I think the movie poses a really interesting philosophical/metaphysics/scientific idea of a transfer of the soul or mind to a different body. Sort of how Ghost in the Shell did.
And the idea of dreams being a reality in some way too could be brought to discussion, like it was during the REM sleep stage that he could control the avatar body and it still existed in his own reality where his body was in stasis during the time he controlled it.
im very well versed in mushroom taking, so im not really worried about controlling myself beyond saying this like “whoa” and “im fuckin flying” really loud while laughing tears of joy. planned on taking about 2.3 (1/3 of a Q i have left splitting with 2 others) in a tea and we’re gonna smoke a bomber before going in obviously, probably drink the tea 45 mins before the movie.
mostly i just expect an incredible visual experience, and often on mushrooms i can analyze what im watching with much greater detail. for some reason i notice a LOT more nuances and subtleties in an actors performance, so maybe ill gain a new perspective on it.
but mostly i just expect it to be a shitload of fun.:looney:
I went to see it In Imax 3d and I enjoyed it. Very visually impressive movie and I’m sooooo fucking glad Cameron didn’t pull that cheesy ass ‘it’s a 3d movie so lets make sure we have stuff pointing or shooting out at the screen’. Everything felt pretty natural in terms of visuals and often times I had to prevent myself from lifting my hand up to push something out of my face lol. I enjoyed the movie even if it wasn’t original…that didn’t make any differance to me. Originality is a hard thing to come by these days since so much territory has already been trekked. If given the chance I’d go see it again but only this time make sure I’d get better seats in the IMAX theater.
And just like others have said…the Colonel was bad ass if not an absolute nut. That whole crash that he was involved in within the climax was crazy.
Meh. Saw it yesterday. Essentially “Dances with Wolves” with aliens. Well made overall, but way too long and Cameron pretty much ruined the plot with the “99.9% of humans are nothing but money grubbing assholes” subtext.
lol I don’t know how you came to that conclusion, it’s not as if they booted all the humans off the planet. It was more or less only the miltary and the miners that were booted, he does say something along the lines of “selected few were allowed to stay” then the camera pans to the asian scientist which would suggest all the scientists were allowed to stay.
If you are looking for subtext its more about how modern day humanity (in developed nations) have completely lost touch with nature and are destroying it in the pursuit of economic and technological advancement. Its this connection the Nav’vi or “savages” as the Colonel calls them shared with nature that saves them.
As well as how europeans conducted relations back in the day when some darker-hued people seen as less than human had land or resources they wanted. I haven’t seen this movie, but I have yet to see a single brother in the credits or trailers. Just caucasians and hispanics. Is that intentional…some sort of futuristic poke at real life history?
He used some black actors as key characters
IMDB: Zoe Saldana=Neytiri, CCH Pounder=Moat, Laz Alonso=Tsu’tey, Sean Anthony Moran=Private Fike, Peter Mensah=Horse Clan Leader
I thought they seemed black. So na’vi were basically aliens. I like your other take about what the movie was about. Most people probably won’t realize it. Somebody else could say it was about white people dominating minorites, but I don’t believe at all the movie was trying to portray that.
i always lol @ people who make the connection “this movie is about white people being the best race”
who the fuck cares what his skin colour is!!? does it really matter?? if he was black, but acted the exact same way would we be having this conversation about black superiority and how its not fair to portray black people being the best native? fuck no. theres no reason the main character can’t be chinese, black, brown or even a fuckin native (assuming native american actors still exist)
race is just a pigment of your skin, and really has nothing to do with anything, so i wish people would stop crying racism.
however if Jake said things like “our people are the only ones who can bring hope to these savages” then you might have a case, but you don’t so shut up.
edit: not that you were saying anything like that Sensei Rouzu, incase you thought i was talking to you. i was more talking about the guy you quoted, whom i think is an idiot.
Yeh you are right about that, its used so often, sad but thats just part of western cinema, the movie was written in the 90s you have to expect it, like sterotypes, the token ethnic, or the black guy that dies first. I didn’t think to much of it in Avatar because it was more about becoming “one of them” not about becoming their God.
NINJA EDIT: Crayz Penguin is right, the race card is called too many times. But saying that (offtopic) Michael Bay is still a twat.
