JAPAN THREAD 2010: Let's do this ish!

Posted this in the Official Japan 2.0 thread before noticing this one, so thought I’d put it here too:

I’m going to be visiting Japan during the first week of April (2nd) for about two or three weeks. I’m an average SF4 player, occasionally stealing wins from top players down here in SoCal…so I’m really looking to step up my game when I get there. I’m going to be staying at the Ikebukuro district and definitely plan on hitting up Big Box for some real comp.

However, since this is my first time visiting I really want to make the most of my trip so, I have other interests in mind. The essential list goes:

Alcohol
SF4/MvC2/3s
Food

In no particular order, but preferably in close company with each other. In short, I’m basically looking for some cool peeps to get some drinks, play some games, and get some good eats with. A buddy of mine (Shogo from Denjin-Arcade here in SoCal) used to tell me about how good the ramen was in Japan…so if anyone on here could point me in the right direction when I get there, that would be awesome.

I went to Monkey House yesterday and played a few people but I don’t know faces or names in videos, but they seem to have accepted my skill, they said I had good gameplay. That is rare for Japanese to say that to a foreigner as far as I know, they usually want to beat the shit out of you. They were making a big scene while I was playing who I think was Deshiken (he wasn’t using ken until the end though.) We were pretty face to face there.

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone was around the Yokota/Fussa area. Been wanting to find players nearby to play SF4 with.

I’m gonna be living in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto starting April 6th for a couple of months for language studies. I’d really like to be able to meet up with some fellow SRK members and play SF4, drink, chill, whatever.

If anyone in the area wants to hang out, just hit me up with a pm and we can trade skype/msn stuff. I won’t know anyone in Japan outside of my fellow classmate (and he’s not into games, let alone SF), so I’m kinda winging it lol.

Anyways, hope to hear from/meet some of you!

eh so whos going to the nationals tourney again? ive just reached japan the other day and been caught up with stuff.

whos going again?

that is my priority list as well. i got a family now so I have to add them at the top, but whatever.

for booze, before you go clubbing, drinking, etc. go to the corner store and buy JPY100 ~ JPY201 chu hais (7 ~ 8 % alco) or JPY197 Asahi/Kirin Strong Beer (7% alco) and down a couple of them to save you money.

for places to drink, there are izakayas that have nomihodai for like JPY3000 ± JPY500. I know one in shibuya by HMV that has nomihodai from 12 to 5 am for only JPY2500… i love that place. theyll even put glases of whiskey or vodka on the table so they can go in the back and fuck off.

food, yoshinoya, mcdonalds, or any corner store is good enough and cheap.

i didn’t rreally read your question (if any), but i hope this helps.

im bout to start my day and drin an Asahi Strong Off now! (its like 1000)

Just got back from Big Box Taito Station in Takadanobaba. Here’s a guide to get there in case anyone is trying to figure out:

Torp, get at me when you get here. I’m leaving to go to Osaka for 5 days on Tuesday, but I also go to Sophia.

hopefully Ill be able to attend, is there a map somewhere of the location in Akihabara? thanks

can someone tell me where Mikado arcade is located? i’ve been told it’s walking distance from Big Box, but I can’t find the place. anyone?

Im not the best artist, but its something like this:

lol awesome paint skillz

That’s basically it. But if you want more specific:

Take Waseda exit, go to the left. Pass the pachinko place, take another left. Walk up the side street, Mikado will be on your right next to a Lawson.

Hi Reno, I’ll first answer these questions and then move on from there.

1.) I am staying @ Setagaya-ku, Tokyo 155-0032, JAPAN or ???

2.) Street Fighter 4 and 3s

3.) - I will just be with my Fiance.
- We already have a place to stay with fiends. Also staying in Kyoto for 2 nights.
- Spending needs: Kuroda DVD set (Game Inn) - Sight seeing - Basically we’ve got almost our entire trip planned out except for my Arcade Adventures.

More Detail:

My Fiance and I have decided to visit Japan for our Honeymoon! We’re getting married in CA,USA on June 12 but we wanted to go to Tokyo during Sakura season to experience it at its peak as we’ll probably only be able to make it over to Japan once maybe twice if we are lucky. (Return some day to watch SBO) =D!

