Watch Gootecks interview with Daigo. Daigo says he played a metric shit ton of Balrogs…highly skilled ones on top of that.
I wonder if Justin is going to start leveling up Balrog as his main in preparation for SBO.
You’re right that it would appear Daigo is unfamiliar with Balrog, but in a post-finals interview he said that he did in fact have a ton of experience against him. It was just the fact that Justin took him to a whole new level. And to say that Daigo beat him clean is clearly a misunderstanding. Justin was down to almost 0-2 in previous sets and he still came back. It was completely unpredictable and could have gone both ways.
My personal opinion was that he thought Justin had already faced so many Akumas in the previous matches. He needed to change things up. I’m probably wrong, though.
agreed

Hi,
I have not read this thread.
However, it is my understanding that some people have posted here the idea that Daigo was sandbagging for the entire match, and all of Wong’s wins were because Daigo let them have them.
This is catastrophically retarded. Post less.
What this guy said.
greatest EVO finals ive ever seen. It was a great way to finish the 1st year of SF4. I am looking forward t both those guys leveling their play and meeting each other again next year.
i bet justin levels a cammy or fei now. lol
Question: Is it just me or were both Gootecks and Mike Ross big let-downs at Evo? I mean, they kept bragging about how amazing they were and it CLEARLY didn’t show at Evo.
Personally, I think Puerto Rican Balrog showed he had both a better Rog and Honda than the two of them. AND he isn’t a media whore. I feel this way because for the past couple weeks their self-praising really irritated me. And I’m not alone in this notion; clearly the crowd at Evo who were chanting “Gootecks sucks” agree with this notion as well. That wild-card team would of done much better had it not been for Mike Ross’s losing streak.
“Food for thought”
link?
Have to admit, this tournament was a great event, I dont think I will miss 2010 if im still on the planet.
P.S.
What was up with all the Gootecks hate in the stream? The chat was totally hilarious
that shit was epic. i thought jwong would hav did a wake up headbutt cuz daigo kept jumping in after he knocked justin down. Then i thought justin was gonna do turn around punches from all the fireballs daigo threw out. great match all in all
Quote that “the great ones” find it boring, please.
Infighting in this game isn’t terribly exciting because you’re playing scissors paper stone with the same bunch of moves (jabs, throw, invincible move, block), and you generally win an advantage by guessing 1 move correctly. The timing to make that decisions never varies- just during (your or your opponent’s) reversal window or a little after).
Footsies are waaaaay more exciting because the situation is a lot more fluid. What might’ve been the right move to throw 1/10 of a second ago probably isn’t anymore, depending on whether the opponent decided to move backward forward or throw a move. The variation in timing and distance occur so fast that the decisions you need to make need to come many many times faster than they do when you infight.
How is a skill set that “requires actual foresight and deep knowledge to execute” NOT fun?
This needs to be stickied. Youtube fighters are just too funny.
Now, I’m not a Daigo fanboy, but I do believe that Daigo was just playing Justin to some extent. I don’t think you can say Daigo is unfamiliar to the Balrog matchup. He put down Gootecks in a money match 3-0 (this is not a rumor, Gootecks posted it as his status on facebook). So unless Justin’s Balrog is stronger than Gootecks’ Balrog, I really think Daigo had the match won the whole time.
Lets not forget that the famous Daigo Parry video against Justin was also well played and set up by Daigo. If you look 10-20 seconds or so before the parry, Daigo was the one that purposely set Justin up with the meter. Just food for thought.
The finals match was insane between diago and wong, doesn’t get any intenser than that…gotta give wong his credit due, he was giving diago a run for his money with boxer but diago stayed calm and focused and adjusted to wong’s boxer and came out on top with the win.
by the way, when does the dvd go on sale ?
Video of this somewhere? Thought Kuroda was invincible!?
I think Gootecks are Ross are overrated.
Perez was vastly more impressive with both his Balrog and E.Honda.Man,that guy is going to be a player to watch in the future as he’s got the skills to be top 5 in the US.
That’s EXACTLY what I told my gf watching with me. Justin was putting on quite a show but he needs to be able to control his emotions. Going up higher than heaven after he sent Daigo into losers only made the crash that much more noticeable. Daigo was definitely disturbed by the Boxer pick but you can could almost SEE him reformulating everything he knew about street fighter 4 at that very moment. No emotions, just making plans to win. That’s what needs to happen if Justin ever hopes to beat Daigo, but I know him and the EC guys just arent those kinds of players.
Also, I wish EdMa had put up better results. Things might have been different if he hadn’t tried to counter pick with Zangief. He shoulda gone with Ken if he didn’t want to use Akuma @_@
Too hype! Match was way too hype >=d
Let’s give you the benefit of the doubt and say that the Japanese scene is more highly skilled. Even so, the US is Bush League? Are you frakking nuts? I don’t like his lack of sportsmanship, but Justin Wong’s play is to respected, son. As for everyone else in the US, they all brought their A game. Did I see you in the finals? In the Semi-finals? If not, then kindly stfu.
The match was incredible, it was epic.
I was rooting for Daigo but I have no hate whatsoever for Wong. In fact I respect the guy for being able to face off with Japan’s to players like he does. I just think he came across just a tad bit cocky and he shouldn’t have celebrated early either. I had my doubts but as soon as Wong stood up in between sets and I saw Daigo just sit there, serious… I knew it was his game.
Daigo vs. Justin was amazing. Probably one of my many favorite matches in EVO to watch.
@OP
That match was FUCKIN’ AMAZING - I don’t think I’ve never been that amped watching anything before.
Shame Justin lost tho after picking USA Wearing Balrog tho… I was feelin’ all patriotic and shit when he picked that char. GOTTA GET THAT FIGHT MONEY
And I wish JWong would keep mid-match celebrations to a minimum - it made him look like kind of a tool when he lost.
Oh god, can everyone especially the 09ers drop the shit about Diago letting Wong win anything. Wong earned every round and every match he won period.
