Is trash talking a negative thing?

trash talking is awsome! in my opinion it makes the game feel more reel…in my opinion i would rather get a msg like “fuck you stop doing that chaep ass shit you faggot!” than “gg”…booooring!

Talking trash is fun. Some people do, some people don’t. Like others have said, if you lose while talking trash, it’s far more embarrassing.

I think anyone who gets irritated over trash talk in a game has far too much invested in SF. If getting beaten by one player hurts your self-esteem, you need a reality check.

However, excessive post-match trash talk ruins the ability to say GG. Only scrubs need to rub in their victory, other players are happy with just winning. SF is the most fun when it’s social, and people need to understand the difference between being an asshole and good-natured taunting.

No beef, I simply want to highlight and explain SOME of the comments I agree with. it’s become painfully clear that the old school and new school of gamers will never see eye to eye (unless they are both mature enough to set aside their skewed perspectives).

Old school arcade players remember having to be humble about wins or even take a loss or making a match closer than it was just to avoid being jumped afterwards. That doesn’t make our experiences more relevant, it just explains why we nod and say ‘good game’ more times than not.

The new school has the luxury of anonimity so shooting your mouth off and being bragodocious comes with no real consequences. Take this forum…if it were discussed in an actual physical location and everyone was face to face, would half the insulting things ever be said? Again, it’s not necessarily a negative…it’s up to the new school to shape the image their generation will be remembered by and decide how they’re seem within the gaming community.

As for trash talking, there’s a classy way and there’s the crass way. An ESPN article I read wrote that when NBA players talk trash, it’s never along the lines of ‘you suck, bitch’ or ‘learn to play’ because it’s understood, if you’re in the NBA, you def DONT suck and CAN play. They’re idea of trash talking is more along the lines of ‘so, I heard you just missed the all-star team. Maybe next year’ in a sarcastic manner. Or ‘I just signed a new deal, 14mil a year…what did you get again?’.

Me personally? No trash talking. I’ll even tell a friend who keeps falling for the same trick that they’re being too predictable and they need to switch it up. It helps your comp get better and plus it keeps people wanting to play, even if they get their ass handed to them. No one likes playing douches.

You’d think a member of this forum, might be a little less of a fucking cry baby.

Sometimes after an online match I’ll tell a guy I hate him or something simple like that, I’m not spitting anger. When I used to play in arcades I was usually a pretty good sport and I don’t think you should try to smack talk with someone you don’t know well and I generally won’t. I’m not very good so I know most of the people I beat either don’t know the Vega match up or are having a bad day, so why lord over someone who can come back and beast me? It’s pointless.

It’s much different to smack talk with a little online message than to someone’s face. I just want to lead the following paragraphs with that fact.

I mean it’s no different than the smack talk after a game of say foosball. It’s just impossible to predict who has a good sense of humor and who is a big fucking crybaby who is going to try to get you blacklisted or fight you IRL. It’s just presumptuous to assume that people have the same opinions on trash talk or hype as you, obviously online it’s a little different.

You do not know how people will react, if you want to see then provoke, if you don’t want to take that chance keep your fucking mouth shut. Ultimately the point of trash talk is to irritate and provoke, and you really have no one to blame but yourself if you provoke someone into kicking your ass.

EDIT: It’s a negative thing depending on the negativity of the people involved. If you can’t understand wanting to hurt someone because they made you feel bad or inadequate you’re missing a fundamental aspect of the human condition.

Talking trash on PSN or XBL just makes me LOL. It doesn’t even bother me, I don’t see how you guys can get so mad over it. I think Trash Talking breeds better competition anyway. I talk trash to you I win, you get mad you go home practice come back and level up to try and beat me…That’s the best way to get better in my opinion. As I said earlier, if you can’t handle trash talk maybe you need to play a different game?

Who are you even talking about getting mad? I just think it’s silly to expect you can trash talk, especially in real life, with impunity. If you can play pool go do it in a skeezy pool hall, and see how it works out. The world is not 4chan.

I didn’t quote you so my post wasn’t AIMED at you. If you read the first 2 pages people get “mad” and pissed off when someone sends them a trash talking message. I enjoy these message because it makes me laugh.

I would much rather see someone talk trash in real life than over the internet. Anyone and everyone can trash talk behind a computer or a tv screen, but not many are willing to do it in person. If its the “nerds” and “geeks” doing the trash talking in real life then I’m not sure what this world has come to.

Moved to Fighting Game Discussion.

retrokid: that’s a good post

story by Professor Stoli: HILARIOUS. i don’t think you should preserve anonymity in that situation.

and i have no problem with insulting messages on PS3 online, i find them funny and lets me know I fought a good fight.

Best thing to do if someone talks trash is to ignore it, it may be a challenge but just do it. You win they lost , they want the win back so they will say anything to make them feel like a winner and not like a loser. Just ignore it , when you go up the ladder why look down , just keep goin up , leave them roaches in the dust =)

I tend to compliment the people that beat me. Never make up excuses to a loss. I have people losing saying I was on the phone you are lucky… lol.
trash talking is for losers unless its in a good way and manner and joke.

I completely disagree with the original poster’s premise that trash talking is fun and part of competition.

I dont think its a part of competition.
Taunting in a match is in a way part of competition, but not shit talking. Shit talking will just create anger for some people. Try 1% shit talking with a 5% complementing. People tend to forget its just a game and start talking trash because of all the frustration build up =)

Speaking of other people that get really irritated and cry when people call them names. Hey, Jinrai! Bored again, are we?

:bgrin:

I dont talk trash, hit me up with that in a boxing match and you’ll lose your ability to do so.

Is this not trash talking? LOL.

Hypocritical, no?

I don’t trash talk, its just who I am, but when people trash talk to me it usually turns out to be really fun.

Offline that is, online sometimes its hard to decide what to make of it.

My god these topics are popular. I’m just going to quote myself from a previous, recent, and very similar thread.

Hype in no way affects my interest in tourneys.

I just want to see amazing players.

Haha, exactly twenty words.

I won’t address other parts of your post but I have to ask this: What has JWong done for the community? No, winning tournaments doesn’t count. That only benefits himself :stuck_out_tongue: I would like to know why some people like to say “you newcomers don’t understand”. What is there to understand about the guy in relation to the community?

They seem to think there’s a direct corrolation between being part of SRK and knowing about the Street Fighter/gaming community. There isn’t. The community existed before SRK and before the Internet in the form of social gatherings at arcades, houses and events. To be frank, I wouldn’t even call SRK a true community due to a good number of distespectful, arrogant and elitist members. Communities foster growth tolerance but here, anyone (NOT everyone) with an 08 sign-up, premium membership or even just a childish mentality can tout they are more in the know…but have no idea who they’re even talking to due to the anonymous nature of the Internet. Faceless people making idle threats and ignorant statements at eachother.

There are exceptions and I apologize for the broad generalization to those who actually carry themselves with dignity and respect for members. You know who you are. No, not you.

As for JWong giving back to the community, he has done his part by granting interviews, entering contests and exposing himself and his talent at a public venue. We watch his YouTube videos and learn what we can. He even charged for 1 on 1’s, which made him accessible to those who felt inclined. Can you imagine what it would be like for him to be a regular member who was accessible to everyone anytime? That would be like expecting (insert famous bball player here) to hang out at the courts all day waiting to play pick-up games…with anyone. Scrubs galore and people looking to make a name for themselves would be crawling out of the woodwork! My point is that he does make the community better by playing at his level and inspiring us to do likewise. Regardless of his antics (which I have no problem with…except for that twingalaxies interview), he’s done his part. Can we say the same?