So far I’ve been reading through this thread and jotting down notes. My places of interest so far are:

  • Big Box for SF4 play - Have directions
  • Taito Station - Have directions
  • Mikado - Just to check it out - Have directions
  • Akihabara for Manga, Arcade parts, Maid Cafe’s, Anime, Arcades - Have directions
  • Game Inn Sakura - SF4 play + I NEED to pick up the Kuroda 3s set. - Have directions I think - Is this current?
  • Playing 3s would be amazing, I’m guessing Game Inn for 3s?

We’ve purchased a week long JR Rail pass here in the states already for about $350US so I think if I stick to the Yamanote line per suggestions here I may be able to knock out all of my destinations with just that train line. It looks like the closest point to where I’m staying is the ‘Meguro’ station.

We were originally planning to go into the norther mountains to experience the Takaragawa Onsen but that ended up clashing with our Cherry Blossom plans so we canceled that and we’ll now have more time in Tokyo!

I would sincerely enjoy meeting up with any SRK’ers in Tokyo to spend a couple of day’s exploring Arcade’s getting some drinks and food and taking in the Japanese Arcade scene for all its worth. =)

I also noticed that there are a couple of big tournaments going on in Japan during my visit dates:

  • God’s Garden
  • Nationals? - More info on this would be GREAT! Dates; Location; Cost?

I know there has been some info on National’s here, is that the same tournament as God’s Garden? Apologies if I’m being very daft about this. I am running out of time before my departure to do more research but I will be avidly checking this thread during my travels to see if anyone wants to meet up.

Here is a picture we just took so you can recognize us

SF Experience:
Started with SF2 back in the arcade played for years. Lost interest during high school. Picked it back up after high school with 3rd strike and have been playing 3s for roughly 3-4 years now. Been playing SF4 since release, entered eVo last year and hold regular meet’s at my house with a tight nit group of SRK locals here in SLO, CA.

Good day guys! Nice thread with good info on Japan!

Be in Tokyo from 4th April for a week and staying at Shinjuku Washington. Any nearby place of good interest for like-minded peeps?

By the way, got some good information on parts purchasing in Akihabara from this site http://pld.hp.infoseek.co.jp/map-e.html

Would also like to take the chance to find out if there are other second-hand shops like Super Potato around. Trying to pick up some good’ol NeoGeo accessories and games while i’m there.

Can’t wait to be there myself. Cheers all!

Thnx for the info guys! The map was very funny but very useful . I went over yesterday night to check out the scene and had plenty of comp in 3s and sf4 (no cvs2 though :arazz:). I would have stayed there longer but my chick snatched me away like she always does.

In Tokyo - Setagaya-ku, Daizawa

I just got to Tokyo yesterday! I’m staying at Daizawa neighborhood in Setagaya-ku. I’m about a 5 minute train ride from Shibuya. I randomly stumbled upon Shinjuku Sports Land Shibuya. I didn’t get a chance to go in and play yet because we were heading to dinner to get some Okonomiyaki! Sooo Good.

Video I took walking across Shibuya:

I may try and head over to Sports Land later tonight depending on where I’m at to hit up the Tuesday night 3s and SF4 comp. If anyone else is interested let me know. Also I got a rental phone at the airport which is about 80 yen per minute but incoming calls are free for me.

Anyone else have plans to play tonight? Let me know and we can exchange phone numbers.

Game Versus (which is Game Inn Sakura but different location and name) is the best place for 3s I’m guessing.

GodsGarden is already finished but Nationals is on Sunday in Akihabara. They’re going to have playable versions of Super SF4 there as well so just for that it’s probably worth your while to check it out.

hey guys, do you know if there’s any arcade with SF4 machines in Ginza? (and if there’s no arcade in Ginza, which stop on the JR train is has the closest arcade?)

and do all arcades that have SF4 cabs sell cards?

if the arcades close at 12am, what times do the trains stop running?

thanks for any help, much appreciated
