What can SF4 include to make it as fun as the SF2 engine was?
After reading through this thread and watching the Schaeffer videos, I went downstairs and bought Hyper Fighting off the XBLA.
I would be very interested in seeing this
good stuff
so why is the hyper room on ggpo always empty? Step one for reviving this game is arguably getting peope on GGPO regularly, then holding tournaments at regional events.
Good point, I guess gaming in this instance could be considered more of a sport than a game like chess. Coordination/ physical attributes are irrelevant whereas gaming requires physical and mental. Yet genetics applies to mental strength as well and genetics often coincides with skill. I’ve never played Chess so I am just making presumptions.
ggpo HF is fucked up. Shit always desyncs sooner or later. Not a big problem but it can be a lil annoying. Anywhere from 1-2 games to 20 games there will be a desync. There have been days where every game would desync and you would have to reconnect, other days you can play up to 20 games with no desyncs. More people need to play though.
me and silks used to play occasioanlly on there as well as other people but I haven’t seen them in a while. The CE room has people playing pretty much every night even though its a small scene.
Reaction times will always be a part of SF. so what would you prefer an OG game where a reaction counter will only take off 5-10% of your life, or SF4 where that reaction counter leads to an FDAC into super which takes off 30- 50%?
In the end the better playing is going to win, its just with big combos and ultras it makes you think that you’re always within striking distance of making a comeback.
Best quote to describe the old school from Jeff Schaeffer:
“This is the strategy, secrecy, intimidation, don’t talk to them.”
Great video from Jeff, I love reminiscing.
I actually think SF4 is much less reaction based and more decision based because of the overall slower game speed. You can also use Shoryu FADC Ultra without reacting to anything, although I don’t really want to get into whether I think FADCing is broken or not.
Question for hypothetical round robin, and anybody else if they can answer:
Did the “purists” ever win tourneys, or did they just get rep for maining an underdog character? (Why did Kuni play Zangief, and why did Apoc pick Balrog in A3.)
And, to Viscant, and anybody else who cares to answer–what kind of characters should I try to play competitively if I don’t have an ultra-solid OG ground game. Are mixup gimmicks and educated guessing all I’ve got? (Please don’t just say yes.)
Thanks.
terrible. Reaction time isn’t the only factor. Its only one of many.
we’re all born with gifts. Some are naturally smarter, some have god like reaction time, some players have better spacial abilities, some have better pattern recognition, some have better patience, some have a better intuitive feel for the game, some are average in all the areas rather than being dominant in one. Its all about maximizing what you’re born with and working on your weaknesses. Its a fighting game. Even though the characters in the game have statistics, so does every human player.
For instance, not every player with fast reaction time is smart. Not every smart player has good pattern recognition. A player who can recognize patterns may have bad spatial distancing. You may never catch up to someone who has god like reaction time because you may be naturally slower, but that player may never be as smart as you ever. There’s a balance.
When you get someone who’s in the top 5% of all the traits that make a good SF player, you’re looking @ generational player. Its not their fault they were born like that and this happens in sports all the time. Ali in boxing, jordan in basketball, tiger in golf.
^^^awesome post. reminds me of one of mine.
and toatlly true… however i would argue that good reaction times are by far the best trait to have.
they’re much more powerful than any one of the other “gifts”.

You can only do what you can do, but study and practice go along way.
I can agree with that.
I didn’t know it was a controversy that I beat Alex 1 time, JUST 1 time, at SHGL. I say I did, people that were there said I did, and people that were NOT EVEN THERE are saying I didn’t…I don’t even know how to respond to that except… sorry I offended you?
155ms is really fast and tomo’s was faster?
for those wondering, 205-220ms is about the average human reaction time.
155 is insane!
my shitty ass is at like 250 avg… quickest is like 205… i really should give up fighting games…
but they’re just so much FUN!
man if tomo had quicker reactions than that… its pretty much unbelievable to me… dont know how one would go about even attempting how to beat that.
i wonder what current top players reaction times are like daigos valles wongs etc. … would be interesting to know.

i’ve tested @ 165ms consistently. All though I have tested in the 150’s, I could never consistently do it so I don’t count those.
if jeff was @ 155ms and tomo was faster, that would make tomo 130ms and under? god damn?!?
Tomo
Thank you
