Iron Body - Zangief General

I caught some of his trials. I’m surprised to see lariat being used as a viable part of a combo.
I’ve seen videos where lariats appear to send them to the other side of the screen but that doesn’t always seem to happen consistently. I wonder if quick lariat actually has a use now? :razzy:

i was watching stream and saw people jumping right out of giefs cross assault grab like they added startup on it. if this is true and it acts like e hondas ultra 2 its gonna suck balls.

Tell me you’re joking…
If so, it’s without question the worst super in the game and the only one that can’t be comboed into. How long before people have it in their hands to test? :frowning:

EDIT: “Cross assault grab”? Do you mean Super Art?

Yeah his ultra. if it is slow start fuck that shit.

Are you sure it wasn’t just out of range? If they were right beside him and jumped out, then yeah, I give up on this.

I honestly doubt that’s the case, though. It’s already arguably the worst super with no combo potential and no way to pandora into it.
We’ll know soon enough, hopefully.

Anyway, did anyone else watch any Mike Ross or Flash Metroid stuff on the streams? Mike Ross seemed to be a bit more focused on Marduk but damn, Flash Metroid did some nice stuff with Zangief. Interestingly, nearly every time he tagged in, he did :hp:->:d::hk: rather than a lariat or ex gh combo.
Still wondering what Zangief does better than Hugo though…

Isn’t Breathless a grab as well?

To me it looked like they’d already started jumping before the flash, and you just can’t grab them during jump startup, which is fair enough, but S-Kill seemed to indicate that it can be jumped out of post-flash. I’ll edit the first post once someone clarifies, since Seth has been known to sometimes just say things.

i was actually gonna mention that as well lol, it did kinda look like people jumped early, but then s killian said it could be jumped out of.

Let’s hope S-Kill’s wrong then. I don’t want even more reasons to play Hugo over Gief.

Well, it’d sure make my decisions on who to main easier, at least :P.

Seth Killian said it? It’s getting harder to doubt it. o_O
If you can jump out after the flash, what’s the point in it?

I can’t wait until either someone does a character overview or else gets into the lab with good ol’ gief.

This guy looks so good. His buttons are amazing, he has a ton of life, spd has great range, 360k is the best it’s ever been with great range and autoguard. I haven’t heard anyone who’s played him say that his super is jumpable on reaction, and I feel like that’s something my friends who’ve played would know to test and talk about. If it is jumpable, well, obviously that sucks.

But I’m planning to play him like a tank. My gems are either defense, meter, autoblock/autotech (depending on matchup) or meter, meter, autoblock/autotech (if I end up needing more meter than I expect with the auto gem). And you know what I do? I just walk and don’t even really do anything. If Gief has a life lead and auto gem, I’m just… not really sure what can be done to beat him. How are you gonna open up a character with tons of life, no threat of overhead or throw (again depending on matchup), non-directional reversal in lariat, a command grab with autoguard, and good normals?

I’m thinking about Guile/Zangief for this. You know, some other character who can build meter well, who can satisfy the conditions for meter building gems well (tell me you’re not gonna block 4 sonic booms for me to activate my meter building gem?), and who can play my annoying defense style. But we’ll have to see once the game comes out whether Guile is really the best for this.

As for Hugo, Hugo actually doesn’t have a grab super! So that’s no reason to play him over Gief.

Damn, we need more posts like this. That’s some hype-building right there.

Okay, so now I’m leaning towards ‘probably not jumpable’, despite S-Kill’s comments. I can’t even imagine why they’d make FAB jumpable, surely at that point they’d just make it comboable instead.

Well, it’s not a 720 motion and it can be charged up, so maybe they’d make it jumpable with that? I just think it’d be weird that no one else has talked about that, but it’s certainly possible that it’s jumpable. We’ll find out soon!

Maybe no one tried? Trying to jump post-flash isn’t what pops into my head when I see Final Atomic Buster. :stuck_out_tongue: But yeah, game comes out soon, and this is really easy to find out.

A Huge fan of grappler characters and I’m torn between Zangief or Hugo on my team…

Why not both?

wouldn’t that be a bad idea? Two Big Slow characters on the same team

Well, you’d ruin any short range rushdown character’s day. Probably not the best idea, though, but we won’t know unless someone tries!

besides it would also mean I’d eat fireballs every second from teams that had projectiles…

I think gief on point and hugo as second will actually be a great team. Giefs poke/footsie game is better than ever and Hugo’s follow up is as good as it gets.

Hugo is a grappler but definitely not like gief. Hugo’s spd range is short, watching it I want to compare it to non oiled Hakan with no power loss at all. The armor on his clothesline is gonna be a great tool to get in.

If you like both characters don’t shy away from that team at all.

PS. I just watched the archived cross assault flash metroid play and giefs ultra looks the same startup as SF4. I didn’t mean to freak out anyone by speculating that it was gonna be Honda u2 shit. I was just going by what killian said although we do know he has been wrong before lol.
