I don’t think that is accurate. They have different hair color because the DBZ anime went with a purple look when he was meant to have blue hair.
Unless we going deep lore speculation time travel shit and saying the Trunks that Cell killed in the future was the original Future Trunks and the one that came back is from a branching timeline. But the Future Trunks in DBS is meant to be the same one that fought alongside them against Cell.
Future Trunks in DBS never met Goku (that’s why he attacked Goku and thought it was Black). Unless, Future Trunk went to the DBS timeline before he went to the DBZ timeline (kinda like the Eobard Thawne situation in The Flash CW show)

DBS Trunks and DBZ Future Trunks are the same person. However, there are 2 Trunks now (and 2 Mais) in the future after the Black Saga
Which doesn’t really matter, well, for now, because the second FT doesn’t even show up.

The funniest part is that we only know of 2 Future Trunkses. In reality there could be dozens of them because of all the additional timelines that were created as a result of the Goku Black saga
They are still trying to make things mesh with the end of Z. Future Trunks and my going to a timeline that really isn’t there’s makes no sense. Staying behind made more sense.

I was just rewatching the Future Trunks Saga, and is it me or is it actually a gigantic ball of filler?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great saga, but think about the actual lasting repercussions.
With FT’s timeline getting erased, him and Future Mai leaving for another completely unrelated timeline (AKA the biggest WTF? moment in the entirety of Super) Goku and Vegeta not gaining a new form or anything and pretty much nothing changing in the main timeline, you can simply skip to the ToP saga without missing anything.
It’s a whole saga with nothing but filler.
We all got got by that one.
We learned that trunks is stronger than goku and vegetta and gogetta ssgssb

he also was able to fight at the same level of fused Zamasu lol. You really need to throw away power levels or consistency in Super. We saw Krillin beating Gohan later and earlier end of Z Piccolo losing to Freeza essentially lol
