It is welcomed by me. I enjoy ‘characters’ and egos are very entertaining. Not in my behavior to talk mess, usually the opposite, but I don’t mind taking a harsh comment, whether it be directed at the game or myself, during/after/before a match (even better if it makes me laugh). Ridiculous stuff to spark up a crowd laughter is the best. The kind that has nothing to do with the game.
Just so long as I don’t get touched in anything other than a handshake or ‘pat’ during their verbal tyrade; otherwise I’m chokeslamming the fuck out of someone. Seriously. =)

trash talking is fun. i’m not good enough to talk trash when it comes to street fighter, yet, but the lan center where i play (my city won’t let any more arcades be built so that’s what we’re left with) is big on smash. i don’t even like that game, but it’s fun to beat people at something they take seriously and mock them for it, when you dabble at best.
it’s great for drawing competition, too. winning like a jerk means everybody wants a piece of you.
Just make sure it’s all in good fun. Keep the content of your trash talking to the game or event at hand. Saying, “You drop that combo, you need to hit training mode, son!” is ok, but “Dawg you’re weak, I should take your girlfriend.” is going overboard.
I personally like to do the “look”. It’s a stare-down of swagger at the opponent without saying a word. The “Look” works on friends and non-friends.
Yeah, a little FUNNY trash talk can be ok.

and I almost died laughing…that is the kind of “trash talk” that I think is fine.
