The only thing you have to fear from low tier is that a character that’s labeled as such is done for a reason, and that’s based on how well they can go against the rest of the character roster. However, if you know the character very well, the chances are better to the point where their places on tiers won’t matter.
I personally don’t care for tier listings, as I use characters who I chose to use, and have learned to use and become comfortable with. King in CvS2 and KOF games, I love that girl, and know her like the back of my hand, which is hairy, and sometimes smells of muskrat. Or even Anna and Julia in T5, chalk it up to my love of brunettes, but those characters are much more comfortable for me than Steve or Bryan.
If I were to enter a tourney, it’d be the same way. I’m not gonna use a “top-tier” character just because they have a better chance of winning, because I sure as hell wouldn’t have that chance using a character I don’t know well.
I agree with you. There are some games (like Marvel) where you only really stand a chance of winning if you use the top tier characters. In a lot of games, though, I personally think it comes down to the skill levels of the players more than anything else. In 3S, will a Ryu player have to play a better game than a Ken player of the exact same skill level? Yes. But what are the chances of finding someone with the exact same skill level. While tiers do exist, I don’t believe in basing who I play around them. I just use whoever I get comfortable with. Sometimes that means I play top tier characters, other times I play mid or bottom tier characters.
Well if your using a high tier against a low tier in some games like tekken the only thing you have to fear is being embarassed for getting beat. Its for more difficult for low tiers to defeat high tiers in games then it is for a high tier to lose to a low tier.
Like in 3s low tiers have horrible times against ken’s or chun lis
In t5 the steve, nina ,and bryan cause all kinds of problems for other characters
MVC2 you’ll be hard pressed not to find sent,storm,mags,or cable rearing there heads at the top of tournament play.
Can a low tier be competitive yeah. But the players usually have to be far better then the people they play to do so.
