Wow, I just read that, and holy shit is homeboy a douche. Arrogance flows in him…strong. I do not care if he is a pillar of the community, that attitude is not what the top player in the nation should be showing to the public. That is exactly why he got his ass handed to him at the Gamestop Tourney, and probably this year’s Evo. Karma is just…well, karma, and what goes around, comes around. We will have to wait and see though.
I don’t think trash-talking is cool at all. If anything, and this is a BIG maybe, I can KINDA see it in actual sports where you’re physically using your body, i.e., Football, Basketball, etc. Even then that’s a stretch but I can “kinda” see it. Again, I use it loosely. However, to talk shit about kicking someone’s ass in a video game? That’s just pathetic, because it doesn’t “count.” By “count” it’s not like you have anything to show for it like in actual sports. In Football, Baseball, etc, your health (in theory) gets better, you get stronger, faster, more agile, can run harder and what not. What do you get from being “the best” at a videogame? Tough thumbs?!? Good hand-eye coordination? You get that in sports. Bottom line, even when I win at games or sports (even against my friends) I NEVER talk any shit. It’s just idiotic to talk shit because you’re good at a game. C’mon, gimme a break are you fucking serious? Granted, it’s cool if you’re with your friends and you’re dickin’ around and it’s all in good fun amongst your friends. That’s cool. There’s an understanding and familiarity there with each other. But to actually talk shit and be serious about it like “yeah I just whupped yo ass son, get the fuck off my game” you’re just BEGGING to get your ass kicked for real. At a minimum, if you’re gonna talk shit on a videogame be prepared to back it up for real because you may need to! Bottom line, talking shit is at least somewhat understandable in actual sports but videogames? Please… Then again maybe it’s just because I’ve always let my abilities do the talking for me:clapdos:
I only talk trash when I’m playing against friends. Other than that, then I’ll be that quiet Asian guy in the corner who takes his wins and loses. But yeah. I’ll start talking MAD shit if your a really close friend who can take jokes. But man, when people talk shit to me though, like I said in another thread, I crumble.:bluu:
I tend to agree with that.
Also, I think that the experience of real physical competition necessarily changes your perspective.
For instance, after spending years training boxing and MT it’s impossible for me to think of it as anything but a game, a toy and hearing someone talk shit over it is purely amusing.
when someone d/c on me i just send “lolololololoollol” other then that i’m to lazy to message anything to anyone
Not when I’m playing online, although I can see how it might be a useful tactic. When playing with friends, no-one can talk a line of shit better than me. See this PA strip for some idea of how bad I can get.
They understand it’s all in good fun, though, and they give just as good as they get, so it’s all cool.
As for trash talking in a competitive atmostphere…I see no problem with it. Back when I used to play SF2 in the sole arcade in this city, people would be constantly trash-talking, but after each match, the handshake or equivalent would come out and everything would be fine. It’s just how things are in this genre of games.
I think a lot of it comes down to whether or not you’re insulting your opponent or hyping yourself up. If a dude is insulting me, I get kind of annoyed. If a dude is making himself out to be God’s gift to SF, then I can just grin and try to beat his ass as best I can.
I’m not a new player by any means but my layoff was so long and so complete that I might as well be.
Like To See:
Divisions in gatherings and tournaments rather than a single setup or giant bracket.
I’m sure there are a lot of people who’d like to be part of an event, but don’t want to have to compete against people who are completely out of their league.
Of course, there’s a matter of resources in a gathering (space, equipment) and sandbagging in tournaments but I think it would be worth it. If there’s no new blood or the bar for entry into a community is too high, it can only die.
Avoid The Whole Scene:
Cliques, elitism and the echo chamber. Not much fun in hanging around with a bunch of guys snickering over five year old inside jokes. Likewise, being completely dismissive of lower level players or new ideas is pretty unattractive.
People need to learn how to decipher the differences in trash talking and generating hype.
trash talking + video games =WIN
Agree.
Its also important to note that some opponents will absorb the trash talk and come out in the next round/match in Beast Mode. It will serve players well to keep their mouth shut against that type of player.
I’d rather someone talk trash then to take it to a physical level over a video game. It’s a better way of venting then the latter. Besides it builds determination when someones talking smack, at least for me.
Eh, depends. Light-hearted trash talking is one thing. Constanly cussing people out that you don’t really know, especially online, is just immature.
I don’t let it get to me really, if someone is just going to start slinging: bitch, faggot, mother fucker, etc every other second. I’ll just put my headset down, finish the match and not continue another match with them.
I do cut up with my friends and family online though, but we know it’s in good natured fun and we do it in person anyway.
Nobody is really that interested in your behavior online. Trash talking online is like punching someone in the dark. You’ve insulated yourself the consequences, so its pretty meaningless.
Trash talking is a way of life in socal arcades. Has been for as long as I’ve been going, and I don’t anticipate it going away anytime soon. It works cause everyone knows each other.
Much like swearing and “racist” language, its all about context. I’m sure we can all think of a certain word beginning with the letter N that is only appropriate in certain types of music and when its being used by certain people. Context. Likewise, if you’re purposely trying to put someone down and you’re generally being a dick, its not appreciated. If friends are just trash talking over a harmless game and everyone’s cool with it, there’s nothing to worry about.
i never trash talk cause its bad karma. people usually start doing worse when
they trash talk. plus you look like a fool if you lose after talkin smack.
Yes.
surprised no one has linked this vid yet:
I don’t trash talk much myself but I definitely appreciate some good trash talking.
EDIT: dead_frog is straight ass in SFIV, real talk. come see me, ho. :grrr::grrr::grrr::grrr::grrr::grrr::grrr::grrr:
Trash talking is cool…within reason.
If someone on my FL sends me a game invite-- I’ll get on the mike and be like “how’s it going man…etc” Before the match starts… “U ready to get that ass whooped?”(I typically get a response like “Bring it then” or something)
I generally only do that with people I know…for fun and to hype up the game…never with intentions of dissing someone or hurting their feelings
who knows. i dont think a lot of people even give a fuck about jwong, but people around jwong. i think it was cool that he gave people who really wanted to, the opportunity to play him and learn, but eh, fucking watch videos, play, read the forums, and you will be just fine. if you sucked before you played jwong online, you will probably still suck right after. you aint gonna come out that shit nice without hardwork still.
i guess some would argue his accomplishments have opened eyes, and blah blah blah, but if he didnt exist, someone else would be there to take his shine, as there are tons of good players out there. no big to me. nigga just wins a lot
trash talk is cool to me as long as it’s kept within your culture… be it your group of friends or your area or your country. As soon as you bring that out into an alien environment you’re being classless IMO.
And for those who think JPN players don’t trash talk, wow you guys haven’t really played a lot of players then. I hear trash talk all the time when I play in the arcades, but it is kept within friends and people don’t go and talk like that to people outside of their circle.
Shit look what happened at VF4 nationals like 4 years ago. BTW this is between two players who play in the same area, so they know each other well:

First dude: I can’t let this dude win so I’m gonna stop him here
second dude: I’m not going to lose to some shitty character! This is gonna be an easy match, just watch!
random dude in the crowd: Hurry up and die! (second dude flips him the finger)
