First day in Tokyo, and man is it expensive :frowning:

The limo bus from the airport, a meal out and buying the train card, i’ve already spent 50.

I’m gonna have to penny pinch my way through the next 7 days!

Good evening, everyone. I am currently staying in Maizuru, in the Kyoto prefecture. I’ll be here for at least a week in homestay, and I’d like to know of any arcades nearby. I mostly play Street Fighter 4.

Thanks a lot for the help hfz. Id never have found that tiny side entrance for the life of me.

LOL no probs man. Ive never been there myself, I bought most of my stuff online (ordered straight from the official sanwa site lol)…

So, I’m going to be in Japan for the rest of the year beginning March 9th. Anyone know the cheapest place to get a good arcade stick for PS3? Need to be on point when SSF4 comes out.

Dunno, what kind of good did you have in mind? TE-good or average-good?

Hori V3 is about 4800?, which is pretty affordable in my book. Did you check Amazon?

Hey Reno, when is the best time/day to go to Sega Avion in Osaka for SFIV action? I’ve just moved here from London and would like to get some good fights going on. Thanks!

Hey everyone!

So starting from March 26th I will be in Japan for an international exchange for one semester (So I’ll be in Japan until August).

I’m going to be living in Koganei-shi in Tokyo and my school will be located in Chiyoda-ku. I’m sure I can figure it out eventually on my own, but anyone know any good spots to jam some SF4 around those 2 areas?

Also, regarding getting a cell phone. What do you guys recommend for me? What are the recommended carriers or plans, etc? I heard from someone that most places will not allow a short-term student to get on any set plan and I most likely will have to use some sort of prepaid card. And in regards specifically to the ability to customize my SF4 card, is there any specific type of phone that I need to get. Or do basically all cell phones have some sort of access to the internet?

And to my knowledge I cannot use my iPhone in Japan? Yet I remember seeing on softbank’s website that they have the iPhone available. So I’m confused on this one… Anyone know?

Other than that, I look forward to meeting many of you folks. I hope to hit up some arcades and tournaments while I’m there and hopefully with the company of some other gaijin.

Peace

No way! If what it sounds like is true, you’ll be living in the same dorm I lived in for a year. lol

Going to Sophia?

If that’s the case, Musashi-Koganei has two arcades near the station, but no SF4 (Unless it changed). They have Teken in one right by the dorm, and maybe some other stuff, but I never went there. The other arcade used to have one SF4 setup, but apparently no one played there, so they took it out and put in some god awful shooter game in its place.

I mostly played in Kichijouji or Shinjuku or Shibuya. If you get the rail pass, Shinjuku and Kichijouji will be free for you to go to. If you do go to Shibuya, go to Shibuya Sports Land. The owner is really nice, there’s free play on Thursdays, and it’s only 50 yen per play.

If you’re not going to Sophia, it doesn’t really matter, since Musashi-Koganei has more shit than higashi-Koganei, and they only had two arcades. lol So this could help you either way.

As for cell phones, I used Soft Bank Double White plan for the year. You have to be there for over 90 days to sign a contract, so you should be fine in that sense. If I recall correctly, the White plans don’t charge a cancellation fee, so it seemed to be the best for us, since we were only there for a year, and probably would be the same for you.

As far as the iPhone goes, you might as well bring it with you and go to a place like Shibuya where they have clerks that can speak English. You might ask them if you can get a different SIM card or something put into your phone. It’d save you about $200 for the cost of the phone. I’d advise you go through the English speaking branches either way, unless you’re fluent. A few of my friends in the dorm decided to get their cell phones early in Kichijouji with a friend translating, and ended up paying full price for their phones when they should have gotten student discounts.

As far as SF4 is concerned, you can access it from pretty much any phone in Japan. However, there was another member of SRK that had an iPhone and couldn’t access the SF4 site, so I don’t know if they changed it or what. If it becomes too much of a hassle to worry about bills and whatnot, you can always just get a prepaid phone, but their internet stuff is a little different. It’s probably be better if someone who has used one filled you in.

Hope this helps! PM me if you are going to Sophia and staying at the dorm in Koganei. I can give you some more advise that’ll help you out. I’m gonna be there again at the end of June til July, so we could probably hang out and catch some games if you wanted.

Hi there, Im going to Japan for 2 weeks on vacation starting April 2nd, I was wondering if it is possible for me to attend the SF4 national tournament on the 4th of April, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Yes, you can attend the national tournament even if you aren’t participating.

thanks for the answer, could you please tell me how I get in (do I need tickets in advance?), thanks again.

I noticed your tag says your location is in Osaka, I plan on doing a day trip to Osaka, are there any good arcades near tourist spots? thanks again… really appreciate the help

You don’t need tickets to get in IIRC, you just come and go as you please from what I know.

Best arcades in Osaka near the tourist spots are Monte 50 and Sega Avion, in Umeda and Nanba respectively. I’m at work right now so I can’t really write a whole lot but I will later on.

Oh shit! Yeah I’m going to Sophia lol. Damn, that’s so good to know someone who has been through the same school and dorm experience. I definitely have a lot to ask you. I’ll PM you so as to not flood this thread.

I was going to ask about any other hot spots on my train route, but didn’t want to bother anyone with such specifics. But dang you just helped me out there a bunch. That’s perfect. I’ll probably be hitting up Shinjuku and Shibuya Sports Land a bunch then.

Anyone here going to the national tournament? Are there any Americans qualified for that by the way?

Also, what is the low-down in terms of regular SF4 tournaments in Japan. All I know is the TRF tournament.