The movie that pissed me off the most is the new King Kong, they took a 1930s book which was racist in its portrayal of blacks as savages and kept it in.
If people’s main complaint is “I’ve seen ferngully” and all that bullshit then don’t go see any movie that’s comin out cause it’s all just rehashes of old shit that’s been done anyway.
The movie was awesome, no matter how predictable it was.
Also, write a script, show it to us. I bet we can pick out shit that’s been done hundreds of times before. Oh and try your best to avoid the copyrights, since it’s really fucking hard to get past those things too to get original.
The story needed a character for the audience to relate with. The above statement is true. It could have been Denzel Washington and it would have been the exact same. The story could have been written in reverse, with the aliens coming to earth to destroy us or move us or whatever, but it would be harder for the audience to relate to the aliens. Either way, people would look into too deeply, relate it to some text book they had to read in college and call BS/racism/someotherdiscrimination. It was a social commentary, but I think it was more a “look at what we are becoming” deals, and not a “look how fantastic white people are!”
i don’t understand how people can look past the glaring similarities between the humans in the movie and ourselves but go right to make believe racism. we are currently polluting our planet on unimaginable levels and any respect we once had for nature has diminished almost to nothingness. This is very much a look at where we could be in the not so distant future if we continue doing what we’re doing.
just be thankful it wasn’t a sob story showcasing how badly we destroyed and shit all over our planet, because it easily could have been for the first hour.
It wasn’t the greatest film but IMHO I think this is one of the few cases where technical achievement just really outclasses and elevates it more. Forget about the 3D popping in general, IMHO I felt that after hour 1 your eyes get adjusted to the 3D effects and comfortable with it all. If it was Cameron’s goal to make a 3D film that didn’t hurt your eyes after 20 minutes, he certainly acheived it.
I have 3 complaints at the most aside from the average story.
This is actually more my fault than anything else, the 3D isn’t as spectacular if you’re range of vision isn’t totally immersed. I usually sit back a bit further but in this case being able to see the borders of the screen sort of ruined the 3D effect a bit. Sort of makes me want to see the film at either IMAX or else a little dead mid front row center next time to see if there is any difference. Aside from that it sort of makes it look not as 3D WOW FUCK as much as most people see it.
Uninspired cast. I think this was on purpose, but a lot of the characters just didn’t click. They were cliches to a great degree which made sense. Perhaps my favorite was the badass general just because he was so badass. However with the range of talent you have, I’m surprised that the characters didn’t come out from each actor’s presense. I mean I look and I don’t see a coporate slimeball but I just see Giovanni Ribisi playing one. I don’t see a scientist I just see Sigourney Weaver playing one.
In some respect this worked to their advantage because you wanted to created a less of an attatchment to the human acting and more to the technical achievement and the 3D models. I haven’t been more interested in the 3D character than the human character since probably Dragonheart.
Grace Avatar is just a blue Sigourney Weaver. I don’t know if it’s because Weaver’s face is just so more recognizable, but when I saw her avatar, it was like they decided not to fucking change anything. Ever other avatar or Navi did look cat like or alien in some respect, even Jake’s look similar but different enough not to be confused with him. However Weaver’s just stuck out like a sore thumb. Not entirely bad but wearing that Stockton shirt only kinda emphasized how little alien she resembles to the rest of the cast.
Other than that, it’s a pretty amazing film. It really goes to show how fucking amazing live action or near photorealistic 3D is when you have control over every single aspect of 3D material from the smallest blade of grass. Nothing looked out of place, even in 3D model with human interaction although IMHO a lot of that seemed to be fixed by having masks and covered mech suits to blur the difference between the 3D lighting and real life lighting. Regardless, you absolutely forget at one point that this was motion caputred and 3D because the movements look so natural for this alien species.
It certainly isn’t the best film and I sometimes question the hype of it’s relevence to the industry but IMHO I feel that in some ways Cameron had done better than Titanic by sheer ambition and payoff. It might be a shame because Titanic’s success was a result of luck considering it’s atypical concept, but we’ll have to see how lucky Avatar is in light of what sort of boundaries it’s trying to push.
