Way before that, but FPS definitely did play a role. Remember when Thresh won Carmack’s Ferrari? Quake III was so hype back then. Everyone wanted a piece of it. Then came UT, and then Counter Strike. That was basically game over.
The Japanese however didn’t really jump on the FPS bandwagon.
I’m really sick of all this worship/hatred of players. Polarization is good, it adds drama and hype, but sometimes people take it too far.
I mean, I understand, you have your cute little EvW and USAvWorld rivalries, which is just precious to those of us who graduated highschool. But when it comes down to it, they are both great players.
I was personally rooting for JWong because I feel he gets a lot of undeserved flak for being a bit cocky, and because although he is the top US player, he was the “underdog.” But I’m not going to take anything from Daigo for his victory, it was an awesome display, and anyone who thinks Daigo went easy on him, or Daigo sucks and only won because of DP must ot have a soul, because if you could feel the electricity, whether you were their or watchingthrough the stream, you would know how amazing, and real that match was.
Anyone who dares imply Daigo is anything other than an utter beast and a bona fide Street Fighter legend is an idiot.
Anyone who dares imply Justin didn’t give Daigo a run for his money and/or is anything less than the best US player and a true champion is an idiot.
And for now, history has proven that Daigo > Justin.
What else is there to say? I absolutely loved the Justin Vs Daigo match. It was awesome. Absolutely awesome and a little sad because I’m never going to play as well as those two.
There are two ways of looking at it with regards to the relative size of next year’s pool of players.
On one hand, this could have motivated a lot of new players to come out. On the other hand, it could have turned a lot of people away when they realized how high the bar is. It’s kind of like people said about yeb and jibbo’s Gens spawning a bunch of random XBL Gens. Most of the Gens are gonna quit when they realize just how much execution it takes to do the stuff yeb and jibbo do. It’ll be interesting.
No, did you watch Daigo play at all? Do you know what Daigo does in games he plays? Everyone around me during the finals knew what Daigo was doing, and thats why Wong played Abel and Balrog the way he did.
Yes, because I’m some scrub who doesn’t know what he’s doing, going to Evo and actually knowing what’s going on and discussing it with people around me.
I think it becomes bigger. People main notion was the fear that CvS 2 turned into … a pool of copy cats. It was good to see variety. I was please to barely see sagats or seths… i think the ability to know once you train an get yourself straight u can make it out there. the gens may dwindle but i think they may come harder with those wanting to prove something like i bet the sudden love for akumas an sakuras will happen.
I pray it does advance to a higher level… coming from the ol school arcade days it would mean a lot. I am very very happy wit the 1000+ turnout an hope to god it reaches 2 gs. We need the support an the exposure an i hope it gets there… an i hope this match justin had will make the japanese come again in FULL force so we can really see what is up.
also im tired of everyone trying to examine WTF was going on in the match as if they are ESPN analyst an shyt. It was a match that was wonderful in all fashion… the art of footsies, character knowledge, aggressiveness, timing…etc. those that ENJOY the SF game shouldve enjoyed this match simple… not sitting back why they did what they did or if someone held back or if it was rigged…WTF is up with todays way of thinking.
Tell me why? This one liner shit ain’t going to fucking work.
Are you guys just mad I’m hating on Daigo? Here, I’ll give him some credit, he knows the match ups for aggro boxer, but at times totally didn’t know what to do versus Justin a handful of times. It was only when Justin messed up Daigo got the DP into ultra, and worked off of that.
That part was (partially) sarcasm. I have no idea why people think Daigo is some god really. He gets styled on a ton of times in Japan, and was free versus Art. I do admit Daigo was a god in Vampire Hunter and Alpha 3, he was just too good in those games.
