’t all mainstream and your skill wasn’t based on a popularity contest.

I’ve never seen these videos before (no surprise there.) Hooked me in part 1 and just finished it. Really interesting stuff seeing as how I wasn’t part of the SF community until recently. Thanks for sharing.

i’d seen these a while back. clocked the first one at 3:30am and couldn’t stop watching. thanks for uploading jeff :wgrin:

Jeff, Valle, Viscant, and now APOC posting, this thread is complete.

who else played tomo aside Jeff and can confirm that he was completely untouchable?

Mike Watson has said many times that tomo was far and away the best, so has kuni. They both played him a lot at world’s finest comic store

My reactions seem to be shit, but my consistency at having shitty reactions is fuckin’ godlike

I can’t tell, but it seems the ones that come from near the bottom automatically lower your score. because the shape of the sheep formation goes out more along there, it takes longer for those to show. but it seems that running area, while hidden by some sheep, still counts towards your reaction time : /

Speaking of A2, let’s play A2 on ggpo sometime again

lol at thinking the OG players were better than current top players such as Taira:

The mental games back in the time were not even close to this, except possibly Tomo’s. The problem with believing that Tomo’s game was similar to the top players playing now, is that his competition’s gameplay was not on the level of the top players now. It’s really hard to believe that ONE person can be so much higher level than his competition and that no one would rise to the next level, especially if many people were playing him.

You keep pointing to all these things that Jeff says that support that Tomo was the best player but then ignore things that LAAkira posted:

“As for the Tomo question, its impossible to answer unless he actually played over there. You can speculate all you want, but at that level its just gonna come down to who is more precise, who can employ their strategy better and who outguesses who. Tachikawa was surely on Tomos level and one time I talked to him, he told me that there were some incredible players in Osaka during the time of WW and CE so who knows, there might have been too many top notch players for Tomo to handle.”

You people don’t even know anything about the Osaka play at the time so where are you getting these wild statements from. Most people here worshipping Tomo have never seen him play either, besides those laughable tutorial videos.

Also there’s all this talk about the OG player’s footsie game. Sure, they may have been great at footsies but I can’t see how today’s player’s footsies are worse. Today’s gameplay, there is a greater emphasis on other parts of the gameplay aside from footsies, so some people could be getting the impression that there is less footsies going on. The gameplay has evolved due to the knowledge of the game increasing, the accuracy of execution increasing and thus the metagame evolving.

ya man, old skool cant be betta than japan now. i agree with you, i’ve watched too much anime, so i kno wat the japansnese mentality is like.

Emil, wanna get the ramen-flavoured dicks out of your mouth?

Amazing videos. Definitely watched all of it instead of studying for my finals.

how do you know?

didnt kuni funada once say that if tomo still played he’d be at least one of the top 3 SF2 players? is that japanese enough for you to believe?

I tried Schaeffer’s jump-up-and-down strat with Blanka in a HF tourney today. Worked surprisingly well. Made it through to the finals then switched to Ryu/Guile cos I wasn’t in the mood for a Blanka mirror match.

I love this thread. great reads here from OGs.

BTW any Tachikawa info/vids wathever?
