Is this game worth investing time in?

Okay, so I’ve been playing this since it came out casually. In the past month or so I’ve really been trying to get better because I thought this was going to be an Evo game again. Last night I read it’s not in the line-up this year, and it really got me wondering if it’s worth investing time in.

I’m not a fair-weather fan, but the main reason I play is for tournament competition. I can always get a game online, but what does it matter if you’re the best in the world at it if there are no serious tournaments? (I’m not saying I’m the best in the world.)

Do you think it will ever get back into the Evo line up? I personally think Capcom vs SNK 2 is one of, if not the best 2D fighting game ever made (and most certainly my favorite), but as far as I can tell, there’s no heartbeat left in the community. I don’t want this great game to end up the same…

This kind of game, along with ST and HF, is just the type of game Capcom wants dead, for good. It is not their interest to keep games with deepness alive, where combo lovers styles are easily outclassed if they do not have position awareness, self-control, reflexes and knowledge of the game. Capcom favors the Ono design, which does not want players dominating others completely due to having a deep knowledge of the game and a strategy behind their actions. Newbies have no hope in SF2 but to get better. There are no ultras, no free supers if you are about to die, no easy reversals out of loops, few chains and not that many hit-confirms that you repeat over and over and who confirms more, wins. It is scary, but you may have your super blocked. In fact, it may be absolutely necessary to have your super blocked or even whiff completely, just so you can get out of a dangerous situation.

SF2 is like good music: the industry wants it dead cos you can not get a masterpiece at will, every year, like people can get a couple of hits for popstars and market it up our asses so if we do not buy it, our friends and neighbors will and they will get their yearly money anyway.

ST still has some tournaments around. And an active scene in another country (Japan). But if you want to be recognized by youngsters and have a very large pool of players, even if most of them are not that skilled, just play SF4 and whatever new game they release that sells a lot. They will be at EVO, SF2 will not unless a new revamped version is released, which goes against the best interests of the manufacturer.

I cannot stand games like SF4 for all of the reasons you mentioned above. I can’t imagine a better game design than that of SF2… but short of an SF2 spirited game, I guess I would prefer a game that at least doesn’t have easy outs. I love SF2 and I’m not going to quit playing it… but it’s just sad that this game is not more widely played (in or out of tournaments in the US) and I think that’s a sentiment we can all agree with.

This game is dead(also a step back from the series), u should play ST, idk where u live but ppl still make gatherings offline, or u can play it on GGPO

ST might be twice as healthy as HDR is, but this is like a homeless person with $10 crowing about being twice as wealthy as his friend who only has a five dollar bill to his name.

$10, $5, they’re both still homeless.

What my friends have taught me is that if you enjoy one particular fighting game, you should stick to it. Personally, I think that Capcom could continue to push this game by adding more characters under the SSF2T:HD Remix format/engine. I would love to see how some characters like Adon and Guy would play like under the SSF2 engine and this would have been pretty damn perfect for this. As for SF4, I find the game to be entertaining and frustrating at the same time. Just stick to what you love bud.

HDR is dead for sure and will never be an EVO game again… There are a bizillion fighting games being made these days. ST on the other hand has a small but strong following and is still played in many big tourneys in the US (mostly a side event) and of course SBO in Japan. I think ST is one of those games that will never die out completely. Its just too good of a game and never gets old. ST is the best fighting game ever made but if money and prestige is your goal I would say don’t bother with either of them.

Amen to that.

HDR has enough of ST’s goodness to still stay alive for a while longer. And it doesn’t have to be one or the other, you can play both like me, on XBL and GGPO.

But yeah, I would kill to get some new characters for this game (one of those ST purists lol). Hell, I’d commit murder just to get some new Command Normals/Special Attacks/Super Attacks for every character. Both games are so deep and so much fun, I wouldn’t be SO surprised if Capcom Japan decided to reboot ST for SF2’s 25th anniversary! One can always hope…

I think Capcom is missing out by not continuing the SF2 series as downloadable titles under the HD Remix banner. They would probably have to create a new engine to be able to add new characters and many new moves, but once that was done they could do the usual Capcom thing and use that engine to release a slightly updated version every year. I think a series of downloadable games with SF2 type gameplay would compliment the full retail SF4 series and give us old schoolers something fresh to keep playing (and keep SF2 gameplay at tournies).

Until then I’ll keep playing HDR (and some ST).

I’m expecting a new online version of ST during a future SF2 anniversary. It seems all of us have similar concepts in mind and it seems like an obvious step. The main reason HDR doesn’t work as a base is because hand-drawn artwork would likely be cost-prohibitive and a hassle to source. The title should be something catchy, like “Street Fighter vs. The World.”

