"It's a good day to die!" T. Hawk Match-up/Strategy Thread

I played about 60-70% of the cast Vs Hawk now in both Ranked and Endless, and the one time I felt really helpless was against a very conservative Rose. No real chance to attack from the air at all, and zoned out on the ground constantly :frowning:
Perhaps back off to build meter and then try to EX Condor Spire through something into a grab might be valid next time I face this match-up?

He seems to being doing OK Vs Shotos, Dudley and Ibuki (both of whom are all over Live at the moment).
Kinda harsh on the little Ninja gal (who I’ve used myself for years in 3s) when I block a sliding grab, and get a 360/720 with all the time in the world to spin lol

gotcha reason i said it was cuz i knew one was gona try n grab me on wakeup, n i threw a reversal one and his still beat me clean it was lp. i assumed… and i was wrong.thanks for clearing that up. i need to train btw anyone wanna play with me, i only get to play on weekends really n i need some hyperbolic madness with me n some friends including my bros from home.

Abel has 5 frames command throw while T.Hawk’s SPD comes to 2 frames like Giefs.
So T.Hawk win.
BUT.
Abel’s command grab win all type grabs in game so if Abel goes to his extremely mix up game and buffer his command throw during his moves he’ll win every time.
Abel now has many tools against Zangief and T.Hawk.
His Ultra 2 beats always T.Hawk’s and Gief’s U1.So don’t try it when you see him do that infront of you.Better go for an EX Spire or a Dive to escape or to hit.
But once Abel knock down T.Hawk and go for a cross up mind game T.Hawk can have difficult times against him.
Maybe this match is even 5-5 or at worse at Abel’s favor 6-4.
I don’know yet.I have to search it more

Abel is easy if you can predict what he does. Once you get the players patterns, it gets very simple. I just try to space him out.

I think if Hawk has a consolidated matchup thread with spoiler tags for each character we would be better off as a community. It would also let us see what characters we haven’t been posting about.

I also second the rose difficulty. Her soul spark/air throw crap can be tough. also, her st.rh (?) goes about as far a hawk’s.

What he said…

kraig - i wouldnt mind starting the thread / contributing what I know later on tonight possibly

Did we cover the Bison matchup already? Bison fucking owns me - seems like everything he does beats everything I do, and I don’t even know WTF to do against Psycho Punisher.

edit: Also is there any way to punish Akuma’s teleport on wakeup?

is it just me or does cody’s ruffian kick stuff a lot of t.hawk’s moves?
i just played against a cody on ranked and could barely do anything without him using ruffian kick to beat me down

Yeah, it seems way more effective than in Alpha 3, and appears to beat Condor Dive clean. Try baiting it with short swoops and jumps just out of range, then s.HK when it whiffs, or if you’ve managed to jump over him, splash HP combo or 360/720.

Thoughts after actually playing Hawk in a tourny for the first time:

Viper is freeeeeeee
Balrog is a tough match. Make sure to find out quick if you’re fighting a Balrog that jumps, or one that doesn’t, because that makes drastic changes to the matchup.

yeah balrog does not fear hawk whatsoever
he can just straight rush him or buffalo headbutt if he tries anything
makes maining thunder hawk a pain when you run into a really good balrog(speaking of which i ran into a balrog player on psn named Bracy21 who says he’s never lost to a grappler so if anyone’s up to challenge him and see if they can break his streak go right ahead)

So going over the first couple of pages am I right to assume T. Hawk is a sh!t character? Figured I learn a new character while training with my new fight stick but all I see are bad match-ups listed. Only good one is Gief. He gets owned.

I think that would be good. So if you reserve the first 3 or 4 posts to update later we can have a simple place to tell everybody to go when they say lies like “omg, blanka rapes hawk”. A lot of the other character threads have that stuff so it makes sense hawk should too. and this could help people stop trashing him even though he will clearly be a feared by over half of the cast if you play the matchups correctly.

i’ve decided to start telling people not try to understand hawk so that then i’ll be the only one out there with him and nobody will know the matchup and his fantastic normals, great spacing game, sneaky mobility, strong focus attack, and huge punishes will destroy all my opponents. So yes, hawk is a crap character. He’s F tier. Utter garbage.

he’s not a shit character and as far i know
T.Hawk does have some bad matches
but he can go to toe to toe with shoto’s quite easily if you know what your doing
a lot of people may think he’s garbage and put him off as crap tier
but his damage output is crazy high and his stamina is tied with zangief for the most(1100)so he can afford to make a few mistakes but his opponents get no such luxury
because if you hit them with the mexican typhoon(H Version)just twice they’ll already be reeling in agony

you have to hit t.hawk several times before that happens to him

That is def one thing I’ve noticed while playing with him. I’m coming from playing as Akuma where mistakes are not acceptable. With this guy, being able to make mistakes and not be out of the game is pretty pleasing. Love his S.Hard Kick. Just got to practice these damn 360 and 720 moves!

t hawk is not garbage, especially in the right hands just learn the other character’s properties like if their rushing u and cannt 360 im pretty sure ex 360 will catch them, if they jump alot work on all anti airs like a close jumpin walk up just a little and st.mp and u have a couple options from there and far jumpin just st.rh. the main focus is to chip away damage and force them to come to u and thats were t hawk game came to play.

btw please practice those 360 and 720 moves alot

Yeah, I played against one and I got destroyed. He was able to punish all of the above with Rekka-Ken: S.RH, S.FP, whiffed SPD and CD. I wasn’t able to punish anything he did with SPD. Next time I’ll try different pokes, but you can’t win a whole match on jabs. Anybody have some info for this matchup?

El Fuerte seems to be a horrible match-up :frowning:

He seems like one of the fastest in the game, and once he gets a knockdown, he’s all over you at high speed from all angles, and you can’t really 360 or TB, plus, his flying leg grab thing takes Hawk out of both his air specials. Then, if you ever actually damage him and attempt a tick or cross up, his Ultra has a nasty habit of zeroing right in and taking biiiiiiiig damage.

On some of the other runaway chars like Juri and Vega, you can be patient and swoop in or grab a blocked poke or special, but this Crystal Meth Mexican chef dude against the lumbering Native Indian just feels like you’re playing SSF2 New Challengers, but have somehow suddenly warped into the world of MvC2!
