I think 2002UM is still the best, but this is nonetheless a very well designed game, and the character balance seems better than ever.
The question I would rather have answered is this the most hyped snk game to come out? KOF 95 got fighting game of the year. KOF 98 was talked about in the same breath as Street Fighter Alpha 3. Garou had a crazy hype cause everyone raved about it, but it wasn’t released on console in the US till 2 years after the arcade release.
Personally all things considering KOF XIII is the most hyped IMO.
it’s not really the best,some characters are still missing and the fan service is lacking.
it seems like KOF is finally getting the recognition it deserves thanks for the graphics alone although ben reed posted some pretty good points.
that said I’m loving it, as a long time fan the new graphics are refreshing and it’s something I’d been waiting for more than 10 years

True. But it’s a cult hit compared to 13. Not knocking the UM games but 13 is making serious fucking waves that rarely a KOF title has made in the last decade.

Just from KoFs, I still prefer 2002 UM. My personal pick for epitome of 2D fighting.

For me it kinda recaptured the whole SNK magic.
I won’t call it the best but I have it up there with my other favorites like KOF XI and KOF MIRA. It doesn’t have that charm 98 has though. I do hold it above 02UM since I enjoy it a lot more than 02UM. 02UM just has what I call “Perfect” King when she’s a beast at all ranges.
