J.Wong vs Daigo

I think he jumped so much cause wongs footsies game with rog was better than ryu. His crouching roundhouse is very fast daigo knew that and decided that was the best thing he could do.

I have to agree totally. JWong acted like a baby when he pulled out that first ultra to win a round. To keep it in perspective, he did ultra Daigo, but come on, show some class.

Besides, EdMa had his ass in the losers bracket, and JWong nearly didnt even appear in the finals!

Sometimes when you accomplish something unimaginable you have to express your energy somehow. I really don’t think that Justin was trying to taunt Daigo. It was more like him trying to psyche himself up and express his level of energy.

I know it sounds like I’m trying naively to defend Justin. But I’m just going off of the fact that he has repeatedly said he respects Daigo and has always shook his hand after their matches.

Did you guys see when Rikimaru beat Kuroda at SBO last year? He jumped out of his chair and screamed like crazy, too. Hell I would, too if I beat Kuroda at SBO!

The matches were gold regardless of outcome. I was rooting for Justin, but was not disappointed to see Daigo take it in the end. The fantastic back-and-forth gameplay really made it, I was jumping out of my seat when justin pushed it to that last set. I imagine there will be a lot more boxer and akuma players after this, hopefully I won’t look like I’m jumping on the bandwagon (I already main them), but I don’t really care because it’s hard not to be inspired by the excellent boxer play we saw this weekend, especially justin and eduardo. I enjoyed watching evo all weekend on the stream, but damn, the SFIV finals REALLY make me want to head out to vegas next year. Anyone in the Dallas area up for a road trip? hahaha

I know it was more about psyching himself up but it still looks really bad on us.

unliike the gamespot tournment against mike ross, this was to hype himself and the US crowd behind, and not to taunt Diago.

I got where your coming from, but when so much is at stake, it just shows immaturity to react so vehemently to something that may not matter in the long run. Daigo is a proven champ, and part of that is him always maintaining his composure.

Emotions can give you an edge in combat, but it can also cause one to make reactive moves as well, leading to mistakes, and eventually, to a loss.

Yeah I think Azrael’s right when he says that it’s not that Daigo doesn’t have Boxer experience, it’s more that he doesn’t have Wong Boxer experience. But that again, how many people do? I don’t think many people have seen Boxer played like that. I hope this is going to lead to a resurgence of the footsie game in SF4. Most good players already utilize it, but too many of the super-combo era gamers (besides 3S) underestimate it’s importance.

Yup this is exactly it. He needs to approach these types of matches with a different attitude if he wants to get over his Diago white whale.

We all know this was an exciting match by far, but i will say that Daigo composure during matches and the ability to stay stoic is the reason why he is a well respected and world class player. I understand Wongs excitement and the need to get hyped up, but getting up in a middle of a match was a bit much.

this match was really intense.
Daigo really caught up and adapted to Wong’s boxer at the end.
He always manages to do this haha.
good game to Justin though, he definitely improved,
either that or Daigo doesnt have enough US Balrog experience.
another intense match was Edma vs. Rahsaan, sick comeback.
i just didnt like how he tried to counter pick against wong using Gief.
i think he wouldve had him with akuma.

Best EVO finals I’ve ever seen.

Great show from both Daigo and J.Wong.

And for those thinking J.Wong was being disrespectful or whatever with his cheering, I think in this case it was just him trying to hype himself up and feed off the crowd rather than trying to psyche Daigo out or whatever.

Good point.

I think he and Mike Ross are friends so it was probably all in just good fun. But yeah, you’re right about the GameStop tournament. In fact he was being so nice to the crowd that he stuck with Rufus.

You’re definitely right about that. But in some ways Daigo maintains his composure too much. In other words, Daigo is on the extreme end of composure, lol.

Yeah, lol. Daigo must have been like “So *this *is how you play Boxer? Everybody in Japan has got it all wrong.”

I don’t think they underestimate it, it’s just boring to most players, even the great ones. It takes a unique level of dedication to utilize footsies as a main form of offense, especially if the best footsies aren’t cancel-able or spam-able, requiring actual foresight and deep knowledge to execute.

After a while you just wanna get in and infight.

I’m glad Daigo had a chance to set the record straight on Wong’s Rog.

LOL, man, when Eduardo peaked with boxer coming up thru the ranks before the top 8 was way better than the JWong boxer in the final. Although you could argue, he played less skilled opponents.

America"s favorite character vs Japan’s favorite character

America’s best vs japan’s best

whatever you think of daigo and justin, you have to admit this was an epic fight.

man can IGN get these videos up already haha.

great stuff by both players. a lot has been said about wong’s antics during the fight. i didnt have a problem with most of it, but i did think it was disrespectful to leave in between rounds 2 and 3 and made diago wait. I found it fitting he ended up losing that next round. The pressure also seemed to be getting to both a bit as they both missed combos that are all but automatic for them. but the overall level of play was outstanding! great finals

That last match was simply epic. By far the most enjoyable EVO match I have watched to date.

Forget that.

J.Wong is not Japanese. J.Wong is not from Japan. He doesn’t have to act all quiet and composed to give a sense of humbleness.

Justin had what? 2000 american…US citizens cheering him on chanting his name and USA. He was repping hard for the US.

It’s one thing to be ignorant of another culture and step on toes doing so but you guys are being ignorant of your own culture. We aren’t Japanese.
