"It's a good day to die!" T. Hawk Match-up/Strategy Thread

told you about that fuerte, if people werent so lazy n realized his amazin potential you would see more of him that ryu cuz yea he is better. you heard it here first. fastest character in the game with the most mixups neutrally and after a knockdown… and a grappler with massive damage? baka. im gona make him my secondary lol my friend says he and thawk are from the same tribe anyways so it is only right.lol jk

Don’t know if its been brought up before but if Guile does his sweep within typhoon range after you block the first you can nab him with a typhoon for a great punish instead of trying to focus absorb it and hope Hawks bad dash lets you do something.

I played a bunch of matches last night and really tried to use the lp typhoon–results were good. Lp typhoon, crossup splash, jab into tick lp typhoon if block. noncrossup splash, cl.mp xx lp/mp tomahawk (assume quick recovery) jump to splash, jab into either far.lk (buffered spire) or cl.mk (buffered spire) right back into jabs for tick throws, or buffered super/ultra/etc.

When you start dizzying opponents as t.hawk people start to scratch their heads. This kind of stuff can make BIG comebacks happen.

Also, splash, st. jab, cr. jab into super and ultra will destroy people if you can get into their heads and force them to block a lot of attacks/destroy their jumping game.

Ibuki–that ibuki mixup game can be rough but you just have to block for days. Also, I completely punted a kunai with both st.RH and st.HP and it was so hilarious we had to pause the game. t.hawk doesn’t take crap from little ninja girls. watch for that neckbreaker crap. spd jump ins that hit high cause those are freeeeeeeeee.

Guile–ugggghhh. Finally got some rounds in with a really good guile, this one is tough, as i expected. I could win maybe 1 out of 4 or 5 rounds. Didn’t win a match. Gonna need way more time with this matchup. but, fwiw, neutral j. fierce moves hawk’s body over sonic booms pretty well and can stuff guile sometimes, a bit like honda’s neutral j fierce (but definitely not as good). focus absorbing sonic booms is a mixed bag. the lp SB follow with jumping kick can hit your backdash if they space it correctly (of course, this would lose to ex spire) and your forward dash from the focus doesn’t go far enough to pass under guile. hawk dive loses to flash kick and most jump ins will lose to his AA punch or air throw. Early j.jab can beat the air throw and you can cancel into dive for mixup grab, but you’ll rarely end up in the correct spacing because you have to attack so early. After testing a bunch of these things I ended up sitting at fullscreen, absorbing SBs and then whiffing lp typhoon to build meter. ex. spire, i think, is your best tool in this matchup. his backfist punch beats a number of pokes and there will be roughly 25 to 30 sonic booms PER ROUND (yeah we started counting) against a hardcore zoner so I didn’t see a lot of option to be advancing in the footsies game. ex spire through SB into typhoon/ultra (don’t even think about having super) is the holy grail and I pulled it off once or twice but eventually a good guile won’t be throwing that crap out there at that range. Once you get in it’s a bit different and you can beat flashkicks all day with crossup splash. but then if you mess up or give guile a chance to jab string, mp(?) xx SB he’s suddenly out of your reach again. cr.HP can be pretty good at this distance. st. RH will beat a jump away and stuff some pokes but is just waiting to be crumpled by focus. so yeah… that’s all i got so far on this. Also, i recognize not all guile’s will play like this and that all the scrubby guiles online just do SB walk forward sweep, flash kick. i’m really looking for strats against the ruthless guile players.

i’m currently thinking turtle like a mofo, build meter with whiff lp typhoon (is this the best option to build meter???) and then blow it all on ex spire (possible/very probable do ex spire again for that T.Hawk Two-Step) and hope to god you land enough damage to then run away and force him to come to you.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but DF+LP stuffs all of Dhalsims limbs, air or ground, cleanly. It still isn’t easy to get to him because of teleport, but I did manage to beat a fairly competent Sim lasst night.

Thrust peak beats sims’ limbs? Finally a shred of something Ic an do against him.
Fire ball no problem, limbs hitting at a range more of a problem, but I can deal.
Getting my size 22’s and head sized hands stuffed by Indian Luffy? Not cool.

So played lots of T.Hawk yesterday and found that if i played a purely reactional game, I did so much better it wasn’t funny… Have a bunch of stupid tricks to get in at least one spd. I like to use the condor dive on fireballers, first let them throw a bunch and just jump over them until you can see a pattern of him continuously throwing them, if you time it right you can anticipate the next fireball and then dive attack them while they are recovering from the fireball, works well on ryu and ken even akuma.

If they see this starting to happen, they usually start to block so they can punish you, but if you can distance your dive just right you’ll whiff in front of them when they were anticipating a block and bingo, spd.

Once you do get a few licks in, back off and wait. if they jump, tomahawk… if they do get in and start a combo and you’re blocking, chances are you can reversal spd right out of their combo… maybe I wasn’t playing the best people but not many knew what to do once i wasn’t pushing the tempo but waiting for them to do something stupid or for the time to run out.

