I watch all the matches, and you’re right that in the last TRF Boxer did have a good showing, but he’s still not as popular in Japan as in America. I think people are just underestimating how popular Boxer is in the states.
I agree with this… Wong’s footsie game was on point throughout their set. I think Daigo is more used to Rogs TAPing and using EX dash punches and overheads to set up their offense. Still, good job to him on adjusting on the fly.
betting against daigo = never good
on my planet, the winner won.
I can give him a nod, he’s a good player.
But then I have never criticized his playing.
I only criticize his unnecessary and constant douchebaggery.
Because Wong markets himself as a rockstar or something
you may be right. but if he switches mains for a while, and puts in some serious time with boxer, i like his chances. i cant wait till the vids come up on youtube or whatever.
justin missed a hell of a lot of combo opps, and generally missed a lot of shit. he kept the match close just from footsies, and AA cr.RH. i could see that match being very lopsided in favor of justin if he sharpened his boxer game a lil bit.
He might be more popular in the states that’s true.
I was just answering to the people saying there wasnt any good rog player in Japan
know what else made me very happy… the diversity of character choices and adjustments. no flooding of sagats or seths… a mix of different characters… akuma showin mix ups… saw some el fuertes… cammys… man. I am pleased to see SF gettin its shine at such a level. I heard random people from the casino was stragglin in just to watch… come on ESPN…someone. get this out there.
And that’s exactly where I got it from
Probably one of the best match sets I’ve ever seen. Eventhough I did not attend evo just watching it live really was a pleasure. I won’t lie though, I think Daigo was amazing to be able to play in what looked to be the biggest pressure on a player I’ve EVER seen. Just was sooo close to beating Daigo. By no means was Justin free, he put everything he had down. Much props to him, SF4 has been proven to be an amazing game. :wonder:
Oh even if you watched the live stream I encourage you to sign up for the IGN vids. Not only do you get the evo vids but you actually get to be an IGN insider. Whats amazing about this is it’s only 15 bucks which is equal to how much you would’ve paid to be an IGN insider alone. This is also a fraction of what DVD’s use to cost. Please support the scene by doing so.
Best post in this thread. Someone that knows how to play footies saw why daigo went poongko focus attack happy. His only way to beat justin was scoring big damage on focus attacks because justin was out footies daigo with rog. Very smart by daigo if you ask me. Everyone saw how justin beat ed ma GIEF using superior footies with rufus against a 4-6 match up disadvantage for rufus.
The only thing I see that is different in the usa players game and the japanese players game in sf4 is a BETTER understanding of using the focus attack as apart of their footies game. Its not far apart either imo, but other than that we CAN compete against them. Great try justin! You’ll get them at sbo shawty! Great job to everyone in the top 8! You gave us a show no one will forget!
QFT (-ego). That match was top tier in abilities. Perhaps even a milestone SF4 match, showcasing just about every aspect on SF4 and fighting game techniques.
The real is though will this be enough to win over 3S players?
parry mode engaged
who the hell was the annoying ass chick you could hear yelling every now and then on the stream during the matches? or maybe it was a 10 year old boy or something. goddamn she/it was distracting, Daigo should of gotten up and dp’d her back a few rows.
great finals indeed, justin played awesome but daigo clinched it. evo seemed pretty crazy and watching the stream and watching several matches it seemed everyone was having execution problems.
I was entertained watching the two matchups, Wong and Daigo were amazing!
Well played by both of these incredibly talented players! After watching this EVO streamed, I’m going to try my best to go watch this madness in person next year!
So sik!!!
Yeah, I really wanted the Chun Li that faced Daigo on his first match to at least advance further from there. He might have lost but he played very well.
On the topic, I gotta tell that from my Greek point of view, Justin was acting like he was a wrestler and every time he was getting up, I had reccuring images of celebration from the ring corner.
And LOL at someone’s comment “you could slice the tension with a katana” cause he hits the spot. Brilliant final.
Justin played that shit Super fucking Turbo style: Mind Games, Normals, and pokes.
I fucking hate Justin Wong, but he surely reached down and pulled out all the stops. He wasn’t holding anything back.
@Daigo Focus cancelling: Countless people have said it before but yes, Daigo was doing that because of Justin wanting to play Footsies. Sure He looked goofy a couple times, but look how much Daigo was able to catch justin with a focus crump into a big damage combo? (Some of which he missed to cost him the round, imo).
I was also fascinated at how broken down the game became. It was so intense, both players were saving meter for supers, for hit confirms off their pokes. Maybe it’s premature, but I think that match may have shifted the Meta-Game of SF4.
if he used ex dashes more, he wouldn’t have meter to hit all those supers
Great vid and congrats to Daigo for yet another powerful showing of Ryu. The next the time tournament rolls around, Daigo should come in cleanly shaved of the beard, wearing a Gi and sporting a headband. Justin clearly had a nasty Boxer going (had all the BnBs down), but isn’t this just a bad matchup for Rog?
The Ryu vs. Boxer matchup is more akin (specifically to SF4) to charge vs. non-charge characters (ihmo). Ryu can FA, dash and still have his complete arsenal of attacks available to him. Boxer can FA, but he loses most of his special moves (yes there is a video on how to keep, but the timing is very tight) immediately.
Managed to come back in time to see the last few matches (Ed Ma vs Justin) then Justin vs Daigo.
Definitely an intense match and I thought for sure it would of have been a repeat when Daigo sent Justin to the loser’s bracket.
Quite surprised to see how out classed his Rufus was against Daigo’s Ryu. Yeah, I know this is Daigo and yea I don’t expect anything less of him but he just out footsied his Rufus and just beat him down with the basics. Nothing particularly fancy.
Can’t say any of the match ups did anything particularly fancy it was just solid plays with the basics and just excellent reactions. The whole match ups seemed mroe mental then anything else. I can’t imagine what was going through Daigo’s mind during those moments. A lesser man would have crumbled under the pressure. Considering he’s coming to a foreign country, everyone in the audience was cheering against him, you have a surprise match against Balrog who seems to be doing significant damage to your game and an over cocky player who is playing up the crowd. Yet he didn’t even show the slightest hint of being under pressure. He remained clam and continued to play like the champ that he is.
I’m not a Justin Wong fan but I give him props for his unorthodox choice of Boxer and then winning multiple matches with the basic fundamentals on top of some very good predictions and punishes. The footsie work between the 2 was incredibly and a lot of that was mental. The pressure had to be getting to the 2 as both of whiffed several things and missed out on good punish opportunities. It just shows the pros don’t have 100% execution all the time.