Keep the engine as close to ST as possible but use cel-shaded polygons (or steal a few sprite artists from SNK). In order to save costs and because visuals won’t be the focus, the graphics don’t need to be amazing. The MVC2 port already proved that antiquated sprite visuals can sell well if there’s a great cast of characters. And it’ll be a new game so 100% adherence to ST mechanics won’t be necessary. The plus of using SF2 over new games is that there aren’t a lot of animation frames necessary.

Now the main draw is that you start with 30-60 characters in the main release and just keep adding new character packs via DLC until the roster reaches 100+. Use characters from all series: Rockman, Strider Hiryu, Monster Hunter, Biohazard zombies, a few Sengoku Basara samurai, etc. Since SF2 doesn’t need much work, these could be churned out much faster and easier than equivalent DLC for MVC3. Capcom loves DLC and players love interesting characters so this shouldn’t be difficult. Cameo packs from other companies would be really interesting as well. Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat pack. Street Fighter vs. Musou pack. Street Fighter vs. Final Fantasy pack. Fans will likely eagerly wait for the next unexpected DLC character pack as long as the price is reasonable. The possibilities are limitless and you’ll be jealous when you see someone use a character you don’t have. Gotta collect them all!

Balance probably won’t be ideal but would anyone care if the game is fun to play, makes a lot of money, and produces some sort of scene? With DLC packs coming out all the time, it’ll be a constant challenge to appraise and defend against new moves. As long as the game gets played, I’ll play it at tournaments. If it sticks, great; anything with the SF2 engine will be much more fun for me than current generation titles. If it doesn’t, no problem: back to reliable ST again and a wait for the next SF2 iteration. Let’s have it, Capcom.

I honestly could NOT see that coming. I think a version of ST online is much more of a possibility… but can’t you do that by playing HDR on original mode, with original graphics? Or is it not true to the original?

Here’s to hoping we get something to do with ST and online gameplay for SF’s 25th.

It seems like alot of people want something special for the 25th of SF. It would be nice. Petition to Capcom mah-be?

Wow, u guys dream too much, only thing really needed is an official ST release for PC (instead of using an Emulator) n optimized for it, cuz its the only stable plataform instead of consoles, which come n go every 5 yrs.

Publishing a game for console is a pain since they dont patch it (HDR) PC gives way more freedom

Wow, you are “expecting” this to happen? I would love to see it happen, but I think you are nutts! LOL

A person can dream. We will have to wait and see what Capcom is planning on pulling off.

Consider this: you’re put in charge of making a new game for Street Fighter II’s 25th anniversary. What do you do to attract fans and make money for Capcom? A basic port or remake would work but there’s a clear ceiling marked by the performances of HF on XBL and HDR.

My concept makes sense based on past successes and current expectations. And it would be a great situation for the SF2 competitive community. If someone has a better concept, feel free to speak away.

Oh, I like your concept, don’t get me wrong. I just think realistically Capcom has no intentions of going that deep into a “anniversary” release of anything. I bet Capcom hasn’t given any thought into any SF2 game recently. Now, maybe with the size of this community we could influence something to happen?

I think HDR is worth playing. Even without big major tournaments, the idea behind HDR is that it’s a fun fighting game. Just because a game isn’t as competitive as another game doesn’t mean it’s not worth learning. Any SSBM player will tell you the same as that game is even less popular than HDR, but they still manage

thats plain stupid, it wouldnt be a better concept, it would be more of MVC2/3 concept with a flawed SF2 engine, in that case, go straight cheap n use SF4 characters n simply add ST mechanics to it 100%, it doesnt need to be poligons, just screen captures of the SF4 3d models(a la Donkey Kong Country), then switched by the old ST sprites, backgrounds just copy/paste (if possible) The reason of NOT using poligons is to allow the GGPO netcode allow the best online experience unlike the bad netcode used in SF4

Then name it :

**“Street Fighter 4: The Classic Edition” **(aka Street Fighter 25th)

here is where the sales speech works: “we bring the best of 2 generations, the best fightng game of all times mechanics (SSF2T) melted with newest generation graphics (SF4), and the best online experience ever(GGPO)”

In the past, SF4 advertised itself as classic SF2 gameplay(not true at the end) n new generation graphics, the result? SF4 was a huge success in sales, the moral of it, dont use the “Street Fighter 2” as part of the title, it wont sell as good as “Street Fighter 4” does

Btw, a major change should be the damage amount of all supers being limited, 35% of stamina at most. I c ur insane dmg supers: Chun Li n Rog
