I've covered wars y'know - Frank West thread

No need to react like that honestly, no one’s trying to talk down on you  would you say hawkeye’s triple arrow is a good enouggh way to end snapshot blockstrings? I’ve been making a habit of ending them in L.ToS or Light Zombie Throw (qcb) but our community’s kinda bad at punishing so that may be why I get away with it. I shouldn’t have to worry about it much because all my nova really needs is one clean hit (any clean hit, really, as long as I don’t mess things up) to give me level 5 frank (unless I got the hit from a shopping cart punish/mixup, then I can only get level 4) but even then sometimes things don’t go according to plan and I’m left with level 1 frank + hawkeye vs another team. Got any idea?

New to Frank West here. Been using Spencer/Frank/Doom and a clean hit from frank assist or spencer will land me at least lvl 4 frank, usually lvl 5.
I use Hidden Missile Assist with Doom for Spencer ToD combos. If Spencer dies and I’m left with level 1 Frank and doom, a combo with hidden missiles can get me to lvl 4 pretty easily.

My concern is when Spence dies and I’m left with Frank/Doom. Hidden Missile assist is good for combos and controlling a bit of the flow, but doesn’t help much in making my strings safe when I need them to.
I know most of his specials aren’t safe to end block strings with because they are either slow to recover or slow to start up, so how safe are his :m: and cr. :m:s?
Is cr. :l: a low hit?

Lvl 1 frank I usually just jump around with air :m:s and air ToS:l: to fish for hits and works out pretty well.

His slide is his only normal that hits low. What I’ve been doing for level one is ground string into slide xx hammer throw L. It’s not perfect but it’s a great frame trap and if somebody trys to do anything but block you can follow up with another slide into a full combo most of the time. Off of a low air throw forwards you have enough time for a low jump ToS H into combo and you can option select air throw and knee drop with :df::h:.

Might be worth going for a knee drop when missiles are out there for a relaunch. Might be able to do something like knee drop > call missiles > cart super and find some way to combo off the missiles if you can find a way to work it out. If that works you might be able to do that for his back throws too since you only have time for a cart super after them.

O dang, not even cr :m: hits low? That kinda sucks lol, I guess I lose to chicken block when it’s just frank/doom left. I’ll try out throw -> missiles ->cart super to see if I can get anything off it, but I judging from the horizontal space cart super covers I’m not sure if it’ll work. Good idea on the throw stuff tho. I already have a regular missiles combo that gets me to level 4 so no worries there.

Yeah, It might only be at midscreen or corner, but it would look pretty stylish if it does work. Lol. If it can connect somehow, you probably even have time to even snap while missiles hits and then relaunch.

Snapshot outside of combos is a pretty fraudulent tactic.

It’s massively unsafe(~ -25), both on hit-vs-grounded and on block. A tactic working because your opponent is ignorant of it’s glaring weaknesses doesn’t make it a good tactic.

Pretty much the only time you should be using it, is in a gimmicky setup for ~1/2 screen hit confirms(i.e., call Log Trap assist, small delay, Fish for a safe hit with Snapshot -> Logtrap hits, etc).

There’s no safe way to get around the fact that L1 frank is pretty free to strong ranged games.

Lol it’s like you didnt even read what i said at all but niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. And im 100% sure the people i play are probably more knowledgeable about Frank then…well most Frank players lol.

I dont have a problem getting in on most zoning characters, some are pretty bad but most are doable. Trish isn’t too bad once you get 1 Giant Swing out you can get more due to frame advantage…the only matchup i’ve played against where i literally felt like i couldnt do anything was zero. Then again im pretty sure im the only person that really even attempted to learn how to play Frank in all levels.

^ You’d be incorrect. I’m sure plenty of people understand Frank at all levels. I know him very well. Enough to know snapshot is terrible, across the board. It’s -27 on block, and -25 on hit. No hitbox can compensate for that.

