James Cameron's Avatar (Dec. 18th)

Avatar Now Turning In A Profit < link :bgrin:

I think people just need to know what they’re getting into. If you’re going in expecting to see good CG, then you’re going to enjoy this movie, and more power to you. People expecting a complex story should be wary.

No one should be going to this movie expecting something deep as none of the preview material, articles and interviews is even hinting that it’s complex, original, or deep. It’s just a good movie.

You would expect a movie with a 500 mil price tag to have at least hired a writer or two. Just because a film is supposed to be a cg extravaganza doesn’t mean it’d okay for it to cheap out on story. Some people happen to think a good movie requires a good plot as well ya know.

i thought it was a great story, the problem was people have seen it 100 times told through diffferent characters in a different environment. since there are going to be more movies i see this one as more of an introduction to the world and how jake becomes the leader of the tribe.

i expect great things from the next movies. the world is very unique and the story can literally go in ANY direction. if cameron flops the next movies somehow, hes a cockboy.

Any one that honestly hates this movie either saw the non-3D version or is just seeking attention.

The story was typical and has been done before yes… But they threw the Avatar twist into it and I liked it.

The way I see it, if Avatar was anymore complex it wouldn’t have met this much mainstream success it had. You’d be surprised how many people I’ve talked to that liked the story simply because it was generic and “feel-good.” It almost as if the predictability gave them a comfy feeling- that perfect escapist fantasy.

Now that the Avatar world has its foundation set, Cameron now has the freedom to do a MASSIVE expansion, like he did with his R-rated franchises.

Yeah, he can just keep on expanding on the ecosystem. There’s probably tons of different species of animals and flora and fauna that we haven’t seen yet.

spoiler:

What do you guys think became of the indian doctor and the guy from grandmas boy, and whoever else stayed?

hypothetically speaking, if i was one of them, i would try to do the same thing Jake did. Since the Indian guy didn’t have an Avatar, what did he do though? Could he produce a new Avatar for himself?

It did have a good story. Pay attention next time. Original =/= good every time. It’s a bit atypical and predictable but it’s still good and well told. Not the best ever but good.

Well he was just a scientist for the avatar project, he wasn’t a driver. He did stay behind though I think. Dunno about Joel David Moore. He stayed behind but I dunno if he made a new Avatar for him or what, they might not have the facilities to do it at the camp but do on Earth/on the ships

I watched it again today and had to keep my 3D glasses off for awhile because I had a bad headache going in. I think the movie looks better in 2D personally… more bright and colorful. 3D is just a nice bonus but totally something I could live without… the movie doesn’t depend on it at all.

Okay then. Remember the part that happens in all these kind of movies, where the protagonist is “exiled” and everybody hates him and he does some thing to gain their forgiveness?

In this one, the protagonist hears a story about how the chosen one is the guy who can fly the big angry pterodactyl, this story being touched upon only for about 30 seconds in the movie, then he just goes and tames the thing, which recieves no screentime at all. He then goes back to the people right as their grieving and they see his pet and now the women who blames him for her’s father’s death and the guy who’s hated his guts since the beginning of the movie and everybody else are all of a sudden cool with him. And then he goes around and all the other people are cool with him too and now they’re a team. The scene was totally rushed just to get to the whole panzer dragoons vs. rockem sockem terrans scene. That’s not good storytelling, that’s just lazy.

Dude after your crybaby tears dry how about a fucking spoiler tag asshole.

what the hell man

3D version has 2 images overlaying each other, its blurred without the glasses, how did you not get a headache watching it without them!?!

Yes seriously, nothing wrong with story, it was perfectly excecuted.

"I don’t believe in fairy tale endings"

The whole story was a fairy tale!

Most of the scenes had something that wasn’t blurred… whatever you are supposed to focus on usually just looks normal. Then everything goes double, more double the further away or closer it is supposed to look. it was pretty cool seeing how they were using the 3D.

Just watched this shit last night, IMAX 3D.

Fucking Epic(visually) movie.

Loved it!

Did this movie really cost $500 million? Wikipedia says $237 million, with another $150 mil for advertising.

No it didn’t cost 500 mil to make. A lot of places are tossing the new Camera development onto the the price tag of the movie inflating it’s over all price.