Chun-Li

Okay, does anyone else here freaking HATE chun-li? I know I do. She’s too fast, she’s the most gimmicky player in the game and she does way too much damage for her speed. Her combos are brain dead easy and, especially online, it’s difficult to react to her cross-up gimmicks. Oh yeah, and I almost forgot about her ridiculously high priority normals. How do you beat this girl with HAWK??? I’m having the toughest time with her.

Side note: I have to say HAWK is a beast. I think he is really underrated and I’m doing quite well with him at the moment.

There seem to be quite a few Chuns on there right now, some of them very deadly with Focus combos, and of course, the dreaded c.LK into… anything and everything.

But! If you can get that knockdown (like so many Hawk match-ups), she has to burn meter to get you off her. Swoop or dash back in, crouch block as she bust’s her EX SBK reversal, then s.HK, or start the cross up attempt into tick/grab or low hit into Tomahawk Buster. Once she’s out of bar, she’ll start mashing or jumping to escape your set-ups.

As for her cross-over HK move, you simply block the other way when you see it going over you, then she’s gonna be looking to combo in c.LK xx whatever, or walk in and throw. If she/the player is trying to land stronger normals off it, that’s your chance to start spinning or hitting EX TB. Hell, if you’ve got U1, she’s pretty much ticking herself into it.

If nobody has figured this out yet, T. Hawk’s crouching jab will beat out Blanka’s electricity every time, and I do mean EVERY TIME.

Other than that, I’m stumped on how to deal with Blanka.

Condor Spire beats horz. ball, but you have to do it really early. It’s not much, but it’s something. DF+lp beats a bunch of crap too. Other than that, I got nothin’.

Only thing I’ve observed is whoring c.jab and trying to tick into SPD if ever given the chance - it seems like electricity stuffs EX SPD but maybe I’m a retard.

Also can’t you just SPD a successfully blocked overhead flip kick?

If people didn’t know (I could just be slow), hp spire beats out Ibuki’s kunai. Could prove to be helpful.

After fighting GUY and getting trapper in the corner I realized that if if he goes for his running air grab thingy you can just dash forward, go under him and probably mexican srk him, surprise typhoon, punish with normal or wait to see what he will do most likely jab/hurricane kick.

Did you guys know if you suspect DEEJAY is going to slide, mexican typhoon or ultra 1 grabs deejay out of that crap don’t even have to wait for him to touch you. Also anybody have a better punish to his sobat (sideways kick)? I usually throw out the standing fierece but its 50/50 depending on the distance of the sobat.

Ugghhh… I hate practicing against online. Lag for some people is soo lame also having a Standard stick makes 360s/720s nightmares even after the buffer.

BTW…

Fck Blanka…

JUST SAYING

He is just in the game to piss people off.

In my playing so far it seems that most Melle characters like Fei Long, Makoto, etc have a really hard time vs hawk. What is tough I am starting to realize is that you have to really know how to punish people with 360 becuase his 360’s can be rediculous for punishing links. Has any one sat down and figured out the advantage for most characers yet if hawk blocks?

lol and im seeing that on xbl today where i went 21-0 with the hawk-man. a few noob players but i stole several hundred points from a few b ranked people. i think people just dont know how to play him so the cry like babies. had 2 rage quiters as well mid ultra. also pulled off a few 7 hit cross over combos as well. i swear those combos dont scale cause it took half the life bar! very nice .

you must be on psn. it a rarety on xbl

So, I just barely lost to a Bison that was almost did retreating Devil’s Reverse exclusively. Ugh. I hate that damn move. There doesn’t seem to be a way to reliably punish it, if only because anyone intelligent (not the guy I lost to, which annoys me more) could steer it towards you mid-air (which I kept expecting but never came to pass).

Bison goes to fucking high punish with anything mid-air. He goes even higher than the apex of Rising Tomahawk.

I’d just like to find a way to feel a little less dead inside if I have to deal with that type of bullshit again.

raging slash?

Hawk has to deal with a lot of bullshit like this thanks to his horrifically unsafe specials which are -supposed- to help him get in.

Bison is one of his worst matchups because s.hk stuffs the fuck out of anything and everything Hawk does. Your only saving grace is if he’s an idiot and does slide often which you can punish with SPD, or does a high strength scissor kick from a close distance.

I played against a Fei Long who just ran away the whole time and just couldn’t catch up to him. A turtling Honda or Blanka is really difficult too because you can’t punish headbutt or ball (but you can try to c.jab spam and stuff them).

CD hits Honda on top of the headbut as he’s coming toward you, but you can’t really consider that a reliable counter. You can, however, TB (EX I’m certain works) the Headbutt. CS will at least trade with Blank’s Horz. Ball…but you have to be early.