You get punished hard for using it, @ the 29 minute mark in the video you provided. If you want to keep doing it, that’s cool and all. But my post wasn’t for you. It was so everyone else understands the disadvantage snapshot puts you at. Frametrapping with an assist after any other move would be just as effective, and you’d have considerably more time to apply pressure withoutthat fat -27 disadvantage.

I may make a Frank tutorial at somepoint… but I’ve been busy with High Impact Dante stuff. By the by, you should really put Dante on point, on your team. That’s almost a given.

edit: Punished again for using it, at the 33:30 mark. So, I mean, it’s not like we can say the people you play aren’t punishing it. They are.

The combo at 34 was mint, though. You get that from my youtube channel?

;D

I have to agree with Mercurial when it comes to strong zoning teams. I played Morrigan/Strange/Doom and Joe/Doom/Strider teams when I still mostly used Frank on point. Believe me when I tell you that getting in is near impossible with level 1 Frank and still very tough at higher levels. I do have to say though that even with it long recovery time, snapshot can be effective at level 1 for hit confirms off of slow hitting assists like Doom hidden missiles or Sentinel drones assists.

Lol im not into posting wars, i’ll see everyone at FR.

We can play for money to see who know more about Frank. Words mean nothing to me, and i’m not good and sitting down and theoryfighting. I’d rather play.

And thats not toward any one person either lolllll

lol, winning with Frank != knowing more about Frank. Plenty of people are proficient with a character and hardly know the ins and outs of them. And if people are willing to throw caution to the wind and do Frank money matches kudos to them, I’d never put money down on a coin flip of who gets him leveled first (or at all).

for example, noel brown does not have the best frank, but he would still beat us all :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess some people stick to theory fighting and others stick to experienced competitive play. At the end of the day, my money is on the guy with more experience than the guy who can do flawless theory fighting.

Regardless I still don’t like Frank west on point. Frank/Dante/X vs Dante/Frank/X will both have combos that level to 5 probably, but I think it’s obvious which one will have an easier time finding an opening against a majority of the cast.
I guess it’s between whether you want to take the risk of trying to level up frank with frank so if you fail, you still have 2 strong characters VS if you fail to level up frank with your point character, then you are stuck with lvl 1 frank and 1 strong character.
If you have a strong lvl 1 Frank, I don’t see why you wouldn’t opp for the latter really.

Theoryfighting (in my opinion at least) is good for having more presence of mind on strengths/weaknesses and exploring alternative solutions/approaches to enhancing your game. That said, if you get too deep into it eventually becomes pointless, and if it doesn’t have a practical/executable solution then it didn’t solve anything. Helps some, but not everybody.

And I agree Fiddle, I made a similar post on one of the different topics about 1st vs 2nd Frank. The most important thing to take away from it though, whether we like it or not, is that Frank comes with an element of risk and can very easily become a liability. With more knowledge/practice the risk might be worth the reward if your goal is to make Frank the focus (whereas for Noel it’s more of a secondary park), but right now I don’t think it’s there as much as I enjoy the character.

The goal of this thread: Be a better Frank player than Noel Brown.

dont know if its known yet, but franks st.h can cross incoming opponents, say if a character is killed by frank, just dash neutral h and confirm hit or go for a high low mixup, but dont know if it works against mashers though -_-

thats kind of like the skrull st. H crossup. but without the massive hitbox.

So yeah i’ll be at FR if anyone wants to play so we can compare Franks whether its for money or not.

All that matters to me is how well you can perform in a match with the character so yes i do see Noel Brown as the best Frank atleast in the U.S.)

Justin Wong apparently won WNF using Felicia/Nova/Frank. I’m extremely curious about the matches

Justin Wong’s Felicia/Frank is really insane. I saw his Felicia/Frank/Storm earlier on but he had the issue of not having a strong way to level frank up so I assume that was the reason for the switch. Mixups, overheads, and command grabs make for some broken shit. I’m gonna have to see if I can find the match vids for the new team tho…
