My Oni at Mage gaming…What do you guys think?

Edit: apologizing in advance for the voices in the background, some of those guys never really play ssf4ae 2012…but there are a few gems

Pick two bnbs and practice them. You were landing hits but you tried to combo cr.lp > cr.mp xx lk.slash a lot. Work on cr.lp > cr.lp > b+mp / st.mp xx lk.slash. Another good bnb is cr.lk > cr.lp > st.lp > tc2 xx hk.tatsu. Also you relied on oni’s mixup after lk.slash on block which is ok because it sets up Oni’s basic mixup. Your options after lk.slash are throw dp or mk.smash. The mk.smash loses to 3 frame normal crouch tech or just mash jab, and those options lose to throw so you should setup throw first and then move to smash later. You skipped that mixup and went straight to dragon punch which is hella risky. The psychology of that mixup is to fear the throw first and it sets up the smash which leads to safe jumps and free pressure. Your air mp. air dash xx mk.tatsu are easy to duck and punish so use sparingly.
You landed hits at will and maybe that’s your competition but it’s still a positive and you clearly understand how to move and control space enough to land attacks and force them to block now you have to make them pay for letting you hit them.

Thanks, i appreciate the advice and will work on it…hopefully it will show in my gameplay. On a sidenote, I noticed in one of shinochans matches he was doing blocked b.mp->karagrab( throw+ Fw.hp) anyone know any tips to doing this consistently? with just one stroke or motion on the fightstick?

P.s: What to do against run stop pressure from guy?

I feel like it’s harder to do a kara throw with f+fp than just st.hk or st.mk. I use st.mk cause it’s easier to plink and the distance difference is a half a block in the training stage. F+fp has better range but i feel like if you are using a stick that the plink is too unnatural. It’s all preference tho.
in regards to guy’s run stop pressure you have to understand his options. He can do 1 of 3 things when he’s running. He can stop sweep or go high with the double overhead. If you block the sweep or the overhead you can just do st.lk xx hp.dp. Your best bet is to block low because it’s harder to react to and easier to punish. His overhead is easy to react to he decides to use it instead of sweep. Take it to training mode to see the timing on the punish because it looks safe at first.

I’m not sure if it’s the good topic, but I’ve found this, unblockable vs Sagat:

sorry for quality ><

the oni section is alive again, YAY! ^^

This is very similar to Ryu, Akuma and E.Ryu’s tatsus that cross behind on a knockdown and hit you as a cross up. I’ve tested each version of Oni’s tatsu on all characters of the cast and have come up with these results. A couple of important notes to keep in mind about this set up and how i tested it:

  1. This set up only hits these characters if they stand block after the grab, crouching on wake up means all set ups whiff (i didn’t test if they could jump out of it or what reversals escaped/punished it).

  2. Although this set up may not leave you in the desired position in every situation, it could act as an escape as well as a gimmicky setup, say if you accidentally back throw and it lands yourself in the corner.

  3. I also haven’t tested these when you back throw your opponent into the corner.

Note: if anybody further tests the setup on these characters and discovers anything please post it, i will be very thankful !

Set up : After back throw -> forward dash -> Tatsu ( type of tatsu will be listed ! )

Balrog: Only Hk tatsu works

Blanka: Mk and Hk tatsu works

Chun Li: Only Hk tatsu works

Cody: Lk, Mk and Hk tatsu all work

Dhalsim: Lk, Mk and Hk tatsu all work

El Fuerte: Hk tatsu works

Hakan: Hk tatsu works but the hit is delayed, i suggest to test it out in training mode before using.

Juri: Mk and Hk tatsu work

Makoto: Hk tatsu works

Rufus: Mk and Hk tatsu works

Sakura: Mk and Hk tatsu work

Yang: Lk, Mk and Hk tatsu work

Yun: Lk, Mk and Hk tatsu work

Two different back st.mp meaty setups into u2:

Practical? Not really, not even sure how new it is or if at all.

I know Balrog has that weird hit property on Oni’s Tatsu so I tried this out to see if it worked. Figured I’d share, regardless.

Set I played with EMP|FNEX Mad Titan. Some sloppy points from both of us, but I thought it was a solid set overall. I’ve had a pocket Oni since day 1 of him dropping, and always enjoyed playing him, but tried to stick to my guns of other characters. Now, the game has gotten stale a bit to me, (see; a lot) and Oni is one of the few things/the character that makes it fun for me again, so I’m re-learning him from the ground up and taking him seriously.

Been a Sagat main since I can remember, and I’ll still play him as he’s my favorite SF character, but Oni is just so much more fun for me…

Here are the grand finals of a small tournament that I was in a couple of weeks ago. The dictator matchup seems so difficult, so if anybody could give me advice, I would really appreciate it.

loser’s finals from the tourney, but unfortunately, the whole match wasn’t recorded.

I’ve always struggled with Dictator in general as a player, but I especially feel he does alright vs Oni. Has good buttons, pressure, escape options so it’s difficult to OS and consistently shut him down, etc. (There’s a couple in the corner that do well vs him, but mid-screen it’s difficult imo)

I think going in when he has little meter is the best option, as his wake-up options are much much more limited and more prone to OS-ing them then opposed as to when he has meter. Frame trap him up close and make him scared to crouch tech as most Dictators love to do. Once you do that, (if you can manage to do that) then you open up the whole throw game and you can pressure him much more easily and play your game.

F.LK is good in the matchup imo, just to occupy space and counter-poke with in neutral. I haven’t played a ton of Dictators, but I also get some decent mileage out of S.MK in neutral as well from the ones that I play.

While I’ve had a pocket Oni since day 1 of his release, as far as explicitly maining him I’m only about a month and change into that process, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but hopefully it helps man.
