Is this SNK's greatest game?

KoFXIII is certainly my favorite so far, although I never played their other fighting games too seriously. I really liked Sam Sho 6 also though, I think that game is really good, I actually wish I knew of a way to still play it now other than by myself on my ps2, lol.

Why people hated Fatal Fury Wild Ambition 10 years ago? i had some fun with it in that time  (for real…).

Wind Jammers definitely the greatest. Technically Data East developed the game but still…it’s Wind Jammers.

No I haven’t actually played the game though I hear I should.

Try Street Hoops

If we aren’t talking strictly fighting games then I would say Metal Slug X and Metal Slug 3 are the best SNK games for sure.

I want to see Playmore do an HD 2d revival of Samurai Shodown… then they will have my <3 in full.

SNKP’s best, yes…
SNK… top 5 fighters, definitely… 13, 2k2, LB2, MotW, RB2, in no particular order. Fuck 98, honestly.
SNK’s best games though, I think are the Metal Slug series… over any fighter they ever did.

Pretty much this, Metal Slug 3 was the best for me, hard as fuck, Epic final mission and a lot of different paths. MS is a really enjoyable franchise.

SNKP’s best metal slug was the 5th instalment for me.

100% this. make an HD SS2, go all out on a SS7 in KOF13 fashion and it would probably be my favorite game.

Metal Slug 5 could’ve been the 2nd best of the franchise had they spent a little more time on it. It’s obvious that Metal Slug 3, X, and 1 are the definitive games. But 5 is very good, it features the Slug Mecha, a secret evil Slug as a mini boss, and it’s fun. 4 is just a rehash done by Koreans. 6 Had the most potential but felt kinda’ meh. 7 I think is the 2nd best of the SNKP Metal Slug games. The biggest grievance is that it’s made up of almost entirely re-used sprites but the bosses are great and it has some much-needed variety.

I look forward to an HD Metal Slug.

BTW: Most underrated SNK game is Kizuna Encounter and maybe Real Bout 2. Play that shit.

Yeah MS: 1, X , 3 are the definitive games, 5 had a really nice feeling from the old games.

Kizuna encounter had a really nice tag system, the game was fun my only issue is that some characters looked so lame (except Rosa, Hayate and Leo), anyways this is my personal preference.

I’ve only played the first Real Bout, i had the japanese PSN imported game because it was really hard to find in my country and played the shit out of that game, the execution, combos and basics were really cool, and the game featured a video tutorial (if i remember) for the most sick combos, i will try Real Bout 2 now thanks for the reminder haha

Real Bout 2 is the shit. All I can say about it. IMHO better than Garou MOTW with overall better balance. Though 2-3 characters have infinites and one of which (Bob) is pretty easy to do, but not too many people use him.

Veering off topic, I know, but was there a variation (bootleg, maybe?) of Metal Slug 2 that didn’t have the slowdown?

Because I played the ever loving hell out of MS2 at Pizza Hut in my youth, but I don’t remember it ever having the degree of slowdown I’m now experiencing now that I have a Neo Geo myself. I’m aware that Metal Slug X was supposed to be Metal Slug 2 without the slowdown, but there’s many more differences between the two versions than that.

And yeah, I loved the Real Bout series. Played a lot of Real Bout Special.

Yup, and it’s just heartbreaking that SNKP got the game absolutely spot on, but botched the online completely. It’s like SNK needed a touchdown to survive and drew up a brilliant hail mary play that was caught beautifully for 90 yards but then fumbled at the 1 yd line :(.

IMO if SNK was smart, they would drastically overhaul the online. Announce it, take down the online for a few days if needed…get all the press they can get and then relaunch it with spectator and lobbies, and IMPROVED ****ING NETCODE.

It would be even more hype to get this game into more peoples hands. No one would mind a week or so offline so long as it returned with good, truly playable online.

Lacking? Have you SEEN the backgrounds?

Eh… I was able to play a guy in Chicago (gdlk player I might add) and I’m upstate NY and I’d describe it as ‘pretty good’ only thing it’s hard to block crossups and short hops online. Otherwise it’s great. I imagine a lot of people have to be playing on wireless or from other countries.

no that title(imo) goes to 2k2um. 13 is still missing character and characters in the game are missing some of their signature moves(clark and duo).

After spending enough time with this game, I’ll say that it isn’t SNK’s greatest game, or even the greatest KOF. It’s definitely up there, but overall I’d still say KOF’98, 2k2UM, and XI are slightly better (for different reasons), as well as some other SNK fighters like Last Blade 2, Garou, etc.

The only reason this game seems better is because Capcom’s fighters have always been good enough that you could ignore SNK games and still enjoy yourself. You didn’t necessarily need SNK when you had Mahvel, Vampire Savior, SFA, SF3, CvS2, Jojo, etc.

But now Capcom has SSF4AE and UMvC3 - both of which have characters that were obviously made to dominate others, both of which have mechanics that favor bad players and their habits - and we have SFxT on the way, which hasn’t exactly been doing Capcom any favors with what we know of it among the hardcore fighting game fans. It’s kinda hard to enjoy just modern Capcom fighters these days. So when KOFXIII comes along, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what Capcom’s fighters have been lately, it’s hard to ignore.

I think you make good points regarding the Capcom games. However, with regard to the older KoFs (I can’t speak much to XI as I didn’t have much opportunity to play it), I think the hardware restrictions that they had to work with made them feel very clunky, a problem not present in XIII, that I think helps push XIII to the top of the SNK fighting game list. I don’t really mean the graphics, but the feel of the gameplay has been much improved and, to me anyway, that makes for a major difference in quality.

I also really liked Samurai Showdown VI and would probably put that 2nd on my personal SNK fighting game favorite list. My only exposure to true high level play in game was through watching japanese match vids though, so there may be major problems with that game that I was unaware of that are relevant to the discussion.

Yeah, the “feel” of this KOF is just so, so good, and by far the best of the KOFs imo. 98 was fun as hell tho, but play it now and it feels its’ age, especially compared to the incredibly fluid movement of XIII. Samurai Shodown V Special was my fav SS, but I never got VI :frowning: Is it really that good?

And yeah modern Capcom fighters are garbage. SF4 and MVC3 are terrible, terrible games. I have no idea why those games are so accepted by the community…
