Is it worth getting into?

Hello everyone! Long time Street Fighter fan/spectator and have longed thought about trying out one of the games for myself. I’ve always been just one of those guys that needs competition. I can’t just play a game for a little bit and be satisfied y’know? I have to either become great at it…or ultimately it’s juste a waste of time in my eyes. Trouble is the current popular competitive games I’m just not that into. Starcraft while great is very stressful and right now crazy over saturated with great players. As for league and DOTA…well I’m just not that into the genre. SFIV has these super ridiculous specific/hidden timings in order to do some of the most basic of combos. (seriously have any new player try to do the trial mode and no matter how you slice it – there’s just no intuitive way to learn the game.) And…UMvC seems to just be a super move spam fest… : /

So my questions to you guys are as follows…

  1. Are there any tournaments currently being held for this game? (whether online or at some event)

  2. Is SF3 plagued by the same crazy specific strict timings that SFIV had to string basic combos?

  3. What format is the game most played on? XBL? PSN? GGPO? (is there at least a decent xbox crowd? cause that’d be my first best…have a good arcade stick for it

  4. What advice would you have for a new player looking to get into the game?

Thanks in advance for any well thought out input : )

  1. Tournaments are a divisive thing. Don’t worry about that so much to start with, but rather as looking for any general group to play with in your area.

  2. The feel in SF3 is pretty cool. Something that doesn’t seem to exist anymore in SF4, Low Forward->Shoryu is awesome. Something like Ryu crMP x2 would be like a 1 frame link here so get that out of your head right now, that was something everyone fished with over on SF4, that put me off to that game.

  3. There are active players on all versions. GGPO could be the most unfriendly to new players, or have the least new players. Xbox is fine, stick to what you want to do, and have equipment for.

  4. Get experience, read up, ask questions, be legit.

Do you need a lot of other people playing? Or do you naturally have a competitive drive? That’s one of those not everyone has. and just coming into this one, be prepared to lose and know how to take those losses.

And its only just like, do you like the game or not.
you’re going to have to find your own motivation to play.
Please don’t cite “no tournaments - not worth it” or something if you eventually decide the game is not for you.

Hey thanks for the response I appreciate it. I just bought it and am happy to report that I can actually do the trial mode without ripping out my hair ^^ Definitely a challenge but a welcome one. But to respond on the tournament point. Truth be told I do need tournaments to justify investing hundreds and hundreds of hours into a game. What we seek as a reward for our dedication is just that y’know? Recognition. That’s what’s so cool about tournaments. They offer the chance to prove yourself – to feel good about yourself – to be respected by your fellow competitors. If I can’t have that in mind as something that I’m working towards then I’d have a hard time justifying putting in the time no matter how great the game is. (Really does seem great btw : D )

(btw I work 3rd shift so I’m about to go sleep now haha so if my reply is late that’s why ^^)

If you want to compete in tournaments I wouldn’t recommend playing 3rd. That is unless you’re willing/planning on living in or visiting Japan.

execution wise only annoying thing I noticed about sf4 was the inability to cancel into a special if the normal was a chain.

If you’re into the game, have people offline to play or you think its fun then go for it. if not, its not “worth getting into”

Play the games you love. I can’t get into SF4 because I just don’t truly enjoy the art or how it plays. Even if there is only one person left on earth playing 3S, I will play.

the general rule is that if you have to ask whether or not to play 3rd Strike, you don’t love it enough to compensate for the fact that it has more or less no presence in western “pro gaming” (or whatever). basically, you need to weigh the esports thing against your enjoyment of the game, and right now it doesn’t sound like anything can beat the prior from your perspective. you could also try some other popular games like tekken if you’re interested in something that has sponsors throwing big prizes at tournaments and stuff if you don’t like new capcom games.

If you want hoop dreams, go play AE. 3S isn’t a good game to try to go pro in, it’s a game to play because you really like your character, the game, and/or the scene. No sane 3S player has recognition for their play as their primary drive.

Really is a shame  Appreciate the feedback though

It’s only a shame if you want to join the droves of idiots that think you should only play a game so you can one day main stage in Vegas.

I think mostly tournaments in the US run SSF4 and Marvel 3 anyway. KOF too I guess. you kinda have to play one of those or go without tournaments/recognition etc. I think it’s more worthwhile to just play a game you really enjoy but it’s up to you.

Not sure why the pursuit of glory should label anyone an idiot… I have much respect for the guys who put in the time to get that good. I wouldn’t call anyone an idiot here but putting in lots and lots of time to only have yourself to impress just isn’t enough to motivate most including me. But as long as there is a scene – no matter how big or small – if there’s dedicated players to play against in any given enjoyable game I’m going to be interested (as should others). There just has to be an event to make it feel significant y’know? I dunno maybe down the road a game that I’ll really like will be popular but until then maybe I’ll check this and SF2HDR out.

move to Japan!

Last time i checked, the point of ALL video games was fun…not fame/impressing people…i play this for fun, just like i play sports/puzzle/mmorpg/adventure/spacesim/etc. for fun… Games aren’t about “is it worth the time” the time spent is supposed to be WHY you would play a given game. Because you have fun during that time spent. “is it worth the time” makes it seem like it’s not fun until a ‘big event’

that being said, you could always organize tournaments/events if you’re determined enough.

For me and I’m sure others – games after a certain point (for me it was high school) felt like a waste of time unless they actually affected my social life. Otherwise that fun is just a false sense of achievement nothing more. With the pressures of getting older, having to find a career, a girlfriend. yada yada yada…So with me I have to find a connection to my personal life y’know whether it be playing with friends or whatever – but I also need to satisfy my need for competition and my desire for a real feeling of success in something that matters to not just me. We only live once! Who wouldn’t want a chance at glory?

we’ll see though. not sure if anyone in my area cares enough. something to consider though among other things… : /

How does working at McDonalds or getting a succubus make a game less fun? Are you one of those people that thinks they’re sooooo nerdy for using facebook XDXD?

Serious answer: people (masochists and mashers) still play this game on Xbox every day, but the conversion is messed up. That’s it. A once classic game now not so classic.

lol@hoop dreams, srsly

I don’t like you, PointBreak91.

Imagine what I think of you, grinding away on those Chun-Li Live charts. Have fun

OMG leave Pointbreak91 alone, he is a key member in the UK 3rd Strike scene and i have met him numerous times at different 3rd Strike tournaments and events, he’s really keeping the scene alive, no… wait… i’m thinking of someone else, never mind.

On a serious note it depends where you live i guess, where i live in the UK we have weekly offline 3rd Strike sessions, as well as bigger tournaments every month or so plus there’s a new arcade opening in London where Raju is planning on hosting regular 3rd Strike sessions. Outside of Japan, Paris is probably the best place to play 3rd Strike as they have 2 great Arcades and regular tournaments, majors and sessions. New York also seems to be happening now thanks to Nica KO

^but you only started playing this game a few years ago after watching a parry vid, and downloading a free rom :clown:

Last good thing to come out of Bristol was Blue Lines.
