On April 3, The Etrium (The Etrium) in co-operation with iPlayWinner (iPLAYWINNER) will be hosting a special Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs Capcom 3 charity tournament to benefit aid relief in Japan due to the catastrophic earthquakes and tsunami that have, and continue to severely devastate the nation. The fighting game community has always had very strong ties with Japan and we hope for this to be an excellent opportunity for everyone here to show their support and let our friends and fellow competitors across the Pacific know that we’re here to lend a helping hand.

A live broadcast of the event is planned and will mark the first ever live collaboration between iPlayWinner and Level | Up Series (Welcome to Level|Up) as the two teams will be joining forces on a single channel to maximize our contributions to the relief efforts. Level | Up will be hosting their own charity event at the University of California Irvine, which you may read about here on Shoryuken (http://shoryuken.com/f7/japan-relief-fundraising-tournament-april-3rd-%40-university-california-irvine-268504/).

For donations we’ll be utilizing the Global Giving platform (GlobalGiving) for both the tournament proceeds and online donations. Global Giving currently has a project open for Japanese relief efforts (Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund - GlobalGiving) which distributes funds to where they are most needed, and allows us to setup our own donation box. Both the online donations and tournament proceeds will go to the joint donation box of iPlayWinner and Level | Up.

Just a quick note… the Mad Catz prizes (Rat7 Gaming Mouse and t-shirts) will have to be shipped after the tournament. MarkMan just informed me today that there’s no way he can get them out in time due to some business with their shipping facility. After the tournament I’ll be taking the information of the top three finishers in each game and MarkMan will ship out your prizes on Tuesday, April 5.

Also, we’ll have regular raffle drawings for prizes including a Hori Wireless PS3 Fight Stick, BROKENTIER shirts and Kineda Tees. Entrants will receive 10 tickets per every $5 they spend and we will have a donation box on site in which you will receive the same deal. The proceeds of the donation box will of course all go to our GlobalGiving fund for Japan relief efforts.

I’m hopeful that you’ll all come out and show your support for this fantastic cause. This is a great opportunity for all of us to do something special for our friends in Japan, as well as to get together and appreciate all the friends we have here. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know and I’ll work with you to iron them out. I should have a lot more news in the coming week as the iPlayWinner side and the Level | Up sides of planning come together in their efforts. Thank you and I’ll see you on April 3!

Going to be tight, great to see the fighting game community coming together to do something positive.

Everyone needs to turn out for this one.

 Good job setting this up Jared!

Are we gonna be playing on the etrium TV’s or we bring in ASUS monitors?

Kineda: I’m trying! Haha… I’m trying.

Roger: We’ll be using the Etrium’s TVs. I know they’re not up to EVO standards but I’ve made two trips now to play on them and it’s a slight adjustment. If a scrub like me can adjust my timing after a round, I think you all should be fine

In the future, Etrium tournaments can use ASUS monitors and the staff has expressed interest in purchasing their own as well. But for right now, I felt that the cause of the event outweighed the need for absolutely specific gameplay. The Etrium also has more than enough space and setups to comfortably run the tournament and to get it done in an very timely manner.

If this is an absolute deal breaker for many people, we’ll see what we can pull off but I’m hopeful that we can push through this at least once

I’m not a fan of The Etrium’s monitors/TVs but in this case its all about coming out and helping aid Japan. I expect everyone to come out and support this event due to that fact. Good job Jared.

Thanks Joe!

One other detail I forgot to mention… we’ll be posting all the results on iPlayWinner, particularly how much money was raised. For the tournament proceeds we’ll be posting the receipts of the cash transactions to GlobalGiving so that everyone can be confident the money is going to the right place.

hurrah for collaboration!

this is great! i’ll try to make it out.

 We (Game-Zone Recreation) support this and we’ll help out

Yeah, shout outs to Batman for helping me get the ball rolling on this and for being really awesome about introducing me to all the right folks. Now I just have to, you know, not screw this up

Lol no pressure man! Should be fun I’m looking forward to this.

won’t be able to make it, got work that day

be sure to arrange a paypal so all the stream monsters and those of us unable to go can pitch in as well

Something like that! We’re using GlobalGiving which will allow viewers to donate online and straight to the cause itself. I’m hoping to have all this information up by Monday at the latest so it should make a lot more sense soon. I’m working together with the Level | Up guys so everything has to get approved twice

I would like to come out to this lol, sounds pretty dope even if i don’t play those games seriously to just help out in some way.

Hey all, just a few quick updates before we get ready to launch the mini-site for the event this Monday.

  • The venue fee has been sorted out. It will be $3 per entry and will not be tacked on to the existing entry fees.

  • HORI and Mad Catz are confirmed for sponsorship, with the former providing an array of controllers and the latter a bunch of non-controller goodies to the top 3 finishers of each game. We’re still working on nailing down some more sponsors for prizes but it’s looking very promising! I hope to be able to put together some prize packages to tell you all about by mid-week. But at least now I can confirm 100% that you won’t be leaving empty handed

  • Haunts is lending a hand with the monitor situation. I’ve heard a lot of feedback that basically boils down to “ASUS or bust,” and so it looks like we’ll be running both tourneys on EVO monitors. That said, the Etrium’s monitors will be available for casuals. We’ve also discussed running a Call of Duty side-tourney, so if there’s any interest in that let us know! The Rock Band Room should also be open as well.

I honestly dislike giving out this sort of preliminary info before everything is completely nailed down, but with only 11 days from the announcement to the event, I feel like I have to give you guys something to go on  In any case, things are definitely progressing.

+1 evo monitor

**KS2 Productions will be sponsoring this event with:

9x Asus VH236H monitors

See everyone there!**
